    A Note from the Editor

If you are riding IS 2009, I trust that you will not be doing

what Im doing that is, not doing anything at all...yes, Im

hoping that you are on your bike cranking out mileage on

those trusty 2 HP (Human Powered) bone, tendon + muscle. I

will be attempting my first this year and I expect some serious

serving of pain. Dont be silly like me and either join the T+G

boys + girls as they grill in the Malaysian sun (dont worry, our

ozone layer is mostly still there) or go join the gym-kakis at

RPM classes. Either way...spin spin spin.

For the Muddies...well, theres a decent dosage of fun every

weekend, and from what I heard, the blast downhill via Loop

1 of Presidential 07, was superb with the right measurements

of everything, for the ground conditions. Just what the doctor

ordered, sigh...a prescription that I didnt get to fill this

weekend. Im already feeling the withdrawals and starting to

    twitch......

Next weekend sees more action as the roadies continue to

have their work cut out for them with another long ride, and

the Prez 09 recce crew continue to pour more sweat into the

ground. We are sure that our exploration for more ways to

ensure some sweet suffering will be in store for all. As thehash is on next weekend, our normal Sunday riders will be

    directed to Bandar Tasik Puteri.

    Until next week,

    Ed

    El Misty + Ghostly Hills...

The skies on last weekends ride to Lukut was misty

blue with puffy cotton clouds filtering out the heat, but

our riders felt the going hot. So this week, were

headed to cooler grounds. A bit less mileage before

ramping it up again. Nonetheless, it is not an easy ride.

We climb at Genting Peres, Sg Tekala & Bkt Hantu.

Option B is for people who need to get back early & yethave a nice workout.

Roads are in good nick & vehicular traffic is low off Jln

Ulu Langat. Careful of the fast down hills after Bkt

Hantu. Speeds past 70kmh have been recorded by non

    fei Chais.

The sugar cane drink as you enter Ulu Langat town is to

    die for.

    Date: 5 April 2009

Time: 7:30am (please be ready by 7:15am)

Start/End: Ulu Langat Community Centre (ULCC), Bt 14 Ulu Langat

    Option A: ULCC-Bt 18-G.Peres-U-turn of peak-Sg Tekala food court (refuel)-Bkt Hantu- ULCC (65km)

    Option B: ULCC-Bt 18-G.Peres-U-turn at peak-Bt 18-ULCC (54km).

How to get there: Take the Jln Cheras / Kajang highway. Take the first left after Batu 9 Cheras toll and make

another left at police station and head toward Hulu Langat, park at the Community Hall on yourleft. It is just after a football field.

Change positions correctly Slower moving traffic stays to the left; faster traffic to

the right. Never overtake on the left of the group!

Pass slower moving vehicles on the right; announceyour intention to do so

Announce hazards Most cyclists do not have a full view of the road while

    riding in a group

Announce potholes and other hazards so others canavoid them

Call out the hazard and point down to it, either left orright. No need to yell like a maniac tho.

Watch for traffic from the rear The last rider should frequently check for overtaking

    cars

Announce "car back" clearly and loudly It is also helpful to announce "car up" on narrow

roads or when riding two abreast

Watch out at intersections Leader should announce slowing or stopping at

    intersections, if necessary

Cyclists should not follow others throughintersections without first looking for themselves

Each cyclist is responsible for checking cross traffic; ifyou must stop, signal

Leave room for cars On narrow road or during climbs, leave space

between every three or four riders

Motorists will utilize the shorter passing intervals topass the group

Good relations with motorists is the responsibility ofevery cyclist. Remember, we share the roads with

others; its not our Grandfathers road.

Stop off road When stopping for mechanicals or regrouping, always

    move clear off the road

Always indicate you are stopping with your right handasking them to overtake you on the right.

Always yield to traffic in the roadway

The Unwritten (Now in print) Rules of Road Riding T + G

Practise Good Peloton Etiquette Everyone in the peloton has to contribute to the

workload. That means taking your fair share of pulls

at the front. Its ok to do shorter pulls, especially if

you are tired. Just do a token pull, indicate and pulloff to the right & back after youve established it is

    safe to do so.

When you go to the front, always keep a constant &steady speed. Do not accelerate or show how fast you

are. It is not a race, moron!

Typically everyone climbs at their own pace. So after aclimb, recover & regroup before setting off again.

Do not pull too long at the front. Always reserve someenergy

Ride single file It is illegal in some areas to ride more than two

    abreast. Avoid doing this.

In our country, the roads are narrow and winding. It isbetter to ride single filed in this case, unless it is safe

to ride a double pace line.

    NO RIDE

Was it just me or does it happen to everyone? It seems likeevery time when I wanna go riding on Sun, I will have problem going to

lala land the night before. Excitement? Cant be. Nervous is more like it.

Last night was no different. Due to some technical problem, I only get

to go to bed @ 12.15am. But I just cant seem to sleep till after 1.30am.

Very, very tempted to drop the idea of riding but I have given my words

to Clarence to work together. So, alarm is 5.15am. Barely 4 hours sleep

    for a hot ride. Sigh.

It was 6.15am; I was on Federal Hwy to Mega Mall to meet AC &

convoy. As I pulled to the side of the hwy to call AC, I heard some

honking and saw a BMW with 2 bikes up top. Ahasame gang. All for

124km to PD. Too bad, AC overslept again despite my 3 morning calls

and she doesnt know the way to Bangi from KL city Center. I know, I

know. I know what you are thinking. As I was driving along Seremban

Hwy, I cant help but amazed at the distance we go just for a Sun ride.

Serious disease and is infectious. Warning! Warning!

6.50am. There are already cars at the open car park next to UPM-

MTDC, preparing bikes & etc. A quick setup & a short briefing. We are

ready to roll. I need to do a last minute adjustment on my seat and I

ended up with the sweeper group which was cool coz safety is assured.

The start was pretty cool too. Imagine riding @ 24-

25kmhwoohoohooWell, good thing dun last long I guess.

After the 1st turn back point, the speed pick up a little but the worse

was the big arse killer rolling starts. We chased one hills after another,

trying to catch recovery as fast as possible at the top of at hill & get

back to work. Else we will miss the chance to use the downhill to work

on building momentum going up the next. I cant even remember how

many rolling hills were there. There brain is not there to count

anymore. It was about 38km of up down up down up down up

down Turning off @ 50km to Lukut, I guess the thing that keeps

the gang going was the refill at 61.3m.

20 min of regroup & refill and we are on the same road we came from.

Yes, back to big arse killer rolling, doing it all over again!!!! I know I

know. I know what you are thinking :) The only difference now is it was

early morning with cooling morning air just now. Now, its 10.20am,Papa Sun has woken up & started shining. I decided to go by my own

pace instead of catching train. Its no fun to burst your lungs & legs for

that. When you ride under the hot sun, weird things happen. I was

yearning so much for cold coconut water all the way. Giler betol.

101.3km, we got another chance for quick refill and YES, coconut!!

Clarence, Vincent, Me, Jeff and another 2 guys decided to stay for

coconut while the rest of the peloton moved on. I guess we took a good

10 minutes. Vincent seems to have bonk. Poor fella. He wanted more

time to recover. So, it was Jeff, Clarence & I hit the road together. Well,

rolling always separate the gang. After a short while when I glance

back, alamak! mana dua budak tu?Clarence was saying his thighs werefeeling very tight. Can cramp up at any time. I wanna wait & see just in

case he has trouble. But it is dayem hard to wait on a rolling portion as

you need to keep the pace as you climb, use the downhill momentum

for the next climb. As I hit the turn @ 92.9km. I still didnt see anyone

at the back. After about 3km, I decided to give Clarence a call. He didnt

pick up but I saw him from afar. Phew. If he is at the back, then where

is Jeff who was sandwich between us? Oppps...but neither of us has his

number. I guess Clarence was really tired so we maintained 25kmh &

below as there are still a wee bit of rolling still.

I guess Clarence got his 2nd wind after the De Palma Hotel climb &

rested. (Or whatever its name is) We managed better speed together

after that. I tummy started to growl before 115km. There I decided to

just suck gel instead of eat cliff coz its easier and I just wanna finish.

    Wakakakaa

The last 12km reminds me of 2007 IS 1st day last 10km. Butt pain, stiff

shoulders, neck paingosh. And I hate that dayem headwind!!!

At about 6km more, I saw another 2 cyclists in front. I picked up speed

a wee bit, hoping to suck behind them.. I only managed to close the gap

after 119.3km turn. Sorry Clarence, I thought you were still behind.

Oops. I guess I was too focused in getting back in one piece back to the

    car park.

I rolled into the car park @1.39pm. And yes, Jeff did have a little detour

but it was all good. He reach back about 10-15min after Clarence & I.

All in all - Dayem, I HATE THE BIG ARSE KILLER ROLLING HILLS

Tis the season (to be jolly burnt?) /The week that was (29 March 2009) T+G

Tis the season (to be jolly burnt?) by TeikAnd its that time of the year again, where everyone dustsoff their old bikes (or get new ones), the weekly mileage ramps up

above 100km and everyones pain threshold gets higher. Yup -

Interstate (IS) is just around the corner. But instead of gifts, PCC handsyou a pain fest in the form of circa 350kms and packaged in the form

of dont worry, youll enjoy the leisurely ride though Seremban to

    Melaka. Hah!

But I digress. The reason why I bring the IS into this is that Don (curse

him!!!) gleefully told us during last weeks ride that the route mirrors

the second day of IS. Now let me just say that I am missing IS this year,

and after last weeks route, I am a happy bunny because of it. As for

the rest of you unfortunate souls who have elected to pay for the

pleasure of inflicting 3 consecutive days of pain on yourself, you all are

certainly better men and women than I

In any case, the ride started out uneventfully with a rider getting

dressed down for trying to be a little too cute at the ride briefing -

probably the nerves. The peloton was fairly large, numbering in excess

of 40 by my estimate. Its clear everyone is putting in the mileage

before IS and its good to see that everyone knows that its better to

put the mileage in the bank now or else youll be paying dearly for it

    later. And although I

absolutely hate giving Don any credit for anything, it was a real nice

touch to include a route map along with tape to stick around the

handlebar which no one did for fear of looking like a dork.

So were rolling along uneventfully with the peloton a disciplined

group. Turned off at Salak Tinggi and were faced with lots of shaded

rollers as the miles added up. Have to admit that it was a really nice

    new route.

Before you knew it, we were sliding pass Lukut town and just into the

outskirts of Port Dickson. After the refueling (and I hear some even had

bah kut teh!), its the long trudge back to MTDC in the midday sun. TriMike, Samurai Masa-san and Tow Kay Tan flew off the front and left the

rest of us eating their dust for most of the way back. Meanwhile, the

peloton kept it tight on the way back with Vong doing the usual tough

lead-out duties. So most were back to MTDC at circa 1pm having

logged a long and hard 125kms on their bike computers, although I

hear a small number limped back closer to 2.30pm.

On a side note, an interesting observation that Kit mentioned to me is

that the PCC peloton is increasingly bling and I have to agree. There

must have been an equal number of carbon deep dish wheels and

look-at-me bikes around Boon Foo must be doing roaring business!

And for the rest of you who even care, I must say that my ride this time

around was uneventful compared to my last one and the new bike rode

like a dream definitely less road feedback than the Scott and a lot

more silky smooth but stiff when I stomped on it. Maybe its down to

the rims but I think its all just mental (No, Teik.its all about the

    bike!)

The Bitch Revisited by The Yellow MantaDate: 21-22 Mar 2009

Weather: Hot / Drizzly / Cloudy

    Ride distance: 21km

Trail condition: A bit wet, but ok

    Total riders: 23

With our nosey Ride Director not available last weekend, itdappear as if I might have to lead the ride, an old and slow rider.

Certainly not something that fast riders would relish. Just imagine

having to stop at every junction just to wait for the ride leader, er, I

mean the old man to catch up. Tsk tsk tsk. Not very good.

So I was so happy when both Teres and Danny answered my call for

assistance. But then again, both were not exactly all familiar with the

loops I intended to take i.e. reverse old loop 4 of the old Presidential,

down to Sg Pening Pening, up Bitch Hill and then down old loop 1 inreverse. This would give the riders a good workout and a couple of nice

descents, so I figured, if they didnt get all scattered all over the place in

the first place whilst I tried catching up as a ride leader

Fortunately our Kajang taiko James Lim turned up for the ride! Dude

knows the place like the back of his hand. Problem solved, he lead I

sweep (as usual). With Teres, Danny, Bulldozer and Alvina helping to

mark all critical turnings. No waiting for the old and slow.

The singletrack up loop 4 remains very much intact. But it was pretty

wet last weekend, especially the cemented sections and so I believe not

many managed to ride all the way up. At this point, a new rider on ared Jamis made the wise decision to turn back, after wasting a lot of

energy pedalling on the bigger rings when he couldnt get into his

granny. At the rate he was going, I was pretty certain he wouldnt make

    the whole ride

The steep descent down to the stream at the bottom of loop 4 remains

as treacherous as ever, more so in the wet. I dunno who rode the darn

thing as I was at the back all the time. I spied Simon climbing onto his

new Pivot at mid-point. Not sure if he made it all the way down or

carried his bike down like so many of us at the back

Bitch Hill remains very much the bitch that it is. Made worse by the fact

that the sun had started to shine in all its glory by the time we got to its

base. But the funny thing is the sun suddenly decided to hide itself

behind the clouds only after the last rider had struggled up to its peak.

In fact there was a light drizzle when we, after a good long rest, started

to ride again. God playing tricks on us? And so we had an overcast sky

    from then on. Nice.

After last Sunday, I sincerely believe the old loop 1 is meant for

descending, not climbing. The singletrack descent seems a lot more

narrower. Perhaps the bushes on either side have grown thicker and

encroaching overhead too. At some points I felt like I was barrelling

down a tunnel! The deep ruts are there but you could easily ride them

out. Just ride into each, relax and the bike will find its own way out.

On the rocky parts, again it was a matter of trusting your bike and

making sure you have enough momentum. Of course a full susp makes

things a lot easier. I was tailing Albert and looks like hes beginning to

get the hang of standing on the pedals and shifting his ass back. But of

course he still needs to get used to squeezing the front brakes too.

Relying purely on his rear brakes sent him sideways off the bike once

We made good time and all of us were back at the cars just after 12

noon for a quick bite. Amazing what or how much Choy can eat You

gotta see it to believe it!

    Weekly Newsletter 1 April 2009 / Issue Number: 434-13-2009

PEDAL TO CRANK Get to know your PCC Riders....

    1. When did you start riding and who got you involved?

I started riding about one and a half year's ago. Come to think of it, no one got me involved. I just

searched for a cycling club in malaysia and pcc popped out. Didnt dare to go for sunday rides at first,

    though.

    2. Why did you start riding?

Well, when i was a teenager, i'd always wanted to be fit and strong on the bike, but never got the chanceto do so... I guess I'm just trying to fulfill a childhood dream.

    3. Why do you continue to ride?

Cycling makes me feel fit and alive. It also makes me feel good about myself that I'm doing a good thing

to my body, keeping fit and filling my life with meaningful activities. Even more so now, coz I've made so

many friends in the cycling community. They're like my family now.

    4. What (or who) do you ride now ? (i.e MTB / Road or both). Give us the juicy details of your ride...

I ride mostly on the roadbike, and will go off-road on MTB once in a blue moon. I'm riding a specialized

tarmac sl2 with campagnolo record 10-speed gruppo. I have two wheelsets for my roadbike, a pair of

token T50 and a pair i built using dura-ace hubs, DT swiss spokes and mavic open pro rims. My MTB is a

GT arrowhead with shimano deore XT parts mixed with err..... forgot liao.... wheels.... err, forgot oso....

    5. What and why (is it) your favourite trail?

My fav place to ride is from my house in pandan perdana to batu 18 and back via ampang hill. It's my fav

route coz there are mixtures of different terrains and a nice coffee, kampung telur and roti bakar shop on

the way. It's also my fav coz i usually ride it alone in the mornings and it's a route where i can do some

    thinking and pondering on life.(hehehe)

    6. What type of rider would you consider yourself?

Err..... Good question...... Dunno the answer.... :p

    7. What is your dream bike?

There are two bikes which i would love to own. One is the

colnago EPS carbon frame and the other would be the Litespeed

Archon. For the time being, i'd like them fitted with a campagnolo

super record groupset and campagnolo bora ultra two wheelset.

    8. What is your favourite ride food (include drink)

Fav food before ride : high5 double creme blueberry and cream bread...... 60sen

Fav drink before ride(the night before) : guiness stout

Fav food during ride : see fav food before ride

Fav drink during ride : COKE

Fav food after ride : pan mee

Fav drink after ride : kopi ais satu pleeaaase!!!

    9. Do you fantasize about riding when you are not?

    100% YES!!!!

    10. Do you or did you sleep naked with your bike?

Hell Yeah. (Thats the first answer I didnt have to fake...Ed)

Vong Vong Vong Vong Vong...oh...too many..He is a immensely talented singer. A magician at sound engineering. Some even say he can tell your heart rate @ 92%

accuracy just by listening to your breathing. As far as I know, the one of the two in Malaysia who rides a Quickstep team

bike, the Specialized Tarmac SL2. A strong climber who never fails to take long pulls in the peloton. One of the regular PCC

Ride leaders who is ever friendly, ever willing to offer advice, and ever willing to push tired riders up the slopes.

Heres what we discovered about him:-
