CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS1962: The intense thirteen day political standoff between the

Soviet Union and the United States. Russian missiles were placed in Cuba which threatened U.S. security.

DISCOVERING THE MISSILES The pilot of an American U-2 spy plane passing over Cuba on

October 14, 1962, photographed a missile being assembled for installation.

removed.

• But the Soviet ships stopped short of the blockade.
