WEEKLY May 18, 1985 $1.00 Volume 42 No. 10 CHINA CRISIS FLAUNT NEW VIRGIN LP Virgin recording act China Crisis are on release with their 3rd album for the label, Flaunt The Imperfection. Black Man Ray has been taken as the first single, released in 7" and 12"formats. Flaunt The Imperfection was produced by ex -Steely Dan member Walter Becker at Parkgate Studio in Sussex, England. The LP represents Becker's first production work since leaving Steely Dan and moving to Hawaii over 3 years ago. The 2 core members of China Crisis, Eddie Lundon (guitars, vocals, occasional key- boards) and Garry Daly (Keyboards, vocals, occasional guitars), met while attending school in Liverpool. The duo, who shared an appreciation of Stevie Wonder, Eno, and David Bowie, began making tapes as part of a collective at school. They ultimately con- tinued their songwriting following school between jobs as beer pump maker, hair- dresser, and roof tiler. Their debut recorded effort was African And White, released as a single on the small Liverpool label, Inevi- table. Virgin Records subsequently signed the duo, and in May of 1982, a Virgin single appeared - Scream Down On Me. Virgin re- released African And White in July of that year. Concurrent with the release of a 3rd single - No More Blue Horizons - in late 1982, the duo did concert dates in the U.K. augmented by other musicians. In November of 1982, a debut LP was released, the full title of which was Difficult Shapes And Passive Rhythms - Some People Think It's Fun To Entertain. Christian was released as a single. The 2nd China Crisis LP was Work- ing With Fire And Steel, Possible Pop Songs Volume II. In Canada, the title track was the band's debut single, followed by Wishful Thinking - released in May of 1984. Working With Fire And Steel was the band's debut in Canada. Besides Lundon and Daly, China Crisis is: Kevin Wilkinson (drums, percussion), and Gary Johnson (bass). Producer Becker contributed synthesizer and percussion on the session. Johnson, Lundon, and Daly penned all the material for the album which includes The Highest High, Strength Of Character, You Did Cut Me, Wall Of God, Gift Of Freedom, King In A Catholic Style, Blue Sea, and Bigger The Punch I'm Feeling . . . ... The World Spins - I'm Part Of It. Regarding the song material, Daly recently told the Record Mirror's Eleanor Levy: "We got round a piano and sang these songs; they could even be covered by other people." In the same interview, Daly commented on Walter Becker: "He's a fantastic man. A real 'song' person. He didn't know who Trevor Horn was, which was brilliant. He lives in Hawaii and has only been to this country (Britain) twice, and the second time was to record with us. It was really weird, this bloke walking round with all these Scousers (Liverpud- lians) in the country down south looking for the beach and the coconuts". Flaunt The Imperfection presents strong writing combined with Walter Becker's occasionally overpowering production style. You Did Cut Me sports smooth vocals reminiscent of Becker's tenure with Steely Dan, while The Highest High has an almost Jazzy feel to it - spurred on by a lilting synth riff. Black Man Ray's melancholic mood is leavened somewhat by its fluid, entrancing melody line. Flaunt The Imperfection is another notch on the China Crisis belt, and an aus- picious - if hesitant - production debut for Walter Becker. As previously reported in RPM, Virgin has employed a unique national campaign to generate interest in the new release, utiliz- ing a jeweller's bag and 6 bogus diamonds as the- promotional focus. Shorewood Packaging has manufactured a special 2 - colour poster (blue and silver) for selected recipients in the PolyGram sales force, as well as radio and retail people. The first 15,000 copies of Flaunt The Imperfection will contain a 7" copy of a track entitled Animalistic - unavailable on the LP. - Newman2nd single (Gigolo) from David Lee Roth'ssolo EP Crazy From The Heat has fuelledsales figures for the EP.

"We moved 20,000 units of Honey-moon Suite's LP in April," says Newman, referring to a major Canadian signing onthe label. "The Stay In The Light single(the LP's 3rd) is carrying the LP alongnicely."

Newman is also expecting Prince tofollow through at retail with his new set,Around The World In A Day, which re-ceived mixed reviews from the critics, butwhich is selling steadily. "We hope that thefirst single, Raspberry Beret, will give usthat little extra push," continues Newman.

WEA's 1st quarter '85 runs December,January, and February.

Newman concludes with "I'm havingtrouble filling back orders. All aspects ofthe last 6 months are just outstanding."

A&M prepares launch for Supertramp's 9thA&M is pulling all stops in the promotionof Supertramp's 9th album, set for a

May 13th. release. The release date co-incides with a label bash at Toronto'sDiamond, as well as a tie-in with Much -Music.

The band: lead vocalist Rick Davies, saxman John Helliwell, bassist DougieThomson, and drummer Bob Sienbenbergwill be on hand for the promotion. It'sinteresting to note that Supertramp havesold in excess of 35 million records, theirmost successful albums being, Crime OfThe Century, Crisis? What Crisis, Even InThe Quietest Moments, and Breakfast InAmerica.

Helliwell was asked recently why it isthat Supertramp has been such a force inrock music since 1973. "The key reasonswhy we've kept going on," explains Helli-well, "is that our roots go pretty deep com-pared to some bands whose influences mayonly go back a few years. Our roots go backquite a long time - jazz, R&B, The Beatles, and the '50s and '60s."

Supertramp has a soft spot in theirheart for Canada, and in particular theCanadian operation of A&M. It was through

A&M that Supertramp became a nationally -recognized name in Canada before becomingone of the world's premiere bands, and arestill considered "totally unique" to theCanadian market. They enjoyed twinmillion -selling albums with Crime andBreakfast and have sold more than 5 millionrecords in Canada alone.

Supertramp (Roger Hodgson, Dougie Thom-son, Rick Davies, and John Anthony Helli-well) back in 1979, with Charly Prevost, when Winnipeg Mayor Bill Norrie madethem Honourary Citizens of the city.

Born In The USAtop seller - CBSBruce Springsteen's Born In The USA al-bum is now listed by Columbia as the"biggest selling album" in the history ofthe label. The album, still in the Top 10of the RPM 100, topped the chart on July7, 1984, a position it held for 7 weeks. Thealbum is now well over 9 times platinumin Canada (900,000 units sold).

Of the 4 singles released from the album,Cover Me, Born In The USA, I'm On Fireand Dancing In The Dark, the latter hassurpassed the platinum level. A 5th singlefrom the album, Glory Days, is beingreadied for release. The Springsteen imageis also being stroked with the popularity ofhis Trapped track from the USA For AfricaLP. There are no plans to issue this track asa single at time of writing.

It's expected Born In The USA will hitdiamond status in Canada shortly. "Theway it's been selling," says Don Oates,Vice President of Marketing & Sales forCBS Records Canada "at the longest periodI would say the LP will hit the diamondmark within a month. With the 5th single, itcould very well be as soon as 2 weeks."

Oates was reluctant to say how far hethinks the Springsteen album will go, inview of his early predictions of MichaelJackson's Thriller album, which had sur-passed expectations.

"It depends on a number of things,"Oates continues. "Whether there will bemore concert dates, and if there's moresingles. There's more songs on the albumthat are strong enough to be singles."

The Springsteen phenomenon is notan overnight happening. He has been in thebusiness for more than 15 years, and itwasn't too long ago when his album sales, which weren't too significant, were pri-marily confined to the Ontario market.Much of this was due his touring of Ontario.

"Bruce has been on the borderline ofbecoming a big star for many years," Oatesexplains. "His River album showed thepotential for big sales, but it was a doublealbum. I think the Springsteen fan, beingin the older demographic, is more apt tobe album buyers. Touring was the mostessential part. This man is incredibly strongonstage. Nobody can go to a show and notget caught up in the energy - nobody. There's also a mystique and charisma abouthim." Oates concludes with: "Even at theUSA For Africa recording session, othername artists were in awe of him."

Someone's gonna get burned . . . !!Just because someone's from the boon-docks doesn't mean they're going to laydown and play dead when the big cityslickers make a move on them. There's a"boonie" who is in the process of gatheringa very powerful defense that could make theYonge Street crowd very uneasy.

Where's Hatfield when we need him ..?That talk of a CD plant for Ontario, toopen by February for $6 million . . soundslike a pipedream, particularly since the bigbust. There was a project underway, a fewmonths ago, with the New Brunswickgovernment . . . . and a major label . . . tofinance a CD plant for the Moncton area. The press apparently got hold of the detailsand mounted a devastating editorial attackthat created enough panic to have thegovernment back out. They didn't wantanother Bricklin on their hands. Perhapsthe timing wasn't right . . . . but now, withthe growing popularity of Compact Discs, and if someone has $30 million to layout - a CD operation could make sense.

Determination pays off!!!Nice to see Paul Orescan moving up in thebusiness - now taking on the job of ProductManager for I.R.S. Paul's only been in thebusiness 2 years, having apprenticed atA&M, first with Michael Godin in A&R,

Let's be fair!!!CBS Records Canada has become aware ofretail outlets that are pricing the charitysingles Tears Are Not Enough and We AreThe World above the suggested list of $2.49.

It is very disappointing to CBS RecordsCanada to think that these retailers wouldtake advantage of the popularity of thisitem by increasing its price in order to makea profit. In pricing the singles, CBS madeevery effort to ensure that the rackjobbersand retailers would be able to recoup out ofpocket expenses. The cost prices establishedfor our accounts on these singles weresubstantially higher than regular with thedifference being collected by CBS RecordsCanada Ltd. on behalf of our accounts andtransferred to the Northern Lights ForAfrica (Society) and USA For Africa.

CBS Records would like the consumer toknow that every effort has been made toensure that these singles retail at the Suggest-ed List Price of $2.49 (or less) and thatall profits from their sales at this price willbe contributed to the appropriate charitablesociety.

Heaven a hit for Adams -

Heaven, the latest A&M single release by Bryan Adams is on the way to becoming a

hit in Canada - for some radio stations

- the second time a-

round. Although never released as a single in Canada or

the U.S. commer- cially, nor as a radio

only disc, Heaven was one of the high-

lighted tracks on the soundtrack by the

same title, a sound- J.P. Guilbert track released by A&M that featured several

big name acts. In view of the popularity of Adams at that time, some radio stations carted the track which was then given heavy exposure.

J.P. Guilbert, Director of Promotions for A&M Records Canada, explained that

there were some radio programmers who believed it would be unwise to release the

song as a single, in view of the heavy airplay

Bryan Adams was the special guest as CFOX-FM presented the Canadian debut of Rockline, which has been on the air in

the U.S. for the past 4 years. Listeners from across North America, had the chance to

talk directly to Adams.

it had already garnered - some saying they

wouldn't air the single. "It was already a hit in Canada and radio listeners loved the song although they

couldn't buy it as a single," Guilbert recalls. "Some readio people told me we were crazy

to release it as a single, but if they had a live version they might play it."

Guilbert went on to explain that "The song never got that much attention in the U.S. originally, so I suggested they go ahead and release the single first. They did, and

they created the base for the song." The U.S. released gained almost immediate

trade chart action and A&M Canada then released the single with the commercial version on one side and the live version

on the flip.

second time around Guilbert pointed out that A&M Canada

usually builds Cancon acts in Canada first. However, in the case of Adams, with such

strong initial U.S. reaction to Heaven, the Canadian operation was forced to

release the single, which is now bulleting up the RPM 100 Singles chart.

More African relief with Sask. release

A project organized by Saskatoon -based songwriter Bryan Arndt will result in the

release of an African benefit song this summer. Arrangements have been made to

record Let's Fight The Hunger at Studio West (near Saskatoon) in July.

The musicians who will record the song will be known collectively as Wheat Heart.

Arndt, inspired by other benefit efforts in Canada, the U.S., and the U.K., wrote the

song's lyrics, and collaborated with North Battleford musician/songwriter Cory Hilde-

brand on the music. Says Arndt: "Some people will say that

we are just jumping on the bandwagon . . .

. . . but we say 'why not'. Not only is it

something positive the local music com- munity can do, but our project is timely

and I think the whole idea will catch on." Arndt hopes to keep 10% of the monies generated by the song in Saskatchewan to

be distributed -to a variety of organiza- tions".

Blaine Wilkins, speaking for Studio West, says the single should be ready for retail province -wide by late August. Further

Valdy debuts on Duke Street

Valdy is on release with his debut LP for the Duke Street label, titled Notes From

Places. It's That Melody has been

taken as the first single. Produced by Claire Lawrence, Notes From Places marks Valdy's first "pop" release in 4

years. The LP was recorded at the Pine-

wood and Mush- room studios in

Vancouver, and mixed at Le Studio in Quebec. Notes qualifies as 4 parts Cancon.

Valdy characterizes the record as "an evolution of styles", and says he feels that,

to him, his vocal "has never sounded bet- ter." A recording artist for over a decade,

Valdy came to prominence with his 1972 single, Rock And Roll Song. In the inter- vening years, he has forged a reputation as

a hardworking (almost 250 dates a year) and articulate singer/songwriter. He notes that "editing has kept Notes From Places'

songs generally in the country and adult contemporary area".

At this writing, Valdy was preparing to return to British Columbia to appear in

an episode of CBC-TV's The Beachcombers. Valdy attended the Big Country Awards,

held in Toronto (Apr. 28) during which he presented the Country Single of The Year

Award to Balmur's Leonard Rambeau, on behalf of Anne Murray for her duet with

Dave Loggins titled Nobody Loves Me Like You Do.

One upcoming date of note for Valdy is May 23 at Toronto's Ontario Place.

Roth video highlights WEA compilation WEA Video Compilation No. 34 is high-

lighted by the David Lee Roth cut of Just A Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody. The single

has made impressive gains up the RPM 100 singles chart and brought even greater at- tention to his album, Crazy From The

Heat. The single has also become top fare for A/C programmers.

Also included on the WEA compilation are:

Registration I for MUSEXPO ,8

Early indications are that participation in MUXEXPO '85 (the 10th International

Record/Video and Music Industry Market to be held in London Oct. 16-18) will surpass

that of previous dates. The the period end- ing Mar. 30, participation was up 22$ as

compared with the same period for the last event in Acapulco, Mexico.

Said Roddy Shashoua, MUSEXPO Chair-

man: "We are experiencing a sizable renew- ed interest in the music business generally

and toward MUSEXPO '85 and VIDEXPO `85. London, which I firmly believe is the

world's creative music centre today, is

proving to be a universally suitable and agreeable location to all companies con-

tacted, the marjorty of whom are now con- firming their participation requirements at

MUSEXPO '85." he conludes with "We expect 1985 to be an excellent foundation

year for having MUSEXPO, now in it's 10th year, successfully in London annually."

making a contribution to the Northern Lights For AfricaSociety, based on the sales

of the Tears Are Not Enough single. Saturn Distributing has been asked to monitor the

shipments of the single to all Sears stores. Saturn, who supply the single to their clients

- at their cost - initially shipped more than 5,000 pieces of the 7" single to the

Sears stores in Ontario and Quebec.

Sweet 202 debuts with single Vancouver -based Perry Smith and Sweet

202 have released their first single, I Can't Dance, a Smith original, on the Sweet 202

label. The pop -rock single, produced by Smith, is distributed through MacDylan Music. The group's manager, Francisco de

la Vega, points out that "Perry Smith has concentrated his efforts to the development

of the band, exclusively, in the studio, in preparation for a concert to debut wholly

original material," concluding with "The group's music carries with it, a certain

optimism." The band was formed in 1984.

Arrows prep for new A&M LP A&M recording act The Arrows are set to

record their 2nd LP for the label. Larry Alexander - currently working with Simon

LeBon and Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran -

will co -produce with David Tyson. The lat- ter produced their debut, Stand Back.

Sessions for the new LP are slated to begin in June at a Toronto studio. Sept. 1 has

been given as a tentative release date. The Arrows are managed by Spontaneous

Productions of Toronto.

Rational Youth's Heredity launch in Mon- treal (I to r) Andre Menard (Spectrum), Guy

Brouillard (CKOI-FM), Richard Gamache (Capitol), Tracy Howe (Rational Youth).

Tour dates set for Cohen Leonard Cohen will move out into the country on a promotion tour to support the

release of Various Positions, his first LP in 5 years, and almost 10 years since he

has agreed to tour. The LP was released in Europe during Christmas season, to coin-

cide with his European tour and to date the LP has sold more than 250,000 copies.

Canadian dates began in Ottawa on May 9, followed by Montreal (10), Toronto (11),

Winnipeg (14), and Vancouver (15). The dailies have been eager to interview Cohen,

resulting in excellent coverage.

PolyGram/Telarc ink agreement PolyGram Canada and Telarc have announc-

ed an agreement whereby the former will handle marketing of Telarc compact discs in

Canada. One of the first U.S. companies to market CD product, Telarc now sells 7 CDs

for every 3 LPs. Established sellers in the company's CD line are Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, and

Aaron Copeland's Fanfare For The Com- mon Man. New releases include Andre

Previn's recording of Tchaikovsky's Sym- phony No. 5, Requiem by Berlioz, and The Piano Concertos (Nos 2 and 4) by Beethoven.

Winter to Duke Street Margaret Winter has been appointed Pro- duction Coordinator for Duke Street

Records. Formerly with the Ready label, Winter takes over the chores of Bill Bobek

who moves over to MuchMusic as National Publicity Manager. The latter was highly respected by the Duke Street people, who

credit him with being "an excellent publi- cist and spokesman for the company, pro-

ducing some of the best promotional/press coverage enjoyed by any Canadian artist."

He was instrumental in the success of singer Jane Siberry's No Borders Here LP, which

acquired a U.S. deal.

Clapton to Kingswood Duck/WEA recording artist Eric Clapton has

been firmed for a June 21 date at the Kings - wood Music Theatre, located just north of

Toronto. Clapton, who sold out his 1983 date at Kingswood, is regarded by many as one of the true 2nd generation guitar

heroes. Behind The Sun, Clapton's current LP, has cracked the Top 20 on the RPM 100.

Support for Clapton will be Graham Parker & The Shot, an Elektra recording act.

Tears For Fears dates firmed Initial Canadian tour dates have been an-

nounced for Tears For Fears. They open at London, Ontario's Alumni Hall (May 25),

followed by Kitchener's Centre In The Square (26), Hamilton Place (27), Toronto's Massey Hall (May 30 through June 1),

Ottawa's Civic Centre (3), and Montreal's Theatre St -Denis (4 through 6). Other

dates are pending. The group's current LP, Songs From The Big Chair is very

close to topping the RPM 100 after only 11 weeks on release. Shout, taken as a

single from the album, topped the RPM 100 singles survey on Mar. 30 after only 8 weeks

on release, a position it held for 2 weeks. Everybody Wants To Rule The World, the

band's current single, has already cracked the Top 10 of the RPM 100, after only

5 short weeks since entering the chart.

CLIO nomination for CKGM Keith Grigsby, Creative Director for Mon- treal's CKGM, reports that a public service

message created for CKGM and McDonald's Restaurants by Ruth Ilyse, Creative Co-

ordinator for Maisonneuve Broadcasting, has been nominated for a CLIO Award. The

winners will be announced at the Awards Presentation which will take place at NYC's

Waldorf Astoria (June 14). The radio message was created to promote the Toys

For Tots Christmas drive promotion which was sponsored by CKGM and MacDonald's.

Grigsby also points out that Ilyse was re- cently honoured with an award for creative

excellence during the Ad and Sales Execu- tive Club of Montreal's first annual Radio Day Awards. She was the only creative

writer from a radio station to win such an award.

CBC promo'ing folk While folk music has taken a bit of a back-

seat to today's music forms, CBC Radio en- deavours to keep folk a part of the main-

for folk music with the 25th celebration of the Mariposa Folk Festival. During July Bob

Chelmick will air highlights from Mariposa's 25th anniversary festival as well as carrying

its closing night concert live (July 28). Simply Folk will also air highlights from the

Winnipeg and Vancouver Folk Festivals in July, and in August will visit the Maritimes.
