KID CONNECT is a time to welcome kids to eGroup with a fun activity to help them feel comfortable and guide them in connecting with the eGroup Leader and each other. KID CONNECT ENDS WHEN THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE BEGINS.

SLAPJACK

WHAT YOU NEED: Motion check-in sheet (1), playing cards (2 decks)

WHAT YOU DO: • Start by introducing yourself and welcoming kids to your eGroup.

As kids come in, write their names and tag numbers on the Motion check-in sheet.

• Ask them about their week and interests. Use the following questions to generate discussion:

What’s something cool that happened this week? Have you ________ (seen/eaten/listened to/read) any good _________ (movies/TV shows/food/music/books) lately? What are you looking forward to next week?

Once you have five to six kids begin playing Slapjack. • Seat kids in a circle. If you have more than six kids, split them into

two groups and use the extra deck of cards. Other kids can be added to either group as they come.

• Deal one deck of cards as evenly as possible among players. Stack any extra cards face up in the center of the group.

• Each player should stack their cards facedown in front of them. • Instruct one player to start the game by quickly turning the card

from the top of their stack over onto the pile in the middle. The next player will do the same. Play continues this way until someone turns over a Jack.

• When a Jack is turned over, players compete to be the first to slap the Jack to win the pile of cards. The winner places the pile of cards they won under the others in their stack.

• If more than one player slaps the Jack, the player whose hand is at the bottom wins.

• If a player incorrectly slaps the pile when no Jack was played, the player must give a facedown penalty card to the player who played the card.

• Players who have no more cards to play (or players joining them game after it has started) may try to slap their way back in.

• The person who collects all the cards wins. • Variations to try as time allows:

Players can slap an Ace to win all of the cards from another player of their choosing. Have each player "count" as he plays a card. The first player says "Ace," the next says "two," and so on up to "King." If the card played matches what the player said, then the first person to slap wins the pile. Make the object of the game to be first to get rid of their cards. The last player to slap the Jack must take all the cards from the pile.

GROUP CONNECTIn the GROUP CONNECT activity, kids will get to know each other and review the Motion rules. After this activity, GO TO LARGE GROUP.

MAIN POINT You can have confidence in

God’s strength.

BIBLE STORY Psalm 20:7

FOUR CORNER QUESTIONS

WHAT YOU NEED: no supplies

WHAT YOU SAY: “Welcome to eGroup! My name is _______ and I’m your eGroup leader! As an eGroup we will hang out together during Motion, hear stories from the Bible, learn what it means to live for Jesus, and play games! Before we go any farther, let’s get to know each other a little better.”

WHAT YOU DO: • Point out four corners of the eGroup space and number them one

through four. • Read the first question below, along with the four potential

answers for the question, and encourage kids to choose their answer by standing in the corner with the same number.

• Once all kids have chosen a corner, tell kids to introduce themselves to at least two other kids in the same corner.

• Repeat for the second question.

WHAT YOU SAY: “Let’s see who would choose the same answer as you!”

• “What makes you feel most confident?” Corner 1: Being surrounded by your friends Corner 2: Doing something you’re really good at Corner 3: Wearing your favorite clothes Corner 4: Hearing people say nice things about you

• “If you had to fight for your life against one of these creatures, which would you choose?”

Corner 1: A giant Corner 2: A lion Corner 3: A shark Corner 4: A dragon

WHAT YOU DO: Encourage kids to sit in a circle.

WHAT YOU SAY: “Before we head to Large Group, let’s review our three Motion rules:

1. Jump in! What can you do to help yourself stay engaged in the Motion experience? (participate in discussions, games, and activities; worship enthusiastically; have a great attitude)

2. Listen up! How can you show respect to others? (listen to and follow leaders’ directions, stay quiet when others are talking)

3. ACT out! ACT stands for Accept others, Choose kindness, and Take responsibility. How can your actions help others have a great experience?” (intentionally include everyone, use kind words, keeping my hands to myself, owning my actions)

GIANT STACK

WHAT YOU NEED: cups (1 per kid), Sharpies (10), stone sheets (set of 20)

WHAT YOU DO: • Give every kid a cup. Place the Sharpies where kids can reach

them. • Explain that while most of us will probably never face an actual

giant, we all have giants in our lives — things we’re afraid of. • Tell kids to use a marker to write something they’re afraid of on

the cup (or inside the cup if it’s personal). • Give kids three to four minutes to take turns using the Sharpies

to write their fears on their cups. • As they finish, encourage kids to work together to stack their

cups as high as they can to make a “giant.” • Read the stone sheets aloud.

eGroup Leader Note: There are 20 stone sheets, but only 10 unique stones. There are two copies of each stone since multiple kids may relate to the same strategy.

• As you read each one, place it on the floor. Spread the stone sheets across the center of the eGroup space so kids can see them all.

• Encourage each kid to choose one stone sheet that explains a way he/she can overcome the fear on their cup.

• Tell kids to crumple their stone sheets up. • On the count of three, tell kids to throw their “stones” at the

giant to knock it over!

WHAT YOU SAY: “With God’s help and with the help of Godly people in your life, you can defeat your giants. You can use things like God’s Word, worship, and support from your friends here in Motion to help overcome your fears. God’s strength can give you confidence!”

MAIN POINT You can have confidence in

God’s strength.

BIBLE STORY Psalm 20:7

DISCUSS how the main point applies to kids’ personal lives and spend time in PRAYER with your eGroup.

DISCUSSION AND PRAYER

WHAT YOU NEED: no supplies

WHAT YOU SAY: • “What’s something new you learned about the story of David and

Goliath today?” • “What are some things in your life that feel like giants — things

you feel powerless against?” • “David was confident in God because he had seen God help him

before. What are some times God has helped you overcome something that felt giant at the time? Does that give you confidence to face the giants in your life now? Why or why not?”

• “Psalm 20:7 says, ‘Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.’ Do you think you have confidence like that in God’s strength? What makes you say that?”

• “What are some ways you can start trusting God to help you get through life’s battles?”

SUGGESTED PRAYER: “God, thank You for giving us your strength when we face situations in our lives that make us feel afraid or powerless. Help us learn to have confidence in Your strength instead of trying to rely on our own. We love You! In Jesus’ name, amen.”
