School Captain Induction

Last week Lis Bourke was officially inducted into her role as 2012 Nowendoc Public’s School Captain. Lis will now head off to Sydney for the Young Leader’s Conference wearing her badge with pride. Thank you to Lis for her pa-tience in gaining this honour and her persis-tence with naming a date for the assembly.

School Captain Assembly

An assembly is only a true Nowendoc Public Assembly if it has music, dra-matics and giggles...as you can see we had them all. Thank you to our fu-ture student, Blake Robards, for his direction and support! The children’s performance of ‘Feelings’ certainly entertained our audience. Thank you to the families and friends who joined us for our first assembly of the year.

Lis and Mrs Lyon Celebrate

After a year of embroidery and sewing lessons from Mrs Sue Lyon, Lis decided to enter some of her work into the Walcha Show Competitions. She was excited to have her favourite pieces on exhibition and very proud to discover that she had earned two Firsts, a Second and a Highly Commended.

It says something about the teaching/student relationship when a student can’t wait to share her excitement with her teacher, and when the teach-er’s grin of satisfaction embraces her face.

Congratulations Lis and Sue!

On Ya Soap Box - Tamworth

Mrs Worth’s Words

On Monday I had the pleasure of taking Lis to Tamworth to attend workshops on Public Speak-ing at Hillvue Public School. She was among 130 other students, including students from Woolbrook and Niangala, finding out why Public Speaking is not that scary. Public Speaking is seen as the number one fear of people world wide; people are more afraid of speaking in pub-lic than of dying!

Public Speaking is simply having a conversation with an audience, in this case with 130 other students. It is less personal than a one on one conversation. Presenting a speech in public has the following aims;

· to persuade · to inform · and to entertain an audience.

Lis participated in a variety of hands on activities including technology, body language, over-coming nerves, persuasive techniques and speech writing. One activity included students, in groups, recording each other, presenting a speech on Ipods. This allowed students to time their speech and play it back and see where they could improve it. Lis was chosen from her speech writing group to represent them on stage. She did a wonderful job maintaining eye contact with the audience and projecting her voice.

On Your Soap Box will be followed up with a Public Speaking Competition, between participat-ing schools, via Video Conferencing, in week 3 of next term.

Infants Playground Designs Parker—Year 1

My playground has:

A slippery slide that goes around and around and around and around and down to the water.

A very fast, twirly whirly machine that has a cage on it and a sign to keep you safe. A hopscotch where people don’t trip over. Customers will like it so it will get a few!

Phoebe—Kindy

Everybody will like my playground which is in a shop. It has a really fun slippery slide and there is water down the bottom of it. It closes at night time and opens in the daytime. There are hopping games which are brown. It has a tree to climb up. You need to take a big step to get into it. It has a river to swim in, with a bridge going over it so you can jump off it. It is

only little because if it was big no one would want to go down it.

Lucas - Kindy

My playground is a boat one. It has two doors which you go through and you come out another door and onto the pirate ship. It has a big slide which two people can go on be-

cause it is really big. At the bottom is a pool so you can slide into the water. Under the pool is a tunnel so you can go through the tunnel and out the other side of the ship to the doors. It has a really high ladder to climb up. Up the ladder is an angry bird’s nest which you can

go into. And of course, it has a pirate flag because it is a pirate ship!

This Monday I caught the bus up to the Tamworth turnoff where Mrs Worth picked me up and took me to Tamworth for On Ya Soap Box, a public speaking day. On the way we picked up the three senior Niangala students.

When we got to Tamworth we had to look for Hillvue Public School. Once we arrived at Hillvue we went to the hall. We arrived early so we had to wait.

When we went inside the first activities were warm ups for getting to know everybody. Then we had a recess break.

After recess we had to get into groups of three. Each group was given an iPod touch so we could video each other speaking and see what we looked and sounded like. The organ-isers explained how a good public speaker shows gestures, looks at the audience and us-es expression.

After lunch we were split into groups of about ten. Our task was to write a speech on, ‘We get too much homework’. Once we had written our speech each of us had to read our speech and the teacher in the group chose the one she liked the most to go up and pre-sent their speech in front of the audience.

Just my luck, it turned out to be me who had to go up in front of 130 other people and read my speech! But I thought I did pretty well. Lis Bourke - Year 6

Thanks to Lou Scott and her OS friend, Katie, for adding some special magic to our Crazy Hair Day. Katie will be back later in the year so is planning some more cir-cus skills and fun for the children.
