(10 min) Research Techniques A graphic designer’s role in branding extends far beyond logo creation. And in today’s competitive visual environment, a brand needs to do more than just look good. So graphic designers need knowledge of competitors and to understand a brand’s values and market positioning, as well as how the brand could be expressed across various media. Clients expect designers to be able to explain their designs, and want to see evidence that the designer has done thorough research and has explored many possibilities. (30 min) Survey Tutorial: Students are asked to fill in a short survey to get an ideas of skills in software (15 mins) Presentations on info-graphics as a graphical visual representation of information, data and knowledge, presenting complex information, data or knowledge. The tools & techniques used to create them Discussion (1 hour) Introduction to assessment task 1 ‘Research & Concept Development’ Hand out brief 1 Questions and Answers (15 min) Students work on a timeline template handed out. (1 hour) (Lunch Break 1 hour) 180 minutes Exercise“Research and concept development” Research your past present and future via image collection, silent debate & focus groups, (45 mins) Ideate by looking at info graphics, systems and styles that make them. A discussion about design ideals and the future... where do you want to be etc (25) Lecture: The history of the grid and why we need them. Lecture:Infographics Metaphors and info graphics:Case study and what makes a sucessful infographic. Plus: The nitty gritty of assessment one; Preparing documents for print. Bleeds and printers instructions etc‘Discussion (40 min)

Tutorial: Setting up a 12 column grid in Illustrator. (30) Exercise: Using the grid with images. A step by step lesson with files provided, including graphs, pie charts and other info graphic images. (30 mins)

Lecture: Principles of Logo design: The logo is often the cornerstone of an organisation’s visual identity. It is often considered to be the “face” of a brand. It a symbol that comes to represent and embody all that we understand about a company, organisations, or thing. (40 mins)

Exercise: Using the pen tool (30 mins)
