Cane Train Safety Awareness Last Thursday, our Year 5/6 class visited the Cane Train Safety Awareness session organised by the Isis Mill. They listened to a presentation from Emergency Service personnel and learnt how to act responsibly and safely around cane trains.

Read to Me Day Our Prep to Year 2 students enjoyed a great day at the Childers "Read to Me Day" last Wednesday. The theme of the day was "What

a Wonderful World", with all stories and activities based around different countries. We would like to say a special "Thank You" to the many community volunteers who helped make the day such a success.

NAPLAN ONLINE 2020 As you have probably heard in the media, NAPLAN testing is moving to an online format in 2020. This means moving NAPLAN from the current paper-based tests to computer-based assessments. NAPLAN Online features 'tailored testing' which gives students questions that may be more or less difficult and are more suited to their ability, resulting in better assessment and more precise results. Brisbane Catholic Education has been involved in significant planning, development, research and trialling to ensure that we are all ready to move NAPLAN online. In its first year of transition in 2018, just over 15 per cent of BCE schools participated in NAPLAN Online. The platform worked well and feedback from schools at the time of testing was that students found the online assessment engaging. During 2019, 80 BCE schools successfully participated in NAPLAN Online. All BCE schools are expected to be participating in NAPLAN Online in 2020. In preparation for NAPLAN Online, next week our Year 3/4 and 5/6 students will be participating in a SRT (School Readiness Test). The purpose of this is to enable the school to collect technical information so that necessary preparations can be made for May 2020. The SRT consists of two mini-tests:

• Omnibus for Year 3 – 6 students which includes a variety Numeracy and Literacy questions and

• Writing task for the Year 5/6 students only. Students do not login as themselves and no results are recorded – it is simply to ensure that the school has the required technical capabilities. To prepare the students for the SRT next week, they will have the opportunity in class this week to practice using devices and to familiarise themselves with the different question formats. This will involve a “training” session using tests that are available on the NAPLAN Public demonstration site (https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site). Please be assured that this process is to ensure that our students are completely comfortable with the new testing formats, and there is definitely no record of any results – they are practice tests only. The experience of other schools is that students find the new format more engaging and easy to use. If you have any queries questions, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. Karen Lindsay
