Stage of works
Basement of the pavilion is completed, including wall framing, in-ternal walls and mechanical systems such water pipes. Workers are currently focusing on the spectator terrace such as putting in steel bars for reinforced concrete and laying timber partitions between spectator seats.
Materiality
Concrete is used for the material for the spectator stands and all primary structural walls due to its strength in compression.
Steel is used for beams and steel bars for reinforced concrete walls in order to improve the tensional strength of concrete. (Ching 12.08)
Yard lumber is used as structural lumber that has undergone visual inspection and mechanical inspection on the basis of strength and intended use. (Ching 12.13) Structural lumber in this site is present in several columns and beams.
Laminated timber is used as the exterior cladding. This material is a type of log that cut by quatersawing which has more even grain patterns and wears more evenly with less raised grain and warp-ing. (Ching 12.11)

Function
The usage of laminated timber as the exterior cladding is for aesthetic purposes. The use of both timber and steel in the post and beam frame was to make sure the frame is able to support the load of the roof and at the same time have a timber finish.
The external cladding are put together in pieces using a notch system. This is to enable easy assembly of the individual pieces. (Refer to sketch)

Architectural and structural elements
The roof feature of the pavilion takes a form of a look-out with large openings which would eventually be windows. This allows the penetration of sunlight into the function room and also acts as a ventilation shaft to allow sufficient air flow within the building.
Wood post-and-beam framing is dominant structural framework in the pavilion. Post-and-beam construction utilizes a framework of vertical posts and horizontal beams to carry both floor and roof loads (Ching 5.48). In this case, the horizontal beams are made of steel while the vertical posts are made of structural lumber due to aesthetic values. This post-and-beam framing is there-fore regarded as heavy timber construction as the floor and roof structures are supported by non-combustible wood members.
