Description Rust busters removes rust and paints rod iron fences and gates. The brochure is a standard trifold brochure with a die cut of paint dripping that repeats a design from the logo.

Applications Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop

Objectives Design a two-sided, folded document. Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images, not including the logo. Text-wrap clipped image in InDesign Write at least 250 words of original copy.

Process I sketched out the original logo design and created the artwork from scratch in Illustrator. I sketched out ideas for the brochure and designed the layout in InDesign. I contrasted the element through color, font style, font size and photos. I unified the layout by using a consistent color palette and paragraph style sheets. I received feedback that showed the logo to be weak. I went back to the logo and simplified it until it had a stronger design. I reworked the brochure layout to be consistent with the new logo and sought feedback again from others. Finally I worked to simplify the message and the elements used in the design.

Description Design a logo for a new service called “Wheelin’ Eats” that send a weekly email with the schedule and location of food trucks and farmers markets in the Las Vegas valley area.

Applications Adobe Illustrator

Objectives Create three logos to fit a company that will appeal to the audience. Research and receive feedback from at least ten people about which logo appeals most to them. Refine one logo with variations for color

Process I formulated ideas by creating a number of sketches. During this brainstorm process I had a lot of fun coming up with ideas like a hamburger in the shape of a popsicle, a jumping monster truck made out of hamburgers, and a bunch of other crazy things. I organized the most promising ideas and created the elements by varying size, color, alignment and proximity. To make the final design more readable at small sizes, I reshaped the letters “E” and “s” on the word “Eats” and adjusted the position and size of the oval behind the “W”. I worked through a number of color combinations and settled on a red monochromatic color scheme.

Description To display my html and css skills, I created a web page that features a recent logo I designed.

Applications Coda Panic (HTML + CSS) and Adobe Illustrator

Objectives Write content to describe the process of creating a logo and how it appeals to a target audience. Use HTML and CSS to redesign a web page based on existing markup and style. Use standards based markup and common CSS techniques such as hex colors.

Process I began by using the required css file. Then I created sketches based on the provided markup and style. I organized how the page was laid out. I wrote and edited the content. I adjusted the contrast with a color scheme based on the logo. I also worked to contrast the text sizes and colors and position.

Description Design a photo montage featuring a quote from Elder David A. Bednar. Layer effects and layer masks were use to blend the images together in Adobe Photoshop.

Applications Adobe Photoshop

Objectives Design a photo montage with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message. Blend two or more images together gradually, using masks. Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements. Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image.

Process The image of the forest came with nice contrast and I worked to use these contrasting blue and white colors in the project. Layer effects and layer masks were used to unify the three photos. Repetition can be found in the water drops that cover the image as well as the repeating colors in the forest photo, water drops and text. For the layers masks I used a large feather brush with varying amounts of transparency.

Description This Business Card was design for a political candidate “Dave.”

Applications Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign

Objectives Create a new logo and design a layout for a business card.

Process For this project I sketched out some ideas. I designed the logo in Adobe Illustrator CC. I worked through a number of fonts until I settled on Avenir Next. I organized the elements and used color, size and alignment to contrast items. I used a combination of “create outlines” and the pen tool to create the checkmark “v.” The checkmark unified the design.

Description This 8.5 x 11 flier was designed to attract graduates and invite them to attend a leadership conference.

Applications Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop

Objectives Apply design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to creative basic flier layout.

Process I formulated my plan with a pencil sketched four layouts. As I roughed each of the four layouts in Adobe InDesign CC, this layout emerged as the strongest. The organization of the design take cues from the slanted angle of the “V” in the logo and leads the viewer through to a call-to-action to register on the website. The composition of the photo provided focus and fit well into this layout. The background on the top of the photo and the bottom right were extended in Adobe Photoshop CC. The notebook was cutout on it’s own layer in the PSD file. InDesign’s Object Layer Options allowed me to turn off the other layers without adding additional files. It also allowed me to keep the container shape element in InDesign and allows for live changes to the shape angle.

Description This project demonstrates my skills with Adobe Photoshop.

Applications Adobe Photoshop

Objectives Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it. Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.) Also use Camera Raw to color correct iamgery. Size and crop the image, and place on an 8.5×11 page layout. Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.

Process My process started early in the week, walking around the neighborhood and scouting for photo opportunities. After taking photographs, I took to pencil sketches to mature layout ideas. I edited the original image with Camera Raw. Since the photo was a little underexposed, this helped to correct the exposure, pull detail back into the shadows and increase the vibrancy of the colors to better match what I was seeing at sunrise when taking the photo. I used Photoshop’s smart objects and layer masks to outline the image and provide a nice fade from the bottom.

Description Design an ad for a family reunion event. Scan an image and layout only in Microsoft Word.

Applications Image Capture, Microsoft Word

Objectives Demonstrate skill and knowledge of image sizing. Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design. Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience. Use only Word design features.

Process I scanned a family photo from my wife’s family history archives. I formulated layout ideas with rough sketches. I used an image of a great-grandparent. I used Microsoft Word to organize the elements of the layout. I worked through contrasting typefaces and colors to create unity between the main headline and a soft teaser headline. I simplified the message by removing unnecessary items. Have I mentioned how much I loathe Microsoft Word for layout?
