The American Association of University Women (AAUW)

Gaylord Area Branch will be hosting a Get Acquainted!

    event on January 15 from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the

Gaylord Area Council for the Arts (GACA) gallery at 125 E.

Main Street in Gaylord. The event is open to anyone who

wants to learn more about what AAUW is and what the

Gaylord Area Branch does in our local community.

We are excited to share what we do with the Otsego

County community, said Membership VP, Jane Sekora. It

will be a great time to chat with current members, enjoy

some refreshments, and learn how we work towards our mis-

sion of encouraging women to continue their education.

Attendees will learn about AAUW and what the group does.

They will also meet current AAUW members and learn what

    the group has to offer.

AAUW is a nationwide organization that advances equity

for women and girls through advocacy, education, philan-

thropy, and research. The Gaylord Area Branch does this in a

number of ways including raising money for scholarships for

women continuing their educations, honoring local women

    at the annual Woman

    Making History luncheon,

    celebrating graduating high

school seniors at a fall event,

and sponsoring programs toinspire girls to pursue edu-

    cational goals.

With Christmas out of the way, many of us are trying to fig-

ure out how we are going to pay off all those credit card bills

from all of that shopping and still be able to eat. If you are

one of the families lucky enough to have had someone off

work for a couple weeks for holiday shutdowns, you may be

suffering even more right now. But there is help. Whether

you need assistance in getting food for your household, or

just need a cheap place to shop, Oscoda County has many

    places that can help you.

For food Mio has a couple wonderful discount stores.

Discount Foods is a bent and dent store that is open 7 days a

week, located right in town next to the Shell station at 210 N.

Morenci. They have a little bit of everything, and more than

just food. Some items are outdated, so if you're picky you

will need to check expiration dates. They carry lots of cereal,

canned goods, household items, milk, bread, spices, makeup

and more. There is also Country Corners, a nd Amish owned

bulk foods store located at 1284 W. Kittle in Mio. They are

open Monday to Saturday, closed on Sunday. They also carry

bent and dent groceries, household items, crafty stuff, lots of

books, supplements and a wonderful variety of bulk foods

and spices, for reasonable prices. As well, they often have

bacon or lunch meats, eggs, and other cold grocery items.

And they have the best selection of cheese in the area.

If you can't afford food at all, many of the community

churches have food pantries. More information on them can

be gotten by contacting Oscoda County DHS or Love, Inc. in

    Fairview.

If you need clothing, furniture, or other household items

not food, Mio is home to a couple resale shops that are sure

to have what you are looking for. On Morenci, next to Rite

Aid, is Strawberry Patch. Strawberry Patch has a lot of

clothes, books and more. They have a off back room where

you can also get clothes for $4 a bag. Then there is Finders

Keepers on 8th St, just west of Family Dollar. Also a thrift

store, Finders Keepers has a lot of clothing for all ages, tons

of books, furniture, shoes, and household items.

Learn how you can keep more money from your timber

harvest at this two part workshop January 23 presented bySusan Metcalfe of Metcalfe Forestry LLC & Burns Timber Tax

    Service

Paying taxes is a nasty business in the forestry world, but

luckily, Susan is here to help! During the first hour of our

workshop, Susan will be discussing a range of topics involv-

ing your potential taxes on the money earned by buying and

selling timber, and how to keep more money in your pocket

& pay less in tax. This talk will also cover myths common in

the forestry and accounting communities, explain about the

capital gains treatment of the purchase and sale of timber,

give valuable tips on how some loggers can drastically

reduce their regular income and tax liability, and how some

landowners can pay no tax on their timber sale revenue.

How can I save money on my forested acreage? Is there

some kind of tax incentive program I can enroll in? In the

second hour of our discussion, Lora Freer will be discussingthe Qualified Forest Program and the Commercial Forest Act.

These two programs are meant to reduce taxes for forest land

owners that make an effort to manage their woodlands for

anything ranging from timber production, to wildlife habitat,

to recreation, and much more. Tax reduction programs are

presented by District Forester Lora Freer of Ogemaw &

    Oscoda Conservation Districts.

This workshop will be held Thursday January 23rd from

5:30pm-7:30pm at the AuSable River Center, 211 N. Main St.

in Roscommon. For more information or to RSVP, please

contact Brittany Mauricette, District Forester for the Otsego

    Conservation District and Roscommon Conservation

    District. Call 989-732-4021 or e-mail bmauricette@otsego-

    14/16

    By James Conway

When you got married, you and your part-

ner probably discussed all sorts of things,

from the Mercedes you wished you were driv-ing to how many kids you wanted and where

you wanted to be in twenty years. If you

havent already found out, time and circum-

stances can change those plans almost from

moment to moment. One of the most impor-

tant things you can do for yourself, your

spouse and your children is to make sure that

the discussion of plans, goals and dreams

never stops. Your family can work as a team to

meet goals and handle setbacks. While you

might find that you cant get everything you

wanted starting out, you just might find, to

quote a Sixties rocker, you get what you need.

Here are some things to keep in mind.

    1. Things do change. The important thing isto keep the ball rolling in a positive direction,

even if its a new one. You might find after a

couple of years that you hate the job that was

going to be your lifelong occupation. You

might have twins. A thousand things can hap-

pen, so dont look upon obstacles or the unex-

pected as failures, but as challenges and

    opportunities.

    2. Keep the conversation going. If there is a

single thing that can cause problems in a marriage or in a family, it is the gradual ero-

    sion of communication over

    time. Jobs become more

    demanding and stressful, the

    needs of children intervene,

    expectations become written

in stone. Even if you cant

    have a family dinner every

night of the week, schedule at

    least one night when all

    screens are off, the answer-

ing machine is on and you

    have a family roundtable

    where everyone can update

    everyone else on whats going

on in their lives, and in their

    heads.

    3. Start a Book of the

Family. If you look in your

    family Bible or Baby book,

you may just find that the last

thing you wrote down aboutanyone in your family was

the day they were born and

    how much they weighed.

    Keep a yearly scrapbook (or

    special box) of photographs,

    kids drawings, awards, arti-

cles and so on, plus a diary

    for which someone takes the

    responsibility to chronicle

the family perhaps once a week at the fami-

ly meeting. Be as high or as low tech as you

want, but make sure that every year at holiday

time you have something to look back on and

    be thankful for.

    4. Coordinate your lives. Every once in a

while, or every day, one or more family mem-

bers can find themselves working at cross

purposes to everyone else, whether its need-

ing to be picked up from soccer practice or

considering a job transfer from across the

country. These are family decisions, and

should be discussed and worked out in such a

way that everyone can participate, even if it

means making compromises. Some of the

best lessons you can teach your children is

that things dont happen just by magic, and

that many of the things they want require

work and sacrifice. This doesnt mean empha-

sizing that you worked like a slave for five

hours to buy that Barbie doll. It means thateveryone bands together to solve problems

and help each other meet new challenges.

    5. Learn, accept, and evolve. If you make

the effort over time to communicate, chroni-

cle and coordinate your familys lives, dreams

and goals in both the short and long term,

you may find that this step comes naturally.

Every generation contributes new ideas andinformation that you can either close out or

be open to. If you shut down your ability to

learn something new about the world, about

a family member or about others, youre shut-

ting down the engine that keeps your family

going. Follow the old adage of accepting the

inevitability of change with grace and wis-

dom. Your daughter may give up champi-

onship tennis for medicine, you son may

abandon the law for auto mechanics. With

luck, these things may not come as a surprise,

but once youve processed all the pros and

cons, accept change and incorporate it into

your family celebration. Holding onto the

past is absolutely the best way of shutting out

    the future.
