According to the National Retail Federation’s (NRF’s) annual survey, the average family with children in grades K–12 had completed only 45% of their shopping as of early August. 3) Discounter Lidl has become the UK’s seventh-largest grocery retailer, according to new data from market measurement firm Kantar Worldpanel. Lidl grew its UK sales by 18.9% in the 12 weeks ended August 13. Aldi, the UK’s fifth-largest grocery retailer, grew sales by 17.2%. 4) Alibaba has continued its push into Southeast Asia after leading a $1.1 billion investment in Tokopedia, an e- commerce firm based in Indonesia. FacialRecognition:ComingSoontoaSmartphoneNearYouFacialrecognitionhaslongbeenthestuffofsciencefiction,withbooksandmoviesincludingscenesoffacialorretinalscansbeingusedtoidentifyentrantstosensitivemilitarycomplexes.Thetechnologyhasalsobeenusedforcertainnichepurposesformanyyears,suchastokeepcriminalsandundesirablesoutofgamblingcasinos.Inaddition,theCityofLondonhasasmanyasamillionCCTVcamerasstationedthroughoutthecityinordertohelpidentifyandcatchsuspectedbadguys.

Now,facialidentificationiscomingtoasmartphonenearyou.Advancesinartificialintelligenceoverthepastfewyears,particularlytheuseofdeep-learningtechnologyforpatternrecognition—combinedwithinexpensive,high-resolutionimagesensorsincellphones—haveputthetechnologyinthepalmsofourhands.

Apple,whichhashistoricallycombinedoff-the-shelftechnologiesininnovativewaysandthenusedsavvymarketingtopushitsnewproducts,oftenreceivescreditfor“inventing”novelapproaches.ThecompanyisonceagainattheepicenterofbuzzwithitsupcomingiPhonemodels,whicharerumoredtoincludefacialrecognitionhardware.RecentiPhonemodelsrelyonafingerprintsensorthatworkswiththe“home”buttontoidentifytheuser,butfuturemodelsarethoughttoincludeanall-glassfrontscreen.Thatwouldnegatetheneedforthebutton,butalsoeliminatethespotwherethefingerprintsensorwaslocatedonoldermodels.

ThenewiPhone8isexpectedtoincludeanarrayofinfraredlaserscalledverticalcavitysurface-emittinglasers(VCSELs),whichwillcapturea3Dimageoftheoperator’sface.Althoughfacialrecognitionisatrickytask,itismuchsimplertoidentifyasubject’sfacialfeaturesfromjustafewfeetawaythanitistoidentifythemfromagrainysurveillancevideocapturedbyacamerapositionedonawallorbuildingmuchfartheraway.Removingthesolefront-panelbuttonfromtheiPhonewouldalsoboostthephone’soverallminimalism,whichwouldlikelypleasetheorchestratoroftheoriginaliPhone,SteveJobs.Inaddition,theremovalofthefront-panelbuttonwouldeliminatefalsepresses,refusalstoauthenticateduetodirtyfingersandtheassociatedsmudgesthatinevitablyresultfromunlockingthephone.

EventhoughApple’sglobalshareofthesmartphonemarketisabout15%,thecompany’sinfluenceoverthetechindustryismuchgreater.The3DsensorarrayoffersmanyinterestingpossibilitiesinconcertwithARKit,Apple’ssoftwaretoolkitforbuildingaugmented-realityappsfortheiPhoneandiPad.Althoughaugmented-realitytechnologyisheretoday,sofartherehasnotbeena“killerapp”thathasspurredwidespreadadoption.

Asnotedabove,Applewasnotthefirstcompanytodevelopfacialrecognitiontechnologyforconsumerapplications.InteldemonstrateditsRealSensetechnologyattheCEStradeshowin2016,withCEOBrianKrzanichparticipatinginademothataimedtoopenadoorlockusingfacialrecognitiontechnology.Thedemofailed—asdemosoftendo—toKrzanich’schagrin,butitshowedwhatwaspossiblewiththetechnology.Intelalsodemonstratedalaptopversionofacamerathatenableduserstologintoacomputerwithoutenteringapassword.Aftertheuserloggedin,thecomputer’ssoftwareprovidedallnecessarypasswords,withouttheuserhavingtomemorize(andforget…andreset)them.

AquickInternetsearchshowsavarietyofIntelRealSensewebcamsatpricesstartingat$50,butthesearemuchtoolargeandexpensivetobeintegratedintoasmartphone.Thus,atechnologicalleapinbothhardwareandsoftwarewasnecessary,andthelatestgenerationsofsmartphonesfromSamsung,LGandSonyoffervariouslevelsoffacialrecognitiontechnology.Android’sIceCreamSandwichsmartphoneoperatingsystemhasfacialrecognitionfunctionalitybuiltin.

Biometrictoolssuchasfingerprintandfacialrecognitionareopeningthedoortoanewphaseofdeviceusageandconsumerfriendliness.Consumerswillnolongerhavetomemorizeeasilyforgettablepasswordsandcodes,norwilltheyhavetopresstheirthumbtotheirphonetounlockit:theywillonlyhavetoholdthephoneinfrontoftheirface—nobuttonpushingneeded.3Dimagingarraysandbuilt-inaugmented-realitysoftwareputanenormousamountofcomputingandimagingpowerinthehandsofconsumers,andtech-savvyretailersarelikelytostartimagininghowtheycanusethesetechnologiestoempowerconsumersandmakeshoppinganeasierandmorepleasurableexperience.
