June 7 Session 1

Why We Read the Bible

Reading the Bible is an important part of the Christian

life. In this session, we will see that reading God’s Word

helps us grow in our relationship with God as we learn

more about Him and His ways. We also read God’s

Word in order to know how to live. Living on mission

for God’s kingdom, we must obey His commands and

guard ourselves from sin. God’s Word is to be a source

of joy, since in His word we come to know the story of

our world and we meet the Savior- Jesus Christ.

June 14 Session 2

While We Read the Bible

First, we are to read the Bible in the light of the Bible, which

means we shouldn’t isolate one text from the rest of

Scripture. Second, we are to reward the Bible as one great

story that points us to Jesus Christ. Finally, we are to read

the Bible in community with other believers so we can be

strengthened for the mission God has given us.

June 21 Session 3

Where We Read the Bible

We want to learn to read the Bible carefully, being

aware of the various contexts in which the words were

communicated. In this session, we will examine three

areas of context (literary, historical, and theological) and

why they are important as we seek to apply the Bible to

our lives today.

June 28 Session 4

How We Read the Old Testament

In this session and the next, we will take a look at the basic

guidelines for reading various genres found in the Bible.

Here we will consider four prominent types of literature

found in the Old Testament: narrative, law, poetry, and

wisdom. With each we consider important “rules of the

game” for how they can be read appropriately.
