The Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo has been cancelled for 2020 due to safety fears amid the COVID-19 pandemic, organisers of the annual women’s tournament said on Tuesday.
Last week, the men’s ATP Tour and the women’s WTA were forced to cancel all of their remaining tournaments in China for this year in the wake of the country’s ban on international sporting events due to the pandemic.
“The executive committee, together with the WTA, has been exploring various measures to hold the tournament, such as holding matches
without spectators,” the organisers of the Premier level tournament said in a statement.
“But we have come to the tough conclusion that the cancellation of the tournament was the best decision in the interest of public health, espe-cially in light of the concern about the second wave of infection spreading in Japan.”
Japan has largely avoided the mass infections that have killed tens of thousands overseas, but a surge in cases during the past week in Tokyo and other major urban areas has experts worried the country faces a second wave.
The Pan Pacific Open is part of WTA's Asian swing and has been held every year since its 1984
start. It was originally scheduled to be held in September but was p o s t p o n e d t o November.
Following the can-cellation, the Korea Open in Seoul is the only event left in Asia on WTA's provisional calendar for 2020.
The professional tennis season is scheduled to restart after a five-month hiatus with WTA's Palermo Ladies Open in the Sicilian capital on Monday.
Organisers of the Tokyo event said they were yet to decide on the schedule and venue for the 2021 edition.
"This is a disap-pointing result not only for tennis players from each country who par-ticipate every year, but also for tennis fans in Japan and overseas," they said.
Former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka brought cheers to home fans when she won last year's event in Osaka, where she was born.

Marathon and race walk Olympic qualification can begin in SeptemberREUTERS – LONDON
Olympic qualification for the marathon and road race walk events can re-start from September 1, three months earlier than previously announced, the sport’s governing body World Athletics ruled yesterday.
However, qualifying for all other
track and field events at next year’s Tokyo Games would remain suspended until November 30, it said in a statement. Qualification was put on hold in early April due to the novel coro-navirus pandemic which has caused the Games to be postponed for one year until July/August next year.
World Athletics president Sebastian
Coe said the change was needed for road athletes due to a lack of qualifying opportunities.
“Most of the major marathons have already been cancelled or post-poned for the remainder of this year and the evolution of the pandemic makes it difficult to predict if those scheduled for the first half of next
year will be able to go ahead,” Coe said.“That situation, combined with the
fact that endurance athletes in the mar-athon and race walks can only produce a very limited number of high-quality performances a year, would really narrow their qualifying window without this adjustment.”
Organisers of the London Marathon,
due to take place on October 4, were prepared to help athletes from around the world travel to the event achieve an Olympic qualifying time, World Ath-letics said. It was also working with organisers of the Abu Dhabi marathon and hoped there would be at least two race-walking events between Sep-tember and November.

In a year full of challenges, the Arabian Racing Organisation (ARO) was delighted that Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) had confirmed that the Qatar International Stakes would go ahead as part of the Qatar Goodwood Festival 2020. The most valuable race of their calendar, the one-mile contest will be held on the rescheduled for Saturday and is the first in front of a crowd of invited racegoers.
The 12 entries received (subject to eligibility), however at the top of that list is H H Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani’s Ebraz, returning, like 2017 winner H H Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani’s Tayf, for a fourth consecutive year.

event forms the first stage of the Doha Triple Crown, the Qatar Arabian World Cup at ParisLongchamp on Arc weekend is the second stage and The Amir Sword, highlight of Qatar’s annual February Festival, concludes the chal-lenge. This year, on the back of his 2019 wins at Goodwood and ParisLongchamp, Ebraz won a record-breaking third Amir Sword, and in doing so claimed the Doha Triple Crown. His place in Arabian racing history is more than deserved.
