Afsterwe van Abraham (Abe) Brink van die SAV Johan Brink van Personeel verwittig met leedwese “... dat Abe op 18/08/2016 in die ouderdom van 80 jaar in die Wittekruin Ouetehuis te Vredenburg oorlede is. Hy was ‘n kommunikasie-offisier in die SAV en hy en sy vrou, Diana, het hulle op Dwarskersbos gevestig waar hy hom met skryfwerk besig gehou het. Abraham se verassingsdiens het op 23/08/2016 plaasgevind. 2. Afsterwe van Ferdi Bergh van Logistiek * Ds Gawie Coetzee verwittig met leedwese “... dat Ferdi op 16/08/2016 oorlede is. Sy vrou, Marie, se kontaknommers is 082 829 6677 en 012-379 4318”. * Chris Deeves van Logistiek voeg by “… dat Ferdi lank by 81 TVD en later by die destydse SA Leër Log Kmdmt en by GS4 by SA Leër HK diens gedoen het. ‘n Verassingsdiens het op 19/08/2016 by die NG Gemeente Wonderboompoort plaasgevind”. 3. Passing of Grant Murray : Honorary Col of 15 Sqn at AFB Durban “It is with deep sadness that is advised of the passing of Grant (photo below) on 01/09/2016 on his final helicopter flight home. He loved the SAAF, but more than that, he was passionate about the people in this beautiful organization. Never did a visit pass without our Colonel checking up on the welfare of especially the junior personnel first. He was a rock in what has been quite a stormy sea, especially for the younger generation at the squadron. We will all miss his steady presence. Farewell and may you Rest in Peace!” 4. Afsterwe van Dirk van Schalkwyk van die SALM Johan Bauer van die SALM verwittig “…met groot hartseer van die afsterwe van Dirk (foto onder), ‘n voormalige Tegniese-offisier van die SALM. Die gedenkdiens het op 18/08/2016 by die NH Kerk in Lyttelton plaasgevind. Dirk se broer, Fanie, se selno is 082 561 6611”.
5. Afsterwe van Piet Röhrbeck van die Kavallerie * Voorheen het Gerhard Venter van die Kavallerie vertel dat hy vir by Piet op Ballito gaan kuier het. Hy het gesien dat Piet baie skraal is en weekliks vir dialise gaan aangesien die siekte sy niere bykans disfunksioneel gemaak het. * Eric van der Watt van die Kavallerie verwittig nou met leedwese “... dat Piet op 17/08/2016 oorlede is. Sy vrou, Celeste, se telno is 032- 946 3983” 6. Afsterwe van Dave(Voëltjie) Keller van die Seiners Paul Els noem dat Pieter Smit op FaceBook met leedwese bekend gemaak het dat Dave op 07/09/2016 weens kanker oorlede is. Paul voeg by “... dat Dave met aftrede in 2012 die RSM van Regt N Tvl was”. 7. Passing of Cdr Abie Brink SAN (Ret) Arne Soderlund advises with regret “ … that Abie had passed away in Vredenburg on 18/08/2016 and that the funeral service was held at Huis Wittekruin in Vredenburg on 23/08/2016. Our sincere condolences to his wife, Diana”. 8. Passing of Paul Van Dyk of the Infantry Kevin Bowden advised on the FaceBook page of the Op Savannah Veterans Association that Paul (photo below) had passed away in Australia on 12/09/2016. Kevin also undertook to attend the funeral on behalf of the Association.
9. Afsterwe van Jurie Feldtmann van die SALM Rina Roberts van die SALM verwittig met leedwese “... dat my swaer, wat vir baie jare by LMB Snake Valley werksaam was, op 09/09/2016 in 3 Mil Hosp oorlede is. Hy was 72 jaar
oud. ‘n Dankdiens is op 16/09/2016 by die NG Gemeente Magalieskruin gehou. Sy seun, Jurie, se selno is 079 406 1948”. 10. Afsterwe van Japie (Kloppies) Kloppers) van Spes Magte Callie Roos van Spes Magte verwittig met leedwese “... dat Kloppies op 17/08/2016 in 1 Mil Hosp oorlede is. Hy was die dag vantevore opgeneem, maar die infeksie in sy niere was hierdie keer net te veel. Die familie gaan deur ’n baie moeilke tyd en ons dink aan hulle. Spes Magte se familie het een van sy groot ikone verloor. Die begrafnisdiens is op 27/08/2016 by die NG Gemeente Waterkloofrif gehou. Kloppies se vrou, Kathy, se selno is 083 666 0619”. 11. Passing of Peter : Son of the Late RAdm Terry-Lloyd of the SAN Arne Soderlund also advises with regret “… of the passing of Peter recently after a long battle with cancer. Our sincerest condolences to his wife, Myfanwy, and his sister, Vivienne”. 12. Terugslag vir Arthur Schiebler van die Seiners. Deon van Zyl van die Seiners rapporteer dat Arthur die volgende op FaceBook gemeld het: “Nadat ons in Jun 2016 na Kaapstad vir die rugoperasie is, het ek en Martie nou weer na Windhoek teruggekeer. My rug is nou amper van staal van al die skroewe en penne om die rugwerwels aanmekaar te hou. Ek het beperkte gevoel in my bene en mag dalk nooit weer kan loop nie! Alles is nou in ons Hemelse Vader se hande en mens kan net hoop en vertrou dat dinge beter sal gaan en bid vir genesing! Baie dankie vir die ondersteuning en boodskappe vir beterskap”. 13. Knievervanging vir Sarel du Plessis van die Geskut en Personeel “Ek lees dat genl Constand Viljoen ‘n knievervangingsoperasie ondergaan het en dat dit goed afgeloop het. Ek het ook ‘n dubbele knievervanging gehad en kan nie glo dat dit so goed gegaan het nie, veral nie nadat ek vir elf maande in ‘n rystoel gesit het. Twee dae na die operasie kon ek reeds met krukke begin loop en is nou net gedeeltelik op my kierie. Kan nie glo dat ek soveel pyn in my knieë vir jare moes verduur en soveel anti-inflammatoriese pille sonder sukses moes drink nie. Nou is alles verby! Dank die goeie Vader daarvoor en my dank ook aan 2 Mil Hosp en dr Read wat die operasies uitgevoer het”. 14. Terugslag vir Dirk du Toit van die Oos-Caprivi Tinus (AK) de Jager rapporteer dat”... Oom Dirk by 2 Mil Hosp vir behandeling opgeneem is. Hy het baie pyn en dit gaan nie goed met hom nie”. PERSOONLIKE BOODSKAPPE 15. Farewell Function for Gen Kat Liebenberg in London One of the readers of Angel’s MN referred to the warship, HMS Belfast, which has been turned into a museum and recalls that the first private function held on the ship after she was moored in the Thames was a farewell function hosted by the then SA Armed Forces Attaché, R Adm MR Terry-Lloyd, for the SA Army Attaché, Cmdt Kat Liebenberg, after he had completed his term in London.

Ek en Cynthia het gegroei tot ‘n hele 19 mense in die familie met die oudste kleinseun 22 en die jongste 2!” MILITêRE AANGELEENTHEDE 18. Rooivalk Armed Helicopters of UN Mission in the DRC In the RFC Newsflash of Godfrey Giles it was reported that the SAAF’s Rooivalk deployment with the UN Force in the DRC is the blue eyed boy of the mission, due to its unrivalled effectiveness, according to Lt Col Danie Bellingan, OC of 16 Sqn. 19. New Parachute System for SANDF Airborne Forces In a RFC Newsflash it was also reported that the final training and acceptance of a new high altitude parachute system for the Airborne elements of the SA Army and SA Special Forces, is currently underway at the De Brug training area outside Bloemfontein. 20. Denel to Manage the SAN Dockyard at Simons Town In Angel’s Maritime News (MN) it is reported that Denel Integrated Systems and Maritime is set to take over the management of the Dockyard (photo below) after it was handed back to the Navy by Armscor, who will in future act as the procurement agency interfacing between the SAN and Denel. Among problems identified over the years of Armscor’s management were insufficient capacity, capabilities and funding. Manpower levels were said to be below the minimum needed for maintenance and support.

Rina se man wel vir jou pensioenvoordele kwalifiseer, mits hy as begunstigde by die Pensioenfonds geregistreer is. Jy moes egter met ‘n gratifikasie en annuïteit (lompsom en maandelikse pensioen) en nie met ’n skeidingspakket, afgetree het. As voorbeeld kry ek reeds geruime tyd, benewens my eie pensioen, ook my oorlede eggenote se pensioen. Die vorms kan van die GPF se webwerf by GEPF Forms afgelaai word. Dit kan egter nie elektronies ingedien word nie, maar wel by die GEPF se plaaslike kantoor. Hulle e-posadres is [email protected] en hulle is flink om antwoorde te verskaf nadat vorms ingedien is. Onthou gerus ook van die mediese voordele wat vir u man by die SM Mediese Voortsettingsfonds beskikbaar is”. 22. The World’s Largest and Heaviest Active Duty Warship Arne states in his Maritime News that Pyotr Velikiy (pictured below) the heavy missile cruiser of the Russian Navy, is technically the largest warship in the world besides aircraft carriers. Western defence commentators re-invented the term ‘battle cruiser’ to describe a ship of this size. With a length of 252m and a beam of 28.5m, it is similar in size to a Iowa Class battleship of the USN during WW2, but displaces almost half as much water. The Pyotr Velikiy is the flagship of the Russian Northern Fleet.

25. Fifty Years of Helicopter Excellence In Godfrey’s RFC Newsflash it was reported that on 27/08/2016 a re-union was held at the SAAF Museum to acknowledge those who were associated with this honoured air power capability for 50 years. Since the first arrival of the helicopter capability, the SAAF was world renowned for major breakthroughs in the utilisation of helicopter proficiency. Any soldier who witnessed the unstoppable rescue missions flown during the Mozambican floods and the sinking of the Oceanos, must feel proud that helicopters are operated so professionally and skilfully. 26. Denel Land Systems Launches New Machine Gun In Godfrey’s RFC Newsflash Denel Land Systems announced its new Denel Machine Gun (DGM) in two versions, an infantry section version, the DMG-5, and a heavy-barrelled version for mounted use on a vehicle. The DGM replaces the Denel SS-77 General Purpose Machine Gun.
27. Denel Unveils Africa Truck Denel has unveiled the prototype of its ‘Africa Truck’ (photo below) which is likely to emerge as its offering to replace the SANDF’s aging fleet of SAMIL military trucks.

Uitreik van Doodsertifikaat * Vroeër het Dirk van Rooyen van die ADK gevra wie versoek moet word om `n doodsertifikaat uit te reik. * Een van ons lesers het geantwoord en presies verduidelik wat gedoen moet word. Vir een of ander rede is die berig egter verloor en die leser moet dit asseblief weer aanstuur. 29. Bewaring van die RSA se Strategiese Mediese Voorraad. Louis Coetzee van die Lugafweer het onlangs weer vir Piet (Hildie) Pansegrouw van die SAGD raakgeloop en onthou toe van die volgende wat Olivier Henning van die SAGD hom vertel het: “Die SAGD was verantwoordelik vir die bewaring van die RSA se strategiese mediese voorraad by die Mediese Basisdepot (MBD). Piet was as H Med S Log onder andere verantwoordelik vir die bepaling en bewaring van voorraadvlakke van die Standaard Voorraadrekening, soos wat die stelsel genoem is. Ek en al die Rekenmeesters voor en na my, was verantwoordelik vir die boekhouding en opstel van finansiële state van die Standaard Voorraadrekening. Alle Staatsdepartemente, ingesluit die Departement van Gesondheid, het hulle mediese voorraad by MBD getrek.” TOEKOMSTIGE OORLOë 30. NTR. EIETYDSE MILITêRE GESKIEDENIS 31. Lest We Forget. Paul Els says that on 26/08/2016 Garth Anton Pienaar placed the following note on FaceBook: Fifty years ago today was the recognised start of the South African Border War, which lasted 23 years, six months, three weeks and two days. Please remember the 2 280 members of the SADF that gave their lives in service of their country during this period, of whom 776 were killed in action. We Will Remember Them. 32. Remembering Desmond Eldred (Dick) Peddle of the Artillery Dick’s son, David Peddle of the Infantry, provided this photo of his father taken at the railway station in Pretoria in 1939. David says that his father sported flying wings as a 2 Lt, as he was required to qualify as a pilot so as to be able as a Gunnery officer to do artillery spotting duties”.
33. Training Operational Medics for Op Savanna. Paul Els says that Mark Goller had placed the following on FaceBook: In 1975 the SADF launched Op Savannah and WO2 Rowley Medlin of SAMS was tasked to prepare a NS intake for medical operational duty. Rowley Medlin wrote that "... in about Jul 1975 I was told to take over the training of the Regimental Medical Orderlies at the SAMS College, but already at that stage we were starting to call them Ops Medics as they were going into the Operational Area. I was briefed that they had to be highly trained as Medical Orderlies and that they were to be deployed with the combat arms and had to familiar with the tactics of the infantry, artillery and armour. I had to devise my own training programme and was given a three-month training period. I divided it into six weeks of medical work and six weeks of field training. I started with the first batch in Jul 1975 and it went quite well. Just before the end of the three months I was given orders to dispatch them immediately to the border, which I did and immediately started with the training of another batch. At that stage the OC of SAMS College was Col Daantjie Brink”. 34. Optrede in Soweto. Kan iemand onthou wat sy naam is?” REMEMBERING WILLIE KOTZE OF THE GUNNERS 35. Roy Jackson : Honorary Colonel of the Light Horse Regt (LHR) “I am in the process of publishing a book about my service in the LHR during Ops Savannah and Budgie in 1976. Willie features quite prominently in the memoire and I was devastated to learn of his death, as I would have liked to chat to him before publishing the book later this year. I owe him a great debt of honour for what he did for my Regiment and for me in particular. The book pays attention to his management and command style. South Africa has lost a great soldier and a brilliant mind. It is doubly sad to hear that his brother, Pale, has also passed away, as he is also mentioned in my book. Willie gave me so many opportunities to use my military and management experience to the advantage of our great
country. If you read the book when it hits the internet, you will see just how much he did for the Hobby Horsemen, as we in the Light Horse Regt were called”. 36. Genl Joffel van der Westhuizen van die Geskut “Ek en Paul Lombard het vir Willie goed geken. Hy was as jong offisier en tot majoor by eenhede van die SAA(Vd) verbonde. Tydens Op Savannah was hy Proppies van Heerden se 2IB by Taakmag Zulu, waarna hy as Bev Veggp X-Ray op die Oosfront opgetree het. Met die afloop van Op Savannah is hy bevorder en as Bev 72 Mot Bde aangestel en was in die tagtiger jare Bev SA Mil Akad. Hy het in 1990 afgetree en hy en Marietjie het hul op George gaan vestig. Hy is in Mei 2002 aan leukemie oorlede. Willie was 'n bekwame en gerespekteerde offisier, baie intelligent en met 'n fyn sin vir humor. Hy het gemaklik en duidelik met mense verkeer en was altyd bereid om te help. Sy jonger broer, André (Pale), is ongelukkig nog voor hom oorlede”.
NEW MILITARY BOOKS 37. Books on Contemporary Military History by the Naval Heritage Trust Chris Bennett of the deep blue sea reports that the Naval Heritage Trust has just published Naval Digest 24. It is available for sale at a low price of R90 (170 pages A5) plus postage of R10 to an address in the RSA. One copy is for free if you join the Naval Heritage Society which at present has a membership fee of just R75 and offers many other books at a discount. Naval Digest Number 24 deals with Anglo-SA Naval Relations between 1936 and 1975. In this period the naval and political relationship between SA and the UK changed radically, making it probably the most critical and important period in the development of what was to become the SAN. It was a period that saw the growth of Naval ties that led to a bilateral agreement which was to survive for nearly forty years. The four carefully researched papers that make up this Digest cover some of the most important political factors that led to the Simon’s Town Agreement and transfer of the Simon’s Town Naval Base to the SAN in 1957”. 38. The Hobby Horsemen by Roy L. Jackson of the LHR Roy states “that the book covers the role of the LHR during Ops Savannah and Budgie in SWA/Angola during 1976. The theme of the book is very different to all the other books about the Bush War, as it deals with the dynamics of the interaction between the professional soldiers of the day and their part- time counterparts. It should give an insight into the synergy and the sometimes personal disparity between the two groups, often
resulting in unnecessary tensions. I am sure that the readers will recognise a number of the characters and in the process have a good few laughs, sometimes at the expense of the author. Composite Warfare : New Book by Eben Barlow This new book on the conduct of successful ground force operations in Africa presents African soldiers and scholars with a true African ‘Art of War’. It is intended as a guide and textbook for soldiers and scholars who wish to understand the development of hostilities, strategy, operational design, doctrine and tactics in Africa. It also illustrates the importance of non-partisanship and the mission and role of the armed forces. It covers the role of government along with operations related to war, operations other than war and how these operations can secure and strengthen a government. Composite Warfare draws on the author’s experiences and lessons in Africa where he served numerous governments as a politico-military strategist, advisor and formation commander. New Book on Op Savannah Mark Goller is a Veteran of Op Savannah and advises that he “… has started on a book about the operation. Our journey must be told so that the truth about that war can get out there, to counter all the propaganda and many lies. Given our understanding of the horrors of war, we were just humans who looked for the good in any situation, trying to deal with the bombing, sleeping in the rain and being attacked by the ants. The majority of us just followed orders, but some often acted with courage and bravery, which was decisive in some battles. How strong was our belief in what we were doing, being in a foreign Country wearing foreign uniforms? Would we do the same if given the choice today? Was the understanding of the military threat against South Africa understood as real or did it not matter, or was it more of an adventure for some. We fought while our families did not even know that we were involved in a war. We all seemed to have a sense of comradeship and friendship with our fellow comrades, but left to go home, never to see or hear from them again. PAUL ELS SE BOEKE 41. Jakkalsoperasies * Paul noem dat genl Geldenhuys die konsep van Jakkalsoperasies gevestig het en hy verlang ’n omskrywing daarvan vir sy boek oor Owambo en Sektor 10”. * Chris Serfontein van die Infanterie en die donker hande verduidelik dat “... genl Geldenhuys van mening was dat die junior bevelvoerders in al die Sektore te stereotiep was en dieselfde taktiek oor en oor herhaal het. Hulle het nie buite die ‘kassie’ gedink nie en het te voorspelbaar geraak, met die gevolg dat dit vir SWAPO (PLAN) moontlik geword het om kontak te vermy. Eie magte het in hierdie proses die verrassingsfaktor prysgegee. Hy het ons aangemoedig om met oorspronklike denke die terroriste uit te oorlê en ek het byvoorbeeld van dagoptrede na nagoperasies oorgeslaan. In die dag slaap en lê die troepe rond, maar in die nag dan werk ons die ‘cuca shops’. Dit het veral in die volmaan-tydperke uitstekend gewerk. Deon Ferreira en sy Lugmag-genoot, Mossie Basson, was die
bevelvoerder wat die meeste sukses behaal het. Paul kan gerus met Mossie en Eddy Viljoen van 32 Bn skakel. Die grondslag van Jakkalsoperasies is om slim te dink en die vyand uit te vang. Dit verg oorspronklike denke, maar nie die ignorering van basiese beginsels nie. Dit was makliker om ‘tricks’ met die inheemse eenhede (32 Bn, 101 Bn en die ander) te onderneem as met die NDPs. Laasgenoemde moes eers die gewone tegnieke ten volle baasraak voordat hulle vir sulke operasies gebruik kon word”. 42. Die Flossie. Paul Els wou weet waar hierdie term ontstaan het en Phillip Weyers van die SALM noem dat Trevor Ralston hom ingelig het dat Barry Gildenhuys van 28 Esk dit vroeër soos volg verduidelik het: “Daar is al baie bespiegel oor die herkoms van die naam ‘Flossie’, maar die waarskynlikste verklaring is dat die naam sy ontstaan te danke het aan die troepe op die grens wat die dae afgetel het na wanneer hul ‘aflos’ sou kom. Die woord is so dikwels gebruik dat ‘aflos’ later na ‘flos’ geklink het, wat geassosieer is met die vliegtuig wat jou aflos bring en die afgeloste lid huis toe neem. Later is enige vliegtuig wat dié rol vervul, deur die tipiese Afrikaanse taalproses die verkleining bygekry. Die selfstandige naamwoord ‘aflos’ het dus oor jare heen totaal van betekenis verander om ‘Flossie’ te word, en moet saamgelees word met ‘min dae”. 43. Naam van Vlug tussen die Oos-Caprivi en Rhodesië “As wat het die gereelde vlug tussen die Oos-Caprivi en Rhodesië bekend gestaan? Was dit iets soos die ‘Beer Run?” 44. Dit is interessant dat hierdie bekende vlieënier ook teenwoordig was”. WORKGROUP FOR THE PROTECTION OF OUR PENSION 46. Press Statement by the Chairman of the Government Employees Monitor Group. Hennie Roux of the Gunners provided the following statement by AP Stemmet, issued on 23/08/2016, which has been shortened : We as an organised group of Pensioners are concerned that some investments on behalf of our pension fund by the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) are made for political purposes and not for the benefit of the fund. We support the second investment aim of the Fund to invest a percentage of the available funds to enhance transformation and for the upliftment of those left behind in a past dispensation, but agrees with the Deputy Minister of Finance when he said on 12/04/2016 that such investments is necessary but should always be made for the benefit of the Fund. Statements by the Chief Investment Officer of the PIC, that the investment of hundreds of millions on behalf of the GEPF was made with a view to create a black Naspers, support our views that some of these investments are made for political purposes which can be to the detriment of the Fund. We also know that it is a trend worldwide at present not to invest in the printed media. It is also a matter of concern to us
that money belonging to the Fund was made available to bankrupt municipalities just prior to the municipal elections. Huge losses have been suffered through political motivated investments and we are worried that the Fund can be used as a ‘piggy bank’ by a government with serious financial problems. The SAA and the Government Employees Medical Fund are experiencing problems and universities need billions more, with the GEPF’s funds that can easily be misused. Our group do not threaten anybody but warn that we cannot allow the rape of our Pension Fund. We will monitor any action about our fund closely. 47. Letter to The Editor. The following is a shortened version of a letter that AP Stemmet had written to a newspaper: The Zuma family has decided to borrow the money from an obscure VBS Mutual Bank. It so happens that the biggest shareholder of this bank is the Public Investment Corporation, the enterprise responsible for the investments of the Government Employees Pension Fund. A government institution with such a lot of pensioners’ money readily available can surely help a friend in need. Some of our colleagues and critics of our group of pensioners cannot understand why we are worried about what is happening to our Pension Fund. Others argue that the Fund is strong and that we should not worry about the loss of a billion here and a billion there. We, however, remember what happened to the Transnet Pension Fund and with the help of the media, politicians, the public protector and pressure by pensioners, we will insist on transparency and will keep on asking questions. Please help us. Do not fight us. 48. Commemorative Service and Reunion of the Savannah Veterans’ Association * Tony Dippenaar of Cela is the Chairman of the Association and informed his fellow Savannah Veterans that his “… association with Savannah has been one long and
sustained highlight, culminating in the privilege of being appointed as Chairman. As an extraordinary group we did extraordinary things together and we are going to leave an extraordinary legacy”. * Tony adds that “… the Commemorative Service and Reunion on 11/09/2016 at the Voortrekker Monument and Amphitheatre Restaurant took us back to the spring of 1975 and Op Savannah, which resulted in a renewal of the SADF. The development of new armaments, development of mobile warfare concepts, dynamic leader training and many other improvements emanated from this renewal. We built the best Defence Force in Africa. The Reunion Luncheon and the AGM was an opportunity to renew old acquaintances. The sad fact is that the number of Savannah veterans dwindle each year. It is only through commitment and participation that we can celebrate Savannah Day on an annual basis. When the last few remaining Savannah Veterans reach the age of 90 years plus, possibly in the year 2047, then they will prepare to close down the Savannah Veterans Association. * The Commemoration Service on 11/09/2016 was attended by 90 members, and the subsequent luncheon by 52. 52. Final Effort to Locate Next-of-Kin of Members of the SAAF Killed in Kenia Gert Opperman, Chairman of the Ebo Trust, declares that “… this is a final effort to locate any surviving next-of-kin of the four members of the SAAF who perished in a flying accident against Mount Kenya on 23/07/1942. They were undergoing flying training when their aircraft, a Blenheim bomber, did not return from a cross-country navigational flying exercise. The wreck of the aircraft, and their mortal remains, were only discovered in 2002 and positively identified in 2003. Their remains could not be removed from the crash site as contact had first to be established with any next-of-kin to confirm their personal wishes. Despite all efforts, the search for such next-of-kin has, with one exception, been unsuccessful, but one next-of-kin of 2Lt Hendrik Jacobus Petrus (Bokkie) Lemmer has been located. It is intended to recover their mortal remains from Mount Kenya before the end of 2016 and to rebury them at a worthy ceremony in the close by Nanyuki War Cemetery, as an international convention does not allow the retrieval of the remains of WW2 war victims to their country of origin. Daaar is uniformstukke en ou uitrusting, te veel om op te noem en selfs handtekeninge van Hitler, Louis Botha en Smuts. Sy medaljeversameling het my die meeste beindruk. Daar is ook polisie-uniforms en ‘n polisievlag. Die ‘militere’ handgemaakte skaakstelle is ook werklik iets om te bewonder en te koop! Die plek behoort aan Leon van die PDK en Adri Visser. Hy benodig ‘n Kunenegespe en ek hoop iemand kan help. Leon dring daarop aan dat dit ‘n private versameling en nie ‘n museum is nie. Gaan kyk gerus want dit is ’n belewenis. In die hoofstraat is ‘n Militaria bordjie aan die linkerkant. Klop aan by die gasvrye mense want die koffie is heerlik en die botterbroodjies uit die boeke. Paul Els was still a young lad when this happened, but says he remembers it well: For the 1951/52 Springbok Tour of the UK, France Basil Kenyon was captain and Hennie Muller vice-captain. During the tour Kenyon suffered an eye problem and Muller was appointed as captain. One day the Boks were invited to lunch at the posh St James' Club in the West End. As they moved into the dining room Muller noticed a table resplendent with antique silver, cut glass and vases.
