Sketch Model

Sketch model was made out of strips of rigid cardboard and copper wire.As is shown, a person must hold the cardboard arms in place when the section is in its open state (Figure 2); in this case, the hands represent the plastic stoppers on the umbrella which stop the arms from rotating too far and hold them in the open state.Another observation is that the cardboard, when in the open state became bent in shape (Figure 2), as would the metal arm in the umbrella, hence giving a rounded dome-like appearance to the nylon canopy.

Virtual Environments - Sem2

Initial idea was a rain jacket with an extendable cap section, using the mechanism of a compact umbrella (different from the original model used).

As an addition to that, a backpack rain cover was designed using roughly the same mechanism as the cap from the rain jacket. This bag cover would strap onto the user’s back as a backpack would, acting as half an umbrella.

The backpack cover idea quickly took hold, and another, altered design for the cover was designed.

In this version, the mechanism for the cover is very similar to the original umbrella model used (refer to drawing).
