FUN FACT Emanuel Schikaneder, Mozart’s librettist for The Magic Flute, was an actor, singer, and theater manager in 18th-century Vienna. Not only did he write the opera’s text, he also staged the 1791 world premiere, sang the role of Papageno, and even recruited several of his own family members to appear in the cast.
