Week 13, Lesson 1 & 2
Music Videos: Camera Angles, Cinematography
and EditingAll: will revise and identify a
range of shot types in a
video;
Most: will understand
different camera
movements and camera
angles and editing
techniques;
Some: will analyse the
effect created by the
different shots / movement /
angles used.
How many shot types can you
remember?
EXT: Why are they used?
Establishing shotWhy would this shot be
used?
A. To show intense
emotions/fine details
B. To show the
relationship between
characters
C. To show a character’s
body language and
their setting
D. To establish the
scene, move the story
on to a new setting
E. To show facial
expressions, but no
background

Task 1: Revise your knowledge of shot types and fill in the grid or make notes
where needed (answers are at the very end – don’t peek!)
Names of shots:
1) Establishing shot
2) Two shot
3) Over the shoulder
shot
4) Close up
5) Extreme close up
6) Medium close up
7) Long shot (wide
shot)
Reasons for using shots:
i. To show the relationship between characters
ii. To show a character’s body language and their
setting
iii. To show a character’s perspective/align us with them
iv. To show a character’s facial details but still present
us with their upper body to show body language
v. To show intense emotions/fine details
vi. To establish the scene, move the story on to a new
setting
vii. To show facial expressions, but no background

Storyboards
Once a concept or idea for a video has been decided, the
next step is to create a storyboard. A storyboard visually
tells the story of the video, like a comic strip. It may be
drawn, or it may use photographs.
A storyboard should answer some of the following:
• What characters are in the shot and how are they
moving?
• How much time has passed between the last frame and
the current one?
• What shot type is being used?
Let’s see an example…

What type of shot is this?
What is the effect?

shots from the
storyboard and
explain why you
think they have
been used by the
director.

videos;

Mini-plenary:
Name one shot type you saw or would expect to find
in a video by a boyband like One Direction.
Why are shot types important for them?
What image is created of the band by the shot types
chosen?

How do they use shot types in a different way?
What image is created of the band by the shot types
chosen in this case?
Task 2: Revise your knowledge of camera movements and editing) and fill in
the grid or make notes where needed. Use the next slides to help you.
Camera Angles
Revision
Camera is level with
the object. The most
common used angle.
Camera is above the
subject making it look
smaller/insignificant/
Vulnerable.
Camera placed
below the subject
making it look
bigger/powerful/
imposing.
Camera Movement
Revision Tilt: the camera moves up or
down for example from a
person’s feet tilting up to their
face.
Pan: here the camera moves
from side to side just like when you shake
your head.
The camera can also move
backwards and forward on
tracks as if being pushed through
the scene.
Tracking Shot:
Dolly / crane shot: the camera moves about
freely on either wheels or a frame.
Stationary: when the camera does not move.
Sometimes the camera moves closer or
further away from the subject without
physically moving. This is called a Zoom.
Editing
Revision
Editing (transitions):
Cut: The most used edit as it creates a
seamless change between shots. Quick cuts
are used to show fast paced action.
Dissolve: a gradual change
from one scene to another. It is usually used to show a short passage of time.
Fade: here the scene either fades up from black/white or fades to black/white.
It is usually only used at the beginning or end of a scene.
Wipe: The change between scenes is created by a movement of a (usually)
black line either diagonally, up, down or split. It is an obvious, cinematic effect.
Test yourself!

For the next few tasks, you may wish to fill in the analysis grids.
How many different shot types can you spot in the video?
How many different types of camera movement can you see?
What sort of editing is used?

Some: will analyse the effect created by the different shots /

How confident are you at spotting and analysing the
different aspects of cinematography taught so far?
Are you confident you can use
different examples of shot types /
angles / movement / editing on your
storyboard?
I still can’t name all the
different shot types.
Choose a song by your artiste/band and watch one
of their videos. Screen shot as many different shot
types and label them on a PowerPoint or Word
document (or just write about them on paper if you
are unable to).
I am still unsure of all
the different camera
movements and
editing techniques
Choose a song by your artiste/band and watch one
of their videos. Note down the times of where
clever camera movement or editing has taken
place. On a Word document or paper, explain
what you have seen happen using the correct
terms.
I am happy naming the
techniques and I want
to spend more time
considering the effects
of them.
Choose a song by your artiste/band and watch one
of their videos. Complete both the red and amber
tasks but only choose examples you think are
significant to the narrative. Explain via PowerPoint,
Word doc or on paper why you think they are
significant to adding meaning to the video.

If one of the songs from earlier in the
lesson was to be covered by a different
artiste of your choice how would the
video look?
Think:
• Storyline
• Mise-en-scene (setting / costumes
/ make-up / lighting /
performance)
• Cinematography
