the scoop JUNE 6 2012 Welcome Hollie Stoddart, little sister of Jake and George! We look forward to sharing the successes of your learning journey during your time at Myross Bush School! Last week we had the pleasure of hosting a class from the Kura who were here as part of the classroom’s inquiry journey. They are investigating the bicultural nature of our society and in celebrating the special place the Maori culture has. We also had a Year 3/4 and a Year 5/6 team entered in the annual Southland South Spell competition at James Hargest last week. Well done for your efforts! We are continuing to work on the new classroom setup in our senior school for next term. We have the quality teachers, and we also want to give every child the quality time which lower class numbers gives. There will be some movement of students between Rooms 5, 7 & 8. Some of this movement will be into the ‘new’ classroom and some will be between the existing rooms. Unfortunately it is simply not as easy as taking 8 students from each room to create a new learning group. All angles are being considered and deliberated on, such as friendships, learning needs/styles, gender mix, numbers etc, as we try to get this ‘re-mix’ right. It is important to note that any new grouping, or change in existing grouping of the classrooms is not to ‘stream’ students according to any single element - whether it be learning or age related, or to tie any single teacher to a particular learning level. All of our teachers adapt their learning programmes across a range of learning levels. Our school philosophy is that mixed age classrooms and learning groups are a better representation of our individual learning pathways, and indeed, of life outside school. As I often say, the most important consideration about your child is not their chronological age but their own learning pathway which examples their talents, passions and abilities applicable at the appropriate curriculum level that they are progressing and achieving at. Our mid year reporting point (which is fast approaching) further examples this! Please note the inserted flyer about an upcoming parent workshop on a programme that we, and other schools have been using throughout different classroom levels. This initiative is supported by the Community Trust as the speaker, Wilson McCaskill, is very much in demand in both Australia and New Zealand. Please read the attached flyer to learn more. Welcome Hollie Stoddart, little sister of Jake and George!

We have the quality teachers, and we also want to give every child the quality time which lower class numbers

gives. There will be some movement of students between Rooms 5, 7 & 8. Some of this movement will be into the ‘new’ classroom and some will be between the existing rooms. Week 7 Term 2

MANUKA have no spelling homework for the next two weeks due to the extra maths 'fact-a-thon' homework. Thanks for your support with this - we are looking forward to the 'testing' day and showing how great we are with our basic facts - we have been doing some learning towards this at school too. Certificates Charlotte Dassen for basic facts and Caleb Devery for great spelling.

KOWHAI Welcome to Hollie Stoddart and her family, who started school today. We really enjoyed listening to Diane Ferlatte telling us stories yesterday. How lucky we are to have her come to our school! We are really working on reading with expression this week. We are recording ourselves on the computer and listening to it- do we sound smooth and fluent? In inquiry we are expressing our knowledge about our Maori culture through art. We are getting better at drawing koru patterns.Certificates: Lauryn Fleming, Scott Hoffman

RIMU Room Rimu are taking the assembly on Friday so watch out for special reading homework. This will help your child to confidently say their lines. We are hoping to get lots of parental support as this is only our second time running this event. We are all very excited and quite nervous too.Certificates Sarah Hay and Eliza Ringor.

RATA Yesterday we had a visit from a story teller called Diane Ferlatte.• I liked her because she was good at telling stories, Grace. • She told us interesting stories about her life, Harriet. • She was very expressive because she talked in a squeaky and tiny voice, Ethan.

Keep practising the basic facts for the Maths-a-thon. Just a reminder that children are not allowed to have toys at school. Thanks for your support Evelyn

MIRO were really excited to listen to Diane Ferlatte the story teller.• I liked the singing through the story telling. Adam• I like the way her stick was designed and the rythmn. Hannah

• I liked it when Will the pot got washed. Danja• I really liked the stories that she told us. Daniel•Hope the basic facts-a-thon practice and sponsorship is going well. If you have any questions, please email.Have a great week.

TOTARA We really enjoyed the magical experience that the Storyteller- Dianne Ferlatte created for us! We are intrigued that indigenous cultures such as the Maori didn't use traditional 'pens, paper and books', that the stories, histories, traditions and knowledge was all passed on orally and via art! We are deep in discussion planning our Mini Movie Documentaries about Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Certificates: Hannah Smith for working in a group to extend maths concepts. Emily Hay for being the very best speller that she can be. Kahn Pike for thinking about being on task and putting his best effort into everything he does. Amy Marwick for working hard to achieve great instant recall and application of basic facts

KAURI Benjamin - We started making some lines and circles art. We went over them with vivid and they really stand out. We are adding all our art in groups and making one big mixed up picture. We're doing this because we're practising our team work skills.

Katie J - We're learning about the three articles of the Treaty of Waitangi. They said that the King and Queen had the right to rule over NZ, the second said that the Maori had protection over their land and treasure and the last one said that all Maori have the same rights as a British person.

Mr Herring - Keep those plastic milk bottles coming! We have 150 now and need 300 more. Getting closer...

Assembly Duty: RimuCross Country Trophies have been engraved and will be presented to the winners on Friday at assembly. fro
