"The Ideal Preparation" in action this week!
At Headmaster’s Assembly last Friday, Mrs Gillian Simpson, Executive Principal of St Margaret’s College presented the school with a framed copy of a painting of the Specialist Block done when it was first built as the original St Margaret’s College in 1914. A duet by Jono Stewart and Emily Stewart and a ‘thank you’ song from the combined Boys’ and Girls’ Chapel Choirs made for a memorable occasion.
A reminder that school is closed for Show Weekend on Thursday and Friday of this week (14th and 15th November).

From the School Board Appointment of Architect
The Board is delighted to announce that after a comprehensive selection process they have engaged the services of Tezuka Architecture for the purpose of develop-ing a master plan and design for the school rebuild.
Takaharu and Yui Tezuka are world renowned designers of educational spaces, with their Fuji Kindergarten being the recipient of the OECD’s ‘Exemplary Educational Facility’ award. Fuji Kindergarten is hailed by many as the standard that others aspire to and is often referred to by other architects as an example of what can be done in building an educational facility.
We are extremely lucky to have pulled off what can only be described as a ‘coup’ in securing their services, in associa-tion with Andrew Barrie Laboratories in Auckland, to design our new school.
The Board believes that it is important that all members of the school community have an opportunity to have input into our new plan. A school community meeting will be held on Tuesday 10 December at 7pm in the School Hall. At this meeting, members of the school community will have the opportunity to hear from Taka Tezuka and take part in a ‘share an idea’ session of what they want as part of our Rebuild.

Appreciation
The Board would like to acknowledge publicly the hard work and commitment of Craig Armitage who resigned from the Board at the end of last term. Craig has been a member of the Board since 2008 and has shown outstanding dedication to the School over that time.
Craig's influence was particularly noteworthy during his time as Chair of the Board, a difficult time for the School which was marked by the Septem-ber 2010 and February 2011 earthquakes and the resulting disruption. We are grateful to Craig for the continuity he provided by staying on the Board following his decision to step down as Chairman in July 2011.
On behalf of both the Board and the School I would like to recognise and thank Craig for the many hours that he has devoted to the School despite his many other commitments.

Reflections and Aspirations Forms
Tomorrow your child will be bring home his/her Reflections and Aspirations Forms.
Your child will have completed his/her section about the year that has passed and their aspirations for next year. We are also interested in your feedback about your child’s learning and activities in 2013. This information will be
used by your child’s current teachers to review this year’s programmes and by your child’s teachers to prepare next year’s programmes.
Forms are due back from parents on Friday 22 November.

BOSS Fair & Mufti-Day - Tomorrow
Our charities’ fair run by our Year 8’s is on Wednesday.
The Prep Schools will attend from 1.00 – 2.30pm but before that there will be a lunchtime sausage sizzle, ($2.00 for one sausage; $3.00 for two).
A gold coin donation is the price for wearing mufti on the theme of ‘Famous People’.
In addition, pupils should bring only modest amounts of pocket money to spend at the fair. The activities are priced from 20-cent - $2.00 and food stalls from $1.00-$3.00.
The Friends’ Association Discos (also tomorrow) are in the hall at the following times:
3.30 – 4.30pm Y1-3
5.00 – 6.30pm Y4-6
7.00 – 9.00pm Y7-8
The discos are run and supervised by members of the Friends’ Association. Please be prompt in collecting your child at the appropriate finishing time.

Photos are on the Tuesday after Show Weekend for the following groups and teams: cricket, ten-nis, athletics, touch, chess, sacristans, librarians, Cathedral servers, school leaders, Pre-School and Y1.
English Speaking Competitions
Pupils have given their titles for the competitions, the finals of which are Tuesday 3 December for Y7&8 and Thursday 5 December for Y4-6. All pupils will be doing the majority of their writing in school time, and in the case of Y7&8 it is intended that all writing will be done in class. However, your support in discussing the topics, assisting with research and hearing the speech is appreciat-ed. Do resist the urge to write your child’s speech, though, as it is obvious when this has happened. Please contact your child’s class or English teacher if you need advice or you feel your child needs further guidance.
Outdoor Ed Clothing
Weeks VI & VII are packed with Outdoor Education events which will be great fun and several of which require various changes of clothes. Please ensure that all items are named somehow. Every year, we inherit a new, unnamed wetsuit, a robust, rubber-soled sandal, and numerous thermals are donated to charity!

We have seen many instances of “Enterprising Spirits” in action during our swimming lessons. Although everyone is very tired the effort has been very worthwhile as all children have gained confidence. A very big thank you to the parents and grandparents who have assisted us. We could not engage in these opportunities for the children without your help.
The children have enjoyed some different experiences with Art and Craft materials over the last few weeks. As another part of our Art and Craft inquiry we are going to go on an Art walk with Mrs Gray, one of our Prep. School Art teachers, on Friday November 22nd. We are hoping for fine weather.
Sadly, at the end of the year we will be saying goodbye to Ms Mitchell. Lisa has decided to continue her journey of study. We will miss her input into our Pre-School. Lisa will have given six years of valuable service to us by the end of the year and we wish her every success in the future. We will formally farewell Lisa at our assembly on December 12.
Because of swimming we are not asking the children to get dressed up for the mufti day on Wednesday, but we will ensure that they receive a sausage if they have ordered one.
A reminder that our class photo will be taken on Tuesday November 20.
And another reminder that there will be no French next week as Ms Melhopt is away.
Our Class Friends organised a very successful Christmas party for the children on Saturday. It seems to have been enjoyed by all who participated. Our thanks to them for all they have organised this year.

Swimming was a great success again. Thank you very much for your support and help. If you would like to follow up the lessons, I have put some leaflets from King’s Swim School in our front hallway. After the energy required for swimming, we having a calm, short week before we get into the excitement of Pet Studies. A letter will come home on Wednesday giving you all the details.
Wednesday is the Boss celebration for the end of exams and, for the Year 8 children, the end of their time at our school. They have invited the Juniors to celebrate with them with a sausage siz-zle, a mufti day, and later, a disco! The theme for mufti day is “Famous People” either real or fic-tional. A donation will be collected for Boss charities. Only the J3s are invited to the Fun Day activi-ties at lunchtime. We suggest that their spending money is limited to $2.
Please remember that there will be no sports practices or clubs on Wednesday.
We hope you have an enjoyable long weekend.

Congratulations to our newest Canterbury Junior Cricket Association reps: William Duston (8EB), Fawzan Sugarwala (8GB); Toby Beale (7MB), Gus Coates (7SB); Ben Abbot, Tom Flavell, Jake Grove, Harrison Lund, and Charles Smith (6B). Nine boys in all - fantastic! The boys’ first event is the forthcoming Spring Tournament.
Tomorrow is the BOSS Fair. For some time now, the Y8s have been engaged in the considerable planning and preparation required to make the fair a fun occasion for the school, and a successful fundraising event for BOSS, and as such it is one of the annual, Senior School leadership projects. Thank you to the Y8s for their hard work in presenting this event, and to Mrs Eason and Mrs Gray for their facilitation.
The Friends’ Association Discos follow the fair in the hall, from 5.00-6-30pm for Y4-6 and 7.00-9.00pm for Y7-8. Please be prompt in collecting your son at the appropriate finishing time.
Haircuts
We have Photographs on the Tuesday after Show Weekend so please take the opportunity over the break to get that mid-term haircut to ensure your son’s sartorial elegance is preserved for posterity in the School Magazine, and that we are still looking smart for the major end-of-year events.
Correctly Named School Uniform
In addition to the plea in the Prep Schools’ Notices section that all Outdoor Ed clothing be named, school uniform needs to be named, and with the correct labeling, In the lost property basket at present, we currently have clothing from a number of boys who left us at some point in the previ-ous three years—don’t let your child's clothing meet the same fate!

Girls’ Prep School
With the end of examinations, comes a sigh of relief for pupils and the opportunity for teachers to begin the process of reporting your daughters progress during the year. The reports give a full picture of academic progress, but as we all know growth in social and emotional development is an ongoing process across our lives!
This short week gives families some extra time to connect and plan some time away – we wish you safe travels.
This week I had the privilege of meeting some of the parents of the girls who will be part of 4G next year, and welcoming them to the Girls’ School. I was reminded how much there is to learn and how important communication is to maintain good collaboration between home and school. We do look forward to the opportunities ahead to welcome the current year 3 girls starting with morning tea with the current year 4’s tomorrow and visiting the Boss Fair.
Success

Adelina Orwin (6G) who with along with her partner, placed and 4th and 5th positions during a recent Ballroom Dancing Competition, Juvenile Level 1 and 2.
All Music Festival Special Group Participants who represented our school with pride.
Grace Spurway (4G) gained the highest mark in her Jazz Grade 3 Examination.
Rebecca Harris (8G) who gained merit in grade 6 trombone.

Father Christmas visits pre-school!
Thank you to the pre-school class friends who arranged a
superb visit from Santa last weekend. With the generosity of
Mr Des Lines, owner of the private airfield and the vintage
planes on display, it was certainly a day to remember. Santa
flew in to give the children an early Christmas present
followed later by his helpers dropping lollies from above.
What a great way to start the Christmas celebrations, Santa
was very impressed with his enthusiastic welcome!
iPads for next year
The Friends are pleased to report that at last night’s Committee meeting we voted to use some of the monies
raised in the last year to buy 32 iPads for school. This will enable one iPad for each classroom with 2 pods of
further iPads to be booked out by teachers whenever required for use in their classes. We look forward to
seeing them in action next Term.
2014 Music scholarship
The Friends Committee also agreed to fund a further music scholarship during 2014.
