Wednesday: You’re never too old to playYou’re never too old to play. Having fun and playing pretend isn’t just for the kids: it can be a great way to stay active and strengthen bonds with those we love. National Playday is a celebration of our right to play and have fun, embracing play wherever we go. Go on some everyday adventures with National Playday and ‘50 things to do before you’re 11¾’ – you can skim a stone (no. 5) or eat a picnic in the wild (no. 9).

Ideas for play: Kitchen disco

Here’s some inspiration provided by Culture Mile and Barbican Guildhall Creative Learning.

You can use everyday objects to make a big noise for Playday at 2pm.

1. Find some things in the kitchen (saucepans, spoons, metal bowls) which make a noise and start a simple beat.

2. Get others to add to it with another object until you have a nice rhythm going.

Top tip

You can use royal icing, caramel or chocolate to fix your gingerbread house together. Whichever you choose, be sure to prop up your walls carefully while you wait for your ‘glue’ to set (a can of baked beans works well).

Get creative with decoratingUse sweets and chocolates, or see what else you can use to give your house an exciting finish like almonds or rose petals. You could even use fresh herbs to give your house its very own miniature vegetable garden.

Make your own gingerbread houseWhether it’s for a stunning centrepiece or as a fun family project, everyone will love getting involved – even if it’s just the eating part. With our simple biscuit recipe, and your choice of design, you can’t go wrong with this classic tasty treat. Have a go at replicating a place we care for, from Gibson Mill to Mount Stewart.

• 1kg plain flour

• 500g butter

• 250g light brown sugar

• 200g golden syrup

• 4 eggs

• 3 tsp bicarbonate of soda

• 3 tsp ground ginger

• 1 tsp ground cinnamon

1 Add the flour, butter, sugar, spices and bicarbonate of soda into your mixer and mix until it resembles breadcrumbs.

2 Lightly beat the egg and syrup together, add to the dry mix and continue to mix until it forms a dough.

3 Roll the dough out between two boards to get an even thickness.

4 Plan out the shape of your house and draw all the pieces you need on to paper. Cut them out and use them as a template for cutting your gingerbread.

5 Cut your required shapes into the dough and repeat until you have used all the dough.

6 Place your dough shapes onto your trays and place in the fridge for 15 minutes before baking at 180°C for 12–15 minutes.
