WEEKLY NEWSLETTER - 7th May 2018 N°27
Dear Parent/Guardian
As we approach the summer months, please could I encourage students to apply sunblock on very hot days and wear a sun hat when outdoors. Students are permitted to drink water in the classroom on very hot days, fizzy or canned drinks are not permitted. Please could I encourage students to prepare well for their hydration levels and to refill their bottles during break and lunch time.
Attendance at school is very important. So that students are not disadvantaged in their learning or school experience, we ask all parents and carers to ensure their children achieve 100% attendance between now and the summer holidays. This is an important part of the school year: with many assessments taking place in the summer term. The majority of our parents recognise the importance of not missing lessons and therefore arrange family holidays during the school holiday periods. Please may I remind you that those students who take holidays in term time will not have their absence authorised, which will result in fines being issued.
Thank you for your continued support.
Yours faithfully
Mrs Helen Gilroy
Headteacher B.A.(Hons) P.G.C.E. NPQH

PiXL – Power to Perform
The exam season is upon us on once again and the Student Voice team have been trying out recipes designed to increase our students brain power.
Following last years culinary successes with trying out nutritious and tasty super snack foods, the team this year have been trying out a range of more
filling main meals.
The team cooked and tested a different twist on pizza with spinach and a baked egg, super spicy mexican chicken wraps, homemade fish finger
sandwiches and a delicious Mediterranean pasta bake. All of the recipes went down a storm, offered a range of challenge of cooking skills and the
testers got to try out some new flavours. They all agreed that good food was a recipe for success and that cooking their own healthy meals would
offer a welcome break in the revision timetable.
Why not follow these links to try the recipes that have been specially
created by the celebrity chef, Mark Lloyd.

COUNTY LINES EXPLOITATION
What is County Lines?
County Lines is the police term for urban gangs supplying drugs to suburban areas and market and coastal towns using dedicated mobile phone
lines or ‘deal lines’
It involves child criminal exploitation (CCE) as gangs use children and vulnerable people to move drugs and money.
County lines is a major, cross cutting issue involving drugs, violence, gangs, safeguarding, criminal and sexual exploitation, modern slavery and
missing people.
County lines activity and the associated violence, drug dealing and exploitation has a devastating impact on young people and their families.
Who does this affect?
Any child or young person. Children as young as 12 years old are being exploited by gangs to courier drugs out of their local areas. 15-16 years
is the most common age range
Any Vulnerable adult
Both males and females
White British children are being targeted because gangs perceive they are more likely to evade police detection
What are the warning signs?
Unexplained acquisition of money, clothes or mobile phones.
Excessive receipt of texts or phone calls
Relationships with controlling older individuals or gang association.
Significant changes in emotional well-being.
Suspicion of self-harm, physical assault or unexplained injuries.
How to respond
Where there are concerns that a child or young person may have been criminally exploited, speak with the Police or Speak in confidence with the
Designated Safeguarding team at school.

Congratulations to the Y7 netball team who are the U12 Wakefield Netball League Champions 2018 this week. They have had a very successful season winning their Pontefract and Castleford tournament back in March, coming runners up in the Wakefield District Tournament and finally being crowned league winners. This is a fantastic achievement for the girls in their first year at St Wilfrid’s and we hope it is something they will continue to build on over the next few years. Well done girls!
