‘Tree and Partners Stand Tall at Barretts (cont. from p1) Enjoying in the success was Dapple Bloodstock=sMike Akers, a longtime partner with Dunne who co-owned the Corinthian, Indian Charlie andTapit colts. Akers signed for theCorinthian colt for $130,000 at lastsummer=s FTKJUL sale. He purchasedthe Tapit colt for $60,000 at KEESEP,and the Indian Charlie colt for$105,000. For a combined $295,000 inyearling prices, the trio generated$1,010,000 as juveniles. Of course, thesuccess of these horses likely paid for afew who didn=t quite hit the mark, but itwas a remarkable night for the partners, nonetheless. AWe have a team that deserves a lot of credit,@ saidAkers. AAmy Dunne, Ciaran's wife, is a big part of it.She does a lot of the pre-work. She goes out and sortsthrough them before Ciaran and I ever look at them. Sothere are a lot of people in the pipeline who deservecredit. Ciaran and I are more visible than most of them, but there are a lot of people who help put the show on.We go through a lot of preliminaries to get here; itdidn't happen overnight.@ Akers said he wasn=t surprised by the attention thehorses garnered...or their resulting price tags. ANot atall--I thought that was fair market value,@ he said.AListen, the California market is not going to dry up andblow away. There are a lot of people out here that loveracing, they want to race, they want nice stock, andI'm not shocked some of these horses sold very well. But they weren't cheap horses to buy [as yearlings].We try to buy enough horse where, if we buck a shin ordon't make a sale, we're not scared to run oneoccasionally. So when we buy a horse, we're fullyprepared to put the tack on him. These horses alljumped through the hoops and ended up at this sale. They did things the right way--they breezed well, theyshowed well, and the top buyers loved them. Mr.Dunne and his staff are the ones to be congratulated.@ While Dunne and Akers have been in the trenchestogether for some time now, a new partner in the groupis Cory Wagner, who along with his wife Heidi operatesAffirmed Investment Corp. Wagner had an interest inthe Corinthian topper, as well as the Indian Charlie andSuccessful Appeal colts. Wagner signed for the latterfor $50,000 at KEESEP. Wagner is in his second year of yearling-to-juvenilepinhooking. He met Dunne a few years ago atKeeneland, and in 2009 purchased three yearlings. Hepaid $50,000 for Indian Winter (Indian Charlie), whosold to Jerry Hollendorfer for $125,000 at the 2010OBSMAR sale. Indian Winter was third to J P=s Gusto(Successful Appeal) in the GI Del Mar Futurity last yearand more recently won the San Pedro S. at Santa AnitaJan. 17.

Wagner also purchased Special Kid (Lemon Drop Kid)for $25,000 at KEESEP, and resold him to DennisO=Neill for $80,000 at OBSJUN. Special Kid broke his

maiden at Santa Anita Feb. 3 andwas beaten just 3/4 lengths as thefavorite in the Borderland Derby atSunland Feb. 26. Wagner kept andraced the third prospect. "Those horses did fairly well, sothis past Keeneland September, mywife and I took the plunge and spenta significant amount of moneybuying horses,@ Wagner explainedMonday evening at Barretts. AWepurchased 12, I think, in all. We don=town all 12 outright. We partneredwith Dapple Bloodstock and withCiaran on some. But we owned five

or six on our own." Based in Edmonton, Canada, Wagner co-founded theinternet site Investopedia.com, which in 2007 he soldto Forbes for an undisclosed amount. AI was lucky enough to make some money and investsome of it in the horses,@ he said. Asked how he got into racing, Wagner laughed. AMydad dragged me to the track when I was a kid, but mywife's family is really involved in breeding and racing inAlberta, Canada,@ he explained. ASo when I married mywife, I kind of married into it.@ Cont. p3

Wagner is also involved in the racing game. He has25-30 horses in training, roughly half of them withCalifornia-based trainer Mark Glatt. AOne of my first horses I actually claimed off of BobBaffert,@ said Wagner. AHis name was Chief's Magic[Chief Seattle]. We claimed him [for $62,500] andbrought him right up to Canada and he won two$50,000 stakes races. That was hook, line and sinkerfor me. He's still racing for us, actually.@ Wagner said he loves racing, but that pinhookingappeals to his business acumen. AFor me, if you canbuy a yearling and sell it as a two-year-old forX-percent gain, for me, that's the model,@ he said.AWhen you buy a horse and have the advantage oftraining the horse, knowing whether he can go long orshort, knowing if he=s sound or not, then setting a priceon him. If he sells, great, but I don=t mind keeping andracing if I have to.@

Good Night for Upstart Callaway... Callaway Thoroughbreds set sail on its maidenvoyage at Barretts March, and though it was a mixedbag for the consignment, Dan Northrup=s operationenjoyed a few nice scores. They included hip 99, a coltby Bluegrass Cat--Above the Line (Easy Goer) whowent to Highland Yard LLC for $115,000. The Utah-based Northrup had purchased the colt for just $8,000at the Fasig-Tipton October Yearling Sale.

Northrup owns eight inspection stations near SaltLake called Emissions Plus. He began as an owner of

Quarter Horses, and dabbled inThoroughbreds for a number of yearsbefore making a more seriousinvestment about four years ago in theyearling-to-juvenile pinhooking game.He and varied partners typicallypurchased between eight and 10yearlings a year, and offered themthrough consignments including BC3Thoroughbreds, Bruno de Berdt andRudy Delguidice=s Excel Bloodstock, and Andy Havens=s Havens Bloodstock. This year, he decided to strike out on

his own as Callaway. AI=m a big golfer,@ he explained, referring to the clubmanufacturer Callaway Golf. AI use Taylor Made clubs, too, but...@ Northrup=s past successes include Miss Heather Lee(Trippi), offered by Excel at Barretts March in 2009, butbought back for $60,000. Northrup put her into trainingwith Adam Kitchingman, and, after she broke hermaiden second time out in a $100,000 maiden claimerat Del Mar, sold her privately to a client of trainer BobBaffert. She quickly added a first-level allowance race, then ran second to Blind Luck (Pollard=s Vision) in the GIHollywood Starlet. Cont. p4

DWC MEETINGMeydan Racecourse

Mar. 26, 2011

Northrup said he prefers to sell, but will race ifnecessary. AThat=s actually what happened with MissHeather Lee,@ he said. AWe led her up to the ring and Iwas selling her to break even--it wasn=t like I reallywanted to race. But she was just too nice a horse [tosell cheaply]. Everything=s for sale. But if we have tokeep one and race, that=s fine.@ Northrup estimates his biggest sale to date is SolarRocket (Songandaprayer), a $50,000 yearling he resoldto Duck Riber Farm for $170,000 at Barretts March.Solar Rocket won his second career start at Santa Anitain January of 2009, then after missing some time, finished second in allowance races at Churchill inNovember and Santa Anita in January. Coming into Barretts, Callaway joined forces withRed Rock Training Stables, another Utah-based outfitthat breaks and trains his yearlings. AThis was my first year, so it was better for me topiggyback on the staff that they have, and it workedout well,@ Northrup said. A[Red Rock] is based down inSt. George, Utah, which is down in the southern part ofthe state near Nevada. It=s very warm, they rarely get afreeze there, and they have a very nice track.@ Asked about what he and his buying team typicallylook for in a pinhooking prospect, he said, AMost of thetime we just buy the horse, and if the pedigree's there, then we just pay a little more for it,@ he said. AWe justwant them to look good, walk good, and have a goodmind.@ Northrup=s goals in the business are prettystraigtforward. AI just want to sell nice horses, make alittle bit of money and have fun,@ he said. AI do it mostlyfor fun. If I make money, that=s a bonus. It=s enjoyable, and it keeps me looking for what=s around the nextcorner. It=s exciting.@ Callaway has two horses catalogued at Keeneland April, but will most likely offer its next draft at Barretts May.

If At First You Don’t Succeed... Juddmonte=s Twice Over (GB) (Observatory) was atroubled 10th in the World Cup last year, but hisconnections are confident he will turn in a better effortSaturday night. Freshened up after successfullydefending his title in the G1 Champion S. at Newmarketin October, the 6-year-old was a smooth winner overthis course and distance in the G2 Al MaktoumChallenge - Round 3 Mar. 3. AHe is grand and is in goodform,@ said regular rider Tom Queally. AHe just did aroutine piece of work [Tuesday] morning, andquickened down the straight. It is a case of so far, sogood, and he seems happy in himself, which is themain thing. He was a good winner last time out and hequickened up well. He seems to have tightened upsince then, and we just need a bit of luck now. He willhave a blow out this Friday, and that will get him to therace."

Sumii Hopeful of World Cup ‘Victoire’... Japanese trainer Katsuhiko Sumii sent out his tworunners, World Cup contender Victoire Pisa (Jpn) (NeoUniverse {Jpn}) and G1 Dubai Sheema Classic hopefulRulership (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) for a 1200-meter drill yesterday morning. Victoire Pisa is one ofthree Japanese challengers for Saturday=s main event, along with Buena Vista (Jpn) (Special Week {Jpn}) andTranscend (Jpn) (Wild Rush), and Sumii thinks he=slearned something from his former stable star Vodka(Jpn) (Tanino Gimlet {Jpn}), who came up short inthree Dubai appearances. Victoire Pisa, who defeatedBuena Vista in the G1 Arima Kinen Dec. 26, tuned upfor his big trip with a win in the G2 Nakayama KinenFeb. 27. AVodka had a preparation to step up for theDubai World Cup meetings, and I thought it would bebetter for two of my horses to have a preparation racebefore the big race,@ Sumii said. AVictoire Pisa may goto Hong Kong after Dubai this year, and also Rulershipand Buena Vista have the same owners [SundayRacing]--because of the travelling expenses, we decidedto ship to Dubai all together. Rulership and Victoire Pisahad good step-up races at home, which is good. All ofthe members from Japan feel that we must worktogether for the victory, and give all of the victims ofthe earthquake-triggered tsunami hope.@ Sumii added,ASince Victoire Pisa got to Dubai, he has had threesteady gallops at Meydan, so he has become moremuscular physically. Rulership always shows flexiblestrides and runs very lightly, and I think he took to theall-weather surface. They run in different races, so Idecided to have them gallop together.@

‘Pegasus’ Ready to Fly in Sheema Classic... Arturo Vargas and Diamond A Racing Corporation=sChamp Pegasus (Fusaichi Pegasus) will get anothercrack at his GI Breeders= Cup Turf conqueror DangerousMidge (Lion Heart) in Saturday=s G1 Dubai SheemaClassic. The bay will likely employ different tactics thisweekend, having attempted to make all the running atChurchill. AI thought if I take him back behind this pace, they are going to be walking, and he'll never have achance to give it a go, so we put him on the lead, andhe ran great,@ trainer Richard Mandella explained.A[Jockey Frankie] Dettori [on Dangerous Midge] rode agreat race that day. He'd pressure us a little bit, thenlet him alone. Then he'd pressure us, just so hewouldn't relax. Then he came the last time, and myhorse said, >That's enough.=@ Champ Pegasus opened2011 with a second to fellow Sheema challengerBourbon Bay (Sligo Bay {Ire}) in the GII San Marcos S.Jan. 18, but turned the tables on that rival in the GIISan Luis Obispo S. Feb. 19. AI think his race the otherday shows that he really does want to be taken holdof,@ Mandella added. Dettori will ride Godolphin=sRewilding (GB) (Tiger Hill {Ire})--a half-brother to lastyear=s Sheema Classic heroine Dar Re Mi (GB) (Singspiel{Ire})--in Saturday=s $5-million event, so Martin Dwyerwill take over on Dangerous Midge.

Ready to Jet... South African champion J J the Jet Plane (SAf) (JetMaster {SAf}) blew out down the Meydan stretchyesterday. AHe'll do the same on Thursday,@ said trainerMichael Houdalakis. Having captured the G1 HongKong Sprint in December, the 7-year-old was a bit rustywhen 11th in a local Tapeta handicap in February, butturned things around with a 1200-meter victory on theturf Mar. 10 AHe needed his first run here, and I'd havebeen disappointed if he hadn't won next time,@ histrainer added. AHe's very well, and my only concern isthe distance--maybe 1000 meters is a little on the shortside for him these days."

Two Looking to Give ‘Moore’ a Big Win... Trainer John Moore, so successful at his Sha Tinbase, is still looking for his first international Group 1victory, and will saddle Dim Sum (GB) (Kyllachy {GB})and Sunny King (Ire) (Desert Sun {GB}) in Saturday=sG1 Dubai Golden Shaheen in an attempt to correct thatoversight. Moore previously sent Viva Pataca (GB)(Marju {Ire}) out to a runner-up finish in the 2008 G1Dubai Sheema Classic, while his One World (Aus)

(Danehill Dancer {Ire}) was thirdin last year=s Golden Shaheen.AIt=s a monkey that I really needto get off my back,@ Mooreacknowledged. AI=ve had severalrunners run very well overseaswithout winning, and it=ssomething that I feel I am goingto achieve sooner or later. Iwould love if it was in Dubai thisweekend.@ Dim Sum, a 7-year-old, captured the Chairman=sSprint Prize in February for thesecond time, while Sunny King,

aged eight, has given top Hong Kong runner BeautyFlash (NZ) (Golan {Ire}) a run for his money in his lasttwo starts. AI can=t really explain how or why they havereached such a level of form at their age,@ Mooreoffered. ADim Sum seemed out of sorts last season, andthe only thing I did was to move him to a differentstable in the barn. He is now beside Viva Pataca, somaybe some of the champ=s old magic has rubbed offon him! As for Sunny King, he has always been veryconsistent, but has somehow upped his game recently. He should be well-suited to the Tapeta surface, becausehe won four times on the Polytrack at Lingfield, aleft-handed track like Meydan, including a listed raceover 1400 meters, before we bought him to race inHong Kong.@ Rider Darren Beadman, who sustained anankle injury in Hong Kong last Sunday, will be in hisusual spot aboard Dim Sum. ADarren was pretty badlybruised, but he will be okay for Saturday night,@ Mooreadded. AHe wants to win this race as badly as I do, andit=s nice to be going there with two decent each-waychances.@ Dim Sum himself is unscathed as well. ADimSum sustained a cut to his knee on the flight over fromHong Kong so he needed to do some easier work[Tuesday],@ Moore pointed out. AIt=s nothing serious, and has not needed suturing or anything like that, and Iexpect he will be out on the all-weather track[Wednesday]. They have both drawn well inlow-to-middle gates, and there should be plenty ofspeed in the race to suit them. I had One World runthird in this race last year, and I feel either of these twocould match that or, with some luck, even do better.@

Bob Back in Dubai With Euroears... Trainer Bob Baffert, who won a pair of Dubai WorldCups with Silver Charm (Silver Buck) and Captain Steve(Fly So Free), is back in the Emirate for the first timesince the latter=s win a decade ago. A lot has changedsince then, and the Hall of Fame conditioner was tryingto get his bearings in Meydan. AI was wandering aroundthe grandstand when I heard a security guard say,>Excuse me, sir. Can I see some identification?=@ Baffertrelated. AI said, >You=re looking at it. It=s my hair.=@ The affable trainer was impressed with the newfacility. AThis place is just awesome,@ he reflected. AYousee pictures of the grandstand, but you can=t actuallyappreciate it until you=re here. You could fit my wholehometown of Nogales, Arizona, inside that place--all thepeople of Nogales could live in there--it=s unbelievable.@Baffert went up to the grandstand=s fifth floor toobserve his G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen contenderEuroears (Langfuhr) breeze 600 meters in :35.26. "I justwanted to give him a little spin out there," said thesilver-haired conditioner, while pointing out his simplestrategy for Saturday night. AHe's one dimensional; hegoes to the lead and stays there.@ In his first start forBaffert, the muscular Euroears ran his rivals off theirfeet in the GII Palos Verdes S. at Santa Anita Jan. 22.AI was debating on whether to come or not, but Idecided I was going to go because this is a really nicehorse,@ Baffert said. Triple Threats

Derby Edge to the Fair Sex... Three fillies are set to take on the boys in the $2-million G2 UAE Derby Saturday night, including trainerMike de Kock=s Galileo (Ire) twosome of Mahbooba(Aus) and Reem (Aus), as well as Godolphin=s Khawlah(Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) from the Saeed bin Suroorshedrow. In her first start on Tapeta, Khawlah trumpedMahbooba in the G3 UAE Oaks Feb. 24. AWe were notsurprised, because she is tough and strong,@ said binSuroor. AI am really happy with her, and she has a goodchance--maybe the best chance.@ In addition to Reemand Mahbooba, de Kock will lead over Zanzamar (SAf)(Fort Wood), who was second to Splash Point (StreetCry {Ire}) last out in the G3 UAE 2000 Guineas Feb.10. AI maintain the fillies are better than the colts thisyear, and we have two of the best,@ de Kock affirmed.AMahbooba will appreciate a good gallop, but does haveto reverse form with Khawlah. "Reem has been asuperstar and is tough. She will run well, whileZanzamar is another who will be wanting a fast pace,as stamina is his game." Reem, like Mahbooba ahomebred of Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa AlMaktoum, trumped the boys last out in the Listed AlBastakiya S. Mar. 3 in her fourth Carnival start.

Revenge Served Up... I Want Revenge (Stephen Got Even), infamouslyscratched on the morning of 2009 GI Kentucky Derby, will be looking to get back in the headlines afterSaturday=s G2 Godolphin Mile. Together withstablemate--and G2 Al Quoz Sprint hopeful--Stradivinsky (Stravinsky), the 5-year-old is under thewatchful eye of conditioner Rick Dutrow Jr.=s assistantMichelle Nevin, as well as his brother and fellow trainerChip. In 2008, Dutrow fielded G1 Golden Shaheen heroBenny the Bull (Lucky Lionel) and G2 Godolphin Milevictor Diamond Stripes (Notebook). "My brother Rick'snot coming, because I took his ticket,@ Chip Dutrowquipped. AWhen he asked me, I said >I'm going thistime.= I missed my chance to come to Dubai a fewyears back, so I said, 'Man, now's the time, I'm gonnago check it out.= I wanted to go last time with Bennythe Bull and Diamond Stripes, but I couldn't get mypassport done in time, so I missed a party there.@ IWant Revenge made two starts as a 4-year-old,finishing third in both the GII Suburban H. and GIII PhilipIselin H. last summer. In his lone appearance since, thedark bay was part of a three-way photo when fourth inthe GI Donn H. Feb. 5. AHe needed the run,@ said Nevin.AHe's got no issues, and came out of it well.@

MACHO MAN IN LOUISIANA Mucho Macho Man (Macho Uno) heads into GII Louisiana Derby as the likely favorite, and is

expected to use the nine-furlong testas springboard for the May 7 GIKentucky Derby. The recipe forsuccess Saturday appears to be asimple one for trainer Kathy Ritvo.AHopefully he=ll get a good break andRajiv [Maragh] will find a good spot forhim,@ explained Ritvo. AHopefully, Rajivwill find himself in a good positionwhen he comes out of the gate and hecan make one run.@ The six-week gapbetween the two Derbies poses littleconcern for Ritvo, who confirmed thesophomore has been progressing verywell since his victory in the Feb. 19 GII

Risen Star S. at Fair Grounds. AI=m not sure exactlywhat we=re going to do with him, we will have to getcreative [with his training],@ said Ritvo. AHe=s a verynice, laid back horse, so he can handle it. He=s ready.@Cont. p8

AI thinkremoving the blinkers made a big difference,@ she said.AI think he got to relax a lot more.@ Explaining thedecision, Ritvo offered, AHe=s much more mature now,and I thought he could handle it.@ Mucho Macho Mangraduated at third asking in a Monmouth maiden Sept. 19 before finishing second behind To Honor andServe (Bernardini) in a pair of starts at the Big A,including the Nov. 27 GII Remsen S. Prior to his NewOrleans victory, the colt was fourth behind Dialed In(Mineshaft) in the GIII Holy Bull S. Jan. 30. Nov. 27. Sent West for his wintercampaign, Astrology didn=t quite enjoy the smoothestschedule back to the races. AWhen we sent him out toCalifornia, the original plan was to send him to the [GII]San Felipe S. [in February],@ explained trainer SteveAsmussen. ABut once he got [to California], he wasunder the weather, not really himself, which set usback a couple of weeks. Then, it was very rainy overthere, so we are later with him than we had originallyscheduled for bringing him back.@ Despite the setbacks,Asmussen thinks the colt has the quality to shineSunday. AHe=s a graded-stakes winning colt with atremendous pedigree,@ he said. AIt is an ambitious placeto start him back, but I feel very good about the healthand condition of the horse.@ Asked about returningagainst competitive company off the layoff, Asmussenadmitted, AIt is a tall order, bringing him back in an$800,000 stakes and going nine furlongs, but he ran ina pair of two-turn races last year, and handled themwell. Also the timing and the distance of the SunlandDerby fits well. Sunland is a very similar racetrack toSanta Anita, and without running in the San Felipe, theonly race left in Southern California was the [GI] SantaAnita Derby. I thought this was a better option forhim.@ In his latest morning work, the colt went sevenfurlongs in 1:25 1/5 Mar. 15. AI liked the work that heput in the morning and he is coming into this race verywell. I think a lot of our questions will be answeredSunday.@

While the team hashigh hopes for his future, Asmussen was in no hurry todecide the colt=s next start. AWe=re just going to followthe same formula that we used to get him ready for hisstart--that is just run him when he=s ready. I=m verypleased with how he came out of his race.@ As for whatlies ahead in the immediate future, Asmussen added,AHe will go back to the track this week, and ifeverything goes well, he will have his first breeze backMonday. As our names were mentioned in Friday's story onthe Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation in The NewYork Times, I felt it appropriate I comment. I was approached several years ago by the board ofdirectors of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, and I am happy and proud to have served on the boardsince that time. I am proud of the organization, andRichard and I will continue to support it wholeheartedly, just as we have always done. It is unfortunate that theneed to rescue and rehabilitate these magnificentanimals continues to exist, and equally unfortunate thatThe Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation is nowbeing criticized. I have watched the miracles they havewrought with not only horses we have owned andraced, but with others, and Richard and I have nointention of wavering in our support. I will continue to work with and support this unitedboard of directors to get through this difficult time andcontinue our important work. I thank all the wonderful, compassionate peopleworking so hard for the cause of animal rescue. Peggy Santulli

STREET CRY TOP ALL-WEATHER SIRE AGAIN When we last took an extensive look at sires ofall-weather (or synthetic) runners, in February 2010, wefound that Zenyatta=s sire, Street Cry, was the leadingsire by cumulative average-earnings index on all-weather surfaces. He still is. Using figures provided byThe Jockey Club Information Systems and compiled byBrianne Stanley and Gary Hadden, since the beginningof all-weather racing in North America with TurfwayPark=s fall meet in 2005 and including European AWracing since that date, Street Cry=s runners havecompiled a 3.75 all-weather cumulativeaverage-earnings index. He has the best figure among424 sires that have had 60 or more all-weather startersin Europe and North America since Sept. 1, 2005.Zenyatta=s $5.8 million in earnings on synthetic trackshave no doubt made a big contribution to that index. Santa Anita may have gotten rid of their synthetictrack (and the fatality rate at this meet will therefore bescrutinized carefully), but plenty of other places havenot. In coming weeks, >synthetic= tracks will be back inaction at Hollywood Park, Keeneland, Woodbine, andArlington Park. In the 5 1/2 years since synthetics cameto North America, there have been more than 87,000starters on all-weather tracks in North America andEurope (there may be a few duplications, in the casesof horses that started on AW tracks in both),representing 4,408 stallions (click here for analphabetical list of all sires with an AW runner sinceSeptember 1, 2005). Of these, 424 stallions have sired60 or more AW runners (click here for an alphabeticallist of these 424 sires). This year the total number ofAW runners will go over the 100,000 mark. Up until this year, California had even moreall-weather racing than Woodbine, but the population ofsires of racehorses is much more concentrated atWoodbine. Because of the rich incentive programs, amuch higher proportion of runners at Woodbine are byOntario-based sires than is the proportion of runners inCalifornia by California sires. They have more byKentucky sires, Florida sires, etc. This is why, when wesort the 424 sires with 60+ AW runners by cumulativeaverage-earnings index (click), nine of the top 25 siresare (or were) Ontario stallions, or (as in the case ofMilwaukee Brew), have had a significant proportion oftheir better runners in Ontario. Actually, he now standsin Ontario, too--probably because his runners have hadsuch good success there. Cont. p11

TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 3/23/11 • thoroughbreddailynews.com

For those of you racing or breeding in Ontario, thelegendary Bold Executive (3.20) ranks second only toStreet Cry by cumulative AW AEI. Where=s The Ring(2.59), the Pin Oak-bred by Seeking the Gold whocomes from the same hot F2006 sire crop as CandyRide (2.98, third by cumulative AW AEI), WhiskeyWisdom (2.55, now in Manitoba), and Milwaukee Brew(2.41) rank sixth, seventh, and eighth respectively. Alsofiguring among the top 25 are: Tethra (2.16);Compadre (2.12); Trajectory (2.01); Kinshasa (1.97);and Bold n= Flashy (1.96). Conclusion: whatever they=redoing in Ontario is working; you=d hope somebody ismaking money with these sires. Besides Candy Ride, the other F2006 sire with a highcumulative AW AEI is Tapit (2.35), though bothMedaglia d=Oro (1.43) and Speightstown (1.27) also dofine. Speightstown, in fact, has six AW stakes winners. Also among the top 10 by cumulative AW AEI are:D=wildcat (2.78); Chester House (2.60), Juddmonte=shalf-brother to Empire Maker who unfortunately diedbefore anybody had the slightest inkling how good hewas going to be; and Tiznow (2.35), whose first foalswere born in 2003 and raced in 2005, meaning he wasfrom the first crop of sires that had synthetics availableto their runners throughout their entire stud careers. It=sinteresting that all of the top 10 sires in this categorystood in North America (more good racing on syntheticsthere than in Europe), and all had over 40% winners toAW runners. The average for all NA runners is 34%winners to AW runners, and it=s 30% for all runners(Europe is 25%). Another meaningful statistic, we are finding, is asire=s number of AW stakes winners; percentage istraditionally regarded as more important, but we arelooking at statistics that are in their relative infancy(click here). There is a huge difference in the availabilityof black type for AW racing between North Americaand Europe. In North America, of course, entire majorcircuits are (or were) now run on synthetics, includingGrade I races, whereas, in Europe, I=m pretty sure ascattering of Group 3 races is the top of the scalethere. Since Sept. 1, 2005, there have been 862 AWstakes winners in North America, which is 1.78% ofrunners (one of every 56 runners). In Europe, therehave been 156 AW stakes winners, just four-tenths ofone percent of runners--one in 250 runners. Cont. p12

“The observation by TDN staffers in last Thursday’s paper (pp. 9-10)that we should look at the OBS sale as February and March combinedis spot on, and so we do in the top graph and table here: when doingso, the gross is up six percent from last year, the average up byalmost $1,000 (one percent) exactly. Of course, like everything thetwo-year-old market crashed between early 2008 and early 2009, thenthere was a further 20 percent shrinkage in numbers in 2010. Thecombined gross for the sales so far is down 44 percent from 2008,number catalogued down a quarter from 2009 (Barretts’ not included).”

TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 3/23/11 • thoroughbreddailynews.com

(Bill Oppenheim cont.) Giant=s Causeway has sired 14 AW stakes winners(all in North America; of the 11 sires in this categorywith nine or more AW stakes winners, Lemon Drop Kidis the only one with an AW stakes winner in Europe),and leads all sires in this category. They called him an>iron horse= on the racetrack, and he=s pretty much thatway at stud, too. But there is no doubt that hisproficiency at siring AW runners has been a big help tohim in achieving his two North American sirechampionships. Tiznow and A.P. Indy are tied forsecond, with 13 each; interestingly, the three leadershave almost exactly the same percentage of AW stakeswinners to runners in North America. Giant=s Causewayhas 14 from 186 North American AW runners (7.53%);Tiznow is 13 from 189 (6.88%); and A.P. Indy 13 from188 (6.91%). None had European AW stakes winners, but Giant=s Causeway had 122 AW runners in Europe, whereas Tiznow and A.P. Indy have had 11 and five, respectively. So Tiznow and A.P. Indy have higheroverall percentages of AW stakes winners to runnersthan does Giant=s Causeway. Tied with 11 AW stakes winners each are Canadiansire Bold Executive and Smart Strike; whether Curlinliked the >plastic,= as his owner Jess Jackson called it,or not, plenty by the two-time champion sire do. Tiedwith 10 are the aforementioned Street Cry, Lemon DropKid, and deceased Forest Wildcat. Three sires with nineeach are Sky Mesa, Indian Charlie and the Californiasire revelation Unusual Heat. I=d say that=s quite astrong performance by Sky Mesa, especially. He=s not ahorse who gets a lot of fanfare, but he=s made a reallystrong recovery from a slow start when he was afreshman sire in 2007, and 6.72% AW stakes winnersto starters is a very good percentage. We also compile percentage of AW winners fromstarters, though we find that is probably the leastsignificant of the three class indicators (click here). Still,it=s always good to know that a sire has a good recordon the AW, so you wouldn=t be afraid to try one on it.Marino Marini, for example, a son of Storm Cat whostands in California, leads the list with almost 57% AWwinners to starters.

Average for North America is 34% and, since theaverage for Europe is just 25%, you probably won=t besurprised to hear that 24 of the top 25 in this categorystand in North America. The one exception is Danetime, who, like Chester House, is dead and just about out ofrunners, so the information doesn=t do us much good. Second in this category is another son of Storm Cat,Yankee Gentleman (56.18% AW winners to runners),who was sent from Kentucky to Louisiana (nosynthetics there) last year, and third is a grandson ofStorm Cat, Cactus Ridge (53.85%), by Storm Cat=s sonHennessy. I think the message here is you needn=t fearrunning a Storm Cat-line horse on the synthetics.Ranking 11th in this category is another California sonof Storm Cat, Tribal Rule (48.18%), who also has a2.04 cumulative AW AEI, and over 6% AW stakeswinners to runners (seven of 110). Canada is again prominent in this category, with BoldExecutive (52.16%), Milwaukee Brew (48.91%), andWhere=s The Ring (48.35%) also among this top 10.Interestingly, fifth and sixth by percentage of AWwinners to runners are the 3/4-brothers Decarchy(50.59%, a California stallion) and Chester House(50%). Their other half-brother Empire Maker, who isafter all by Unbridled, was right at the average, with34.15% AW winners. He, too, has good AW statistics:2.17 cumulative AW AEI, and just under 4% AW stakeswinners to runners (five of 123). Also among the top10 by percentage of AW winners to runners is thecurrent third-crop sire, Kitten=s Joy (49.28%), a formergrass champion; and just outside the top 10 is CandyRide (48.04%), who figures very high in all categories, though, of course, many of his early good runners havebeen produced by the Craig family and have raced inCalifornia.

MARTINS MISSES GUINEAS J “TDN Rising Star” J

Peter Martins (Johannesburg) will not make the Apr. 30G1 2000 Guineas, according to his trainer, JeremyNoseda. Not seen since winning a seven-furlongconditions event at Newmarket by five lengths at theend of July, Earle Mack's promising colt will have towait to make his sophomore debut. "Unfortunately,Peter Martins has met with a setback," Noseda said onhis website. "This will rule him out of a planned tilt atthe 2000 Guineas." Noseda also revealed that MGSWStrike the Deal (Van Nistelrooy--Countess Gold, by Mt.Livermore) has been euthanized after developing colitis.Winner of the 2007 G2 Richmond S. and runner-up inthe G1 Middle Park S., the chestnut also captured theG3 Dubai Duty Free World Trophy S. in 2009, butsustained an injury while training in Dubai last winter.ASadly, he met with a fresh setback and developed avery bad case of colitis,@ Noseda stated. AAnd, despitea great effort from the Equine Hospital, we were unableto save him. He was a great horse to have around theyard, and was a rock-solid stakes performer, and will besadly missed.@
