STUDENT COMPOSER BIOGRAPHIES

Calvin Wuthrich - “I'm an eighth grader from Hinesburg Commu-nity School in Hinesburg, Vermont. I play the tenor sax, trombone, and piano as my primary instruments. My compositions are mostly in the styles of my favorite types of music to listen to, jazz and alternative rock, but, like my listening tastes, also sometimes stray from these genres. In my free time, as well as composing music, I enjoy skiing and playing baseball.”Ethan Duncan is 13 and lives in Williston. He is a Freshman at CVU. Ethan has played piano for 7 years and wants to be in a band. He is a big fan of Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen. He is a red belt in Taekwondo and loves music (obviously).Zachery Roberstein is a Junior at North Country UHS. “I play the bass clarinet and contra-alto clarinet. I've participated in the Northeast Music Festival for the past 2 years and got 2nd chair this year, along with getting 4th chair for All State Festival in 2015 and being selected for All-New England Festival. I have done some music composition and transcribing for about 5 years, but I have only gotten serious about it in the past 3 years.”Alex Wick is twelve years old and lives in Burlington, VT. Alex is in seventh grade at Edmunds Middle School. When he was about three years old his dad taught him guitar and ukulele. When he was five years old he got a piano. When Alex was six years old he started taking piano lessons. Alex's other interests include sports, hip-hop music, cross country running, and biking. He plays soccer, baseball, and tennis. Six of Alex's compositions have been per- formed for previous Opus concerts beginning with Opus 24.

Jacob Dennison -”I'm a junior at Lake Region UHS in Orleans. and I play mallet percussion as well as piano in the jazz band and concert band. I am also in chorus. This is my second year writing compositions for the Opus competitions. My interest in music be-gan while I was young. I don't remember exactly when I started finding enjoyment in music, but I'd say I was around five. I had a little CASIO keyboard to play around with, and mostly didn't know what I was even doing. I just liked the sounds. However, later on, but while I was still relatively young, I started to play songs that I've heard. I only played the melody, however. My ear for music grew with me, and I started playing more complex songs. So, in that sense, I'm a self-taught musician. But I have been taking pi-ano lessons recently and practicing more often.

I compose electronic music at the age of 12 when I first heard dance music. Nowadays, my musical interests have shifted to-wards more experimental genres. I have a dream to have my own record label. Since last year, I feel like my skills in composing have greatly increased, and the pieces I'm writing are more so-phisticated.

“My name is Susie Francy and I am in 12th grade. As of right now, I sing (alto and tenor) in addition to playing soprano, alto, and bass clarinet; soprano, alto, and tenor sax; flute; piano; and ukulele. I am in the process of learning a few other instruments, including trombone. I arrange and compose many types of music, including classical, pop, and jazz. I love composing because it lets me express ideas and tell stories that cannot be expressed through words. Composing (and arranging, especially) allow my unique perspective of the world to be heard.”
