Anatomy- Barnes Packet #3
This week 4/20/20- 4/24/20
Monday- Watch lecture on Respiratory System. Guided Notes found in Week 3
Packet.
Tuesday- Watch video lesson on C.P.R. and History of Heimlich Maneuver. There will be questions on the quiz about these topics. (**I have included a CPR Info PPT --- You do not have to print this.) Complete the “Respiratory System Packet”
Worksheet/Labeling found in the packet.
Wednesday- Complete “What is Breathing” reading passage and questions.
Thursday- Complete the Respiratory System Review sheet.
Friday- Complete Quiz over Week 3 information. Link on my teacher’s website. Due
Monday April 27th by 6 PM.
**There are printed packets located for pickup at the school Monday-Friday from 8am till noon. The Quiz for Week 3 is linked on my website.
Name: ____________________________ Date: ___________________ Block: _________
Respiratory System Guided Notes
Overv iew -‐ Major Function: ____________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________ o Can’t do this without the help of the: _____________________________
-‐ Key Structures: Nose, Pharynx, Larynx, Trachea, Lungs, Diaphragm
Funct iona l Zones -‐ ____________________________- warms, humidifies, and filters air as it travels to
the respiratory zone o Air enters the nose through ______________ and is warmed as it passes through
the nasal cavity o Air moves through the _____________, which connects the nasal cavity and mouth
to the larynx (____________) and esophagus § Air travels down the larynx to the trachea (____________)—Begin Lower
Respiratory Tract § The ____________ is a piece of cartilage that blocks the larynx when we
swallow food -‐ Lower Respiratory- Air travels down the trachea which splits into right and left primary bronchi
that enter the lungs § Right lung has ____ lobes § Left lung has _____ lobes § Lungs are surrounded by pleurae= serous membranes that line the thoracic
wall and diaphragm o The primary bronchi subdivide into secondary bronchi o The secondary bronchi further segment into tertiary bronchi
§ The smallest passageways (less than 1mm)= ___________________ -‐ _________________________- where gas exchange occurs in the bronchioles,
alveolar ducts and alveoli o Bronchioles empty into the alveolar ducts, which dead end in tiny alveolar sacs that
contain alveoli (thin- walled air sacs)
Gas Exchange -‐ Gas Exchange= ___________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________ o Arteries and veins feed into each alveolar sac, with capillaries connecting to each
alveoli o CO2 moves ________ of the blood and ________ the alveoli o O2 moves ________ the blood and ________ of the alveoli
Breath ing -‐ Diaphragm= __________________________________________________
o Separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity
-‐ Volume changes in lungs à pressure changes, which causes air to move o When we ___________ the diaphragm _____________ à room for lungs to
expand o When we ____________ the diaphragm’s contraction is released and the lungs
return to their deflated size -‐ 2 Phases
o 1. __________________= when air moves into the lungs § Inspiratory muscles contract and the diaphragm __________ à increased
volume in thoracic cavity § Lungs expand à _____________________
o 2. __________________= when air exits out of the lungs § Inspiratory muscles relax and the diaphragm __________ à decreased
volume in thoracic cavity § Lungs recoil à _______________________
Breath ing o The intercostal muscles contract à pulling the ribs up, and the diaphragm contracts
and moves down à pulling air into the body through the mouth or nostrils o Air passes through the ______________ or oral pharynx to the trachea o The trachea filters air using tiny hair-like __________ and ___________ o Air moves down the trachea and into the _________ and ________ bronchi
§ Trachea is very stiff so it stays open and doesn’t collapse every time pressure drops when you exhale
o Air arrives at the alveoli where ___________________ will occur o ___________ that has been pulled into the alveoli diffuse through the really thin-
alveoli membrane and into the pulmonary capillaries to be circulated through the heart and to the rest of the body for cellular respiration
Breath ing
o ___________that has been created by the body through cellular respiration is brought by the capillaries to the alveoli and diffuse into them
o The diaphragm relaxes, moving up and causing air (containing CO2) in the alveoli to be exhaled
Ce l lu lar Resp i ra t ion= _________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________
C6H12O6 + 6O2 à 6CO2 + 6 H2O + energy (ATP) -‐ This metabolic process is possible because of diffusion and bulk flow, accomplished by the
respiratory and CV systems o ______________= movement of gases, occurring at short distances o __________________= movement of large amounts of gases to different
structures that they then diffuse into
