Epidemiological week no. 8 (18 to 24 February 2011) 63 districts in 4 provinces provided surveillance data to the DEWS. This system is gradu- ally expanding to provide information about communicable disease threats in all parts of Pakistan as the country goes through the recovery process. 2,403 fixed health and 8 mobile medical outreach centres provided surveillance data for this week. A total of 810,577 consultations were reported through DEWS of which 30% were acute respiratory infections (ARI), 8% skin disease, 6% acute diarrhoea, and 6% were suspected Malaria. A total of 49 alerts were reported in this bulletin: 1 update from week seven, and 48 from week eight. Altogether 20 alerts were for Measles; 5 for meningitis, 4 each for Neonatal Tetanus, and Pertussis; 3 for H1N1; 2 each for Chickenpox, Bloody Diarrhoea, and Den- gue Hemorrhagic Fever; while 1 each for ARI, Acute Jaundice Syndrome, Diphtheria, Suspected Malaria, Mumps, Rabies, and Tetanus. Since July 29, 2010, a total of 1,627,730 acute diarrhea patient consultations have been reported to DEWS from the disaster affected districts of 4 provinces in Pakistan.   

In the graph at right, DEWS weekly reports received in 2011 are compared to the reports of 2010 and 2009 from disaster‐affected districts.  This week, DEWS received 52,443 reports of acute diarrhea, 6% of total con‐sultations. This is the same proportional morbidity (6%) reported by DEWS in week‐8/2010 and the same from week‐8/2009.

Since July 29, 2010, a total of 4,334,636 Acute Respiratory Infection (both Upper and Lower)  patient consultations have been reported to DEWS from the disaster affected districts of 4 provinces in Pakistan.   

 In the graph at right, DEWS weekly reports received for ARI in 2011 are com‐pared to the reports of 2010 and 2009 from disaster‐affected districts.  This week, DEWS received 246,792 reports of Acute Respiratory Infection, 30% of total consultations, this is same proportional morbidity reported by DEWS in week‐8/2010 but 1% high reported in week‐8/2009.

Epidemiological Bulletin: DEWS Response in Pakistan

Province Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

• This week 14 districts reported to DEWS from KP province, 538 health centers reported 153,106 patients consultations to DEWS.

• ARI is the leading disease in KP province. ARI cases reported 59,941 (40%), 1% lower propor-tional morbidity as compared with last week.

• 12 alerts were reported in this Bulletin from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, of which 5 were for Measles, 3 were for Influenza, while 1 each for Mumps, Bloody Diarrhoea, Diphtheria, and Meningitis.

Province Punjab • 12 districts reported data to DEWS from Punjab

province, 718 fixed health centers reported a total of 201,023 patient consultations during this reporting period

• ARI cases reported were 56,433 (28%), 2% higher proportional morbidity as compared with last week.

• 2 alerts were reported in this bulletin, 1 each was for Measles, and Acute Jaundice Syndrome.

• Malaria cases are still reported from some dis-tricts. This week a total of 5,179 malaria samples were tested of which 174 were positive (slide positivity rate 3.4%, while falciparum rate was 43.7%.)

Epidemiological Bulletin: DEWS Response in Pakistan

Province Sindh

• This week 20 districts reported to DEWS from Sindh province, and 808 health centers re-ported a total of 390,847 patient consultations during the reporting period of week 8, 2011. 

 

• In Sindh, ARI cases reported were 111,257 (28%), 1% lower proportional morbidity as compared with last week

• 37 alerts are reported from Sindh in this Bulle-tin: 13 were for suspected Measles; 4 each were for Meningitis, ARI, Neonatal Tetanus, and Pertussis, 2 each were for Chickenpox, Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever, while 1 each was for Bloody Diarrhoea, Suspected Malaria, Rabies, and Tetanus.

Province Balochistan

 

• In this week, 15 districts reported to DEWS from Balochistan province. 333 fixed and 8 mobile medical outreach centers reported a total of 57,017 patient consultations.  

• ARI reported in 16,299 (29%) of the total consulta-tions, which is 1% lower as compared to the propor-tional morbidity last week. 

• 1 alert was reported for week 8 in this Bulletin: the alert was for Measles.

• Malaria cases are still reported from some of the districts in Balochistan. This week a total of 641 malaria samples were tested of which 268 were posi-tive and slide positivity rate was 41.8%, while falcipa-rum rate was 72.8%.

Distribution of Wild Polio Virus cases Pakistan 2010 and 2011

Year 2010: The total number of polio cases in 2010 so far is 144 includ-ing 120 type-1 cases and 24 type-3 cases and the total number of infected districts/towns/agencies is 40 to date.

Year 2011: The total number of new type-1 polio cases were confirmed by the laboratory is 11 to date.
