INTRODUCTION

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh,

Welcome to the Weekend Islamic School (WIS) at Masjid al-Muslimin. Our

objective is to provide a structured Islamic education guided by the Qur‟an and the

Sunnah of the Prophet (S). We work together with this mission for the pleasure of Allah

(SWT) and strive to purify your intensions to pursue hard for His (SWT) sake only.

The school meets about three hours every Sunday for nine months, from the fall

to the end of the spring. That adds up to about thirty days of classes in a year. Within

this limited time span, we are committed to providing a rewarding learning environment

to achieve our goal.

The school has been restructured in the 2009-2010 academic year with totally new

curricula and with classes ranging from Pre-K/Kindergarten to Levels 1-8. The students‟

placement will correspond to their grade levels in their regular schools. Additionally,

structured adult classes will be offered to the students in high schools and colleges,

parents, and anyone else interested. The school timing also changed; it starts at 10:45am

and ends after Dhuhr salat or 2:00pm. “Muslim children growing in the US are facing diverse challenges and conflicting pressures at schools and

in friend circles. They are constantly influenced by mainstream youth culture. It is difficult to isolate them

from these influences and it is painful to let them sway into the mainstream. Excessive consumerism, peer

pressure, media culture, Internet, and technology confuse the youngsters’ mind about their ideal objective

in life.”

Parents trying to raise their children with an Islamic identity are being

increasingly challenged. Schools play big roles in shaping children‟s personalities. How

could a dose of a three-hour session in a weekend Islamic school undo the damaging

effect the children suffer through out the week? It is puzzling, but we cannot stop trying.

Besides, with Allah‟s Mercy, even this small potent dose of lessons from Aqeeda, Ibada,

Fiqh, Risalla, Islamic History, Quranic Studies and systematic lessons in Arabic, towards

learning the Quran with correct recitation and comprehension, will sustain and protect

our little souls throughout the week. InshaAllah with our sincere efforts, we can make

the Weekend Islamic School the stepping stone for the children, youth, and adults toward

understanding and accepting Islam as the chosen way of life.

Our request to the parents: please invest in your children! Let us work together

to empower our children with the knowledge of Islam, the knowledge most beneficial for

this life and life hereafter.

May Allah Rabbul Alamin accept and give Barakah to our efforts and guide us on

Sirratim Mustaqeem. Ameen!

Weekend Islamic School Masjid al-Muslimin

MISSION STATEMENT

To promote broad awareness of Islam for Muslim students studying in Pre-K to

12th

grade and college, parents and other adults, through Islamic teachings,

emphasizing the fundamentals, ideologies and legacies, guided by the Qur‟an and

the Sunnah. To this end, by using a comprehensive curriculum, carefully selected

text books, and knowledgeable instructors, the school is committed to

intellectually stimulate the students to grow up as responsible, practicing Muslims

choosing Islam as the way of life.

STAFF

Our staffs are all volunteers, mostly from a combination of professionals and

parents from the local Muslim community. Most of them hold degrees from

bachelors to Ph.D. including professional degrees, and have good to excellent

Islamic knowledge. Many of them have prior teaching experience in Islamic

schools.

STUDENTS

Admission is open to any student, male or female, who resides in the US,

irrespective of their immigration status. Since the main medium of instruction is

English, the ability of students to understand and communicate in English is

important. Students are placed in a grade commensurate with their regular school

grade. Any exception to this provision will be considered only on exigent basis.

CLASSES

All classes are co-educational. Boys and girls sit on different rows in the

classroom. Placement of a student in Arabic class may not follow the regular

school grades. Regardless of age of a student, based on the proficiency in Arabic

reading, he or she may be placed at a higher or lower level. The decision about

such placement will be made by the Arabic Studies‟ coordinator. If needed such

placement will be reviewed and approved by the principal.

CURRICULUM

The school will follow a systematic, comprehensive curriculum. The objective of

the curriculum is to provide a broad understanding of all aspects of Islam as

envisaged in the Mission Statement. The teachers, students and parents should get

familiar with the curriculum so that everyone knows what is being taught and

what to expect from students at each level and collectively, from the entire

program. The teachers will carefully follow the curriculum. The curriculum is

continuously being developed. Each class will be matched with appropriate

books and lessons.

ARABIC STUDIES

The Arabic curriculum is in developing stage, InshaAllah.

Students in Grades 1-8 have been placed in four different levels after being tested

for their proficiency in Arabic.

Five different Arabic classes, from beginners to advanced, are being offered to the

youths and adults. Some of these classes follow the much acclaimed LQToronto

program.

The following is an excerpt from the LQToronto website that shows the importance of

learning the Arabic Language:

WHY SHOULD I LEARN ARABIC? As Muslims we have no choice but to learn the Language of the Qur’an.

WHY?

BECAUSE ALLAH CHOSE THE ARABIC LANGUAGE TO CARRY HIS FINAL MESSAGE TO ALL MANKIND The Qur’an contains the exact words which Allah revealed to our beloved prophet-pbuh and the exact words which the Prophet recited. Nothing added or deleted. The “Qur’an” is NOT the “Qur’an” if it is not in the Arabic Language; otherwise it is a mere translation. As a Muslims we are obligated to recite the Qur’an in Arabic EVERY SINGLE DAY. Our SALAAH is in the Arabic Language. We cannot have khushoo and khuzoo in our Salaah until and unless we understand what we are saying in our Salaah. The Language of the Qur’an is a Miracle. THAT MIRACLE will never touch our hearts unless we learn and know the Language of the Qur’an. How can the Qur’an guide me and how can I ponder over it and implement the Guidance of the Qur’an in my daily life if I do not understand the Language of the Qur’an! This ARABIC LANGUAGE COURSE will provide you the knowledge to understand the Qur’an in its ORIGINAL MATN (original Arabic Text). Our first priority in this course will be to understand the Language of the Qur’an and then InshaAllah the speaking part of it will come gradually. Please remember if you are dedicated, serious and hardworking, you will achieve something most beautiful and rewarding in your life (i.e. the understanding of the Qur’an directly when you recite it or when the recitation is heard). The beauty, the Eloquence, the Magic, the Miracle and the Divine Wisdom of the Qur’an will penetrate the innermost depth of your heart and you will experience the joy and happiness which cannot be expressed but can only be felt in the Believer’s Heart. So get ready to work hard to learn the Language of the Qur’an.
