Scenario- 28 10th grade English students at a local, public high school

- Routine vocabulary study of 10 SAT terms to be quizzed on each week

- students are given a cumulative test after 4 lists are given out

- 15 minutes of individual vocabulary practice 4x/week, using vocabulary worksheet, at beginning of each class session

Column 1. List word and part of speech

Column 2. Define each word

Column 3. Use each word in a complete sentence

Column 4. Illustrate the meaning of each word

- After first quarter observations and scores, teacher is concerned about student engagement and retention of vocabulary words

Observations- low engagement of students getting vocab. worksheet out at the beginning of class, without prompting

= 3-5 minutes to get started by 20-30% of students on a given day

- 15-25% of students need extra prompting to stay on task throughout 15 minute vocabulary work time

- low completion and turn in rate of vocab. worksheet

= 60% mean score and turn in rate on previous worksheets

- average assessment scores from vocab = 70%

ObjectivesThe objectives of this project are threefold:

1) to increase student engagement and interactivity in the learning process

= 90-100% of the time

2) to increase students’ retention of vocabulary terms and ability to use and recognize the terms in authentic experiences

= increase assessment average scores by 10%

3) to blend mobile learning and constructivist pedagogy into a traditional, formal learning environment

Learning Theories

Dual Coding Theory (Allan Paivio): Recall of newly learned material is enhanced when it is tied to verbal associations and visual imagery (verbal and non-verbal channels)

Social Constructivist Theory: Focuses on an individual's learning as a result of their interactions within a group

Schema Theory: Promotes idea of linking newly acquired information with prior knowledge to promote better long-term recall.
