The fifth grade science classes have been learning about the water cycle. Each student took a tour through the water cycle in a lab this week. Every student had to role dice and collect beads to track their travels through the different steps, like glaciers, oceans, clouds, and ground water. After spending 30 minutes traveling the water cycle, the students created a story to explain how a water droplet could travel along their route. In fifth grade the students have been discovering the meaning of the Rosary. They have been learning about the different Mysteries and how they can reflect on the Mysteries in their own lives. The classes practiced praying the Rosary and even created a Rosary to hang in the classroom!

Principal’s Corner

Second grade student, Donald Martin, had a unique opportunity this week to visit with the Cook County Commissioner. Donald's Great Grandmother (Rosa J. Martin) turned 100 years old on September 18th. Cook County Commissioner Deborah Sims (5th District) sponsored the resolution celebrating the 100th Year Birthday of Rosa Martin. Rosa Martin was one of the first students at Mississippi Valley State when the university was a 2 classroom trailer. Rosa Martin was born in 1915 in Carroll Mississippi, and moved to Chicago in 1957. Rosa Martin had 8 children and her second to youngest was Robert L. Martin Sr. (Donald's Grandfather who passed away in 1981).

Dear Parents, A few notes for this week…

Parent-Teacher Conferences: Please make sure that you have scheduled your parent-teacher conference by Monday, October 12. Any open time slots will be opened for any parents that are interested in meeting with additional teachers.

Aspire Test: This spring our students in grades 3-8 will take the Aspire test in place of the Terra Nova test. Our teachers will continue to participate in professional development to learn more about this assessment. Please take a moment to read more about the Aspire test from the Office of Catholic Schools.

Highlights from this week… Our kindergarten students had a great time this week learning about fire safety from our local heroes. Special thanks to Mr. Lakawitch and Mr. McGarry.

Chicago, Illinois 60690-1979

Dear Parents and Guardians, Historically Archdiocesan elementary students have taken the TerraNova test to measure student performance each year. The Archdiocese of Chicago has recently updated its curriculum standards to ensure alignment with national and college readiness standards and has realized that the TerraNova is not aligned to the new standards. As a result, beginning this academic year, students in grades three through eight will take the Aspire test, a standardized assessment that is aligned to the new curriculum standards. The Aspire test is a product produced by ACT. The ACT is the most widely administered college entrance exam in Illinois and is required for admissions to state universities. Students will complete tests in 5 key areas: English, math, reading, science and writing. The TerraNova test did not require students to produce an extended written response to a grade-level appropriate prompt and Archdiocesan educators are enthusiastic about having this important skill assessed. The Aspire test will be administered across the Archdiocese from April 11-15*. Students who receive testing accommodations will have additional time during the week of April 18-22 to complete their testing. More information will be coming to you from your school closer to the April test dates. A testing schedule for the Aspire will be established in late February 2016 and will be followed by all Archdiocesan schools. * Additionally, some schools have opted to administer periodic grade-level assessments created by ACT that are aligned with the summative Aspire test that will be given in April 2016. If your school has chosen this option, it will share information with parents and students about these assessments in a timely manner. Please note that the Aspire test is aligned to more rigorous curriculum standards that require students to respond to more complex questions. Thus, some students’ scores on the Aspire may not be consistent with their previous performance on the TerraNova. This is to be expected and not a cause for concern. Last year, grade eight students across the Archdiocese adjusted to the Aspire test with a high degree of success. Over the last three years, our schools have been modifying classroom instruction to engage students in more rigorous intellectual work. The new curriculum standards have informed these efforts and we are confident that Archdiocesan students will be prepared and will perform well on the Aspire tests. Aspire results will be used to provide insights into the effectiveness of instruction and student achievement. For more information on the Aspire test, please access the following link: http://www.discoveractaspire.org/ Thank you for your continued partnership in your child’s education. Sincerely,

Mary M. Kearney, Ed.D. Interim Superintendent

Build your family around the table

Why do Catholics give the Sign of Peace during Mass?

© Copyright 2015 Success Publishing & Media, LLC

Helping our children grow in their Catholic faith. October 2015

During the Mass, we offer the Sign of Peace after praying the Our Father, in preparation for Communion. In the Our Father, we ask God to “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.”

We offer the Sign of Peace in the confidence that if we forgive

our neighbors, God will forgive our sins. Since we share the Peace of

Christ with each other, the Sign of Peace can also

be a sign of spiritual unity.

Did you know that we can help our children become more successful, better socialized and more secure in just 45 minutes a day, four days a week? Studies show that gathering for four family meals every week can build a stronger family plus higher achievement and self-esteem in children. Unplug. Set a schedule and stick to it. Turn off the TV and all mobile devices. Send the message that family comes first. The company matters more than the menu. Time is often an obstacle to family dinners so consider making a pot of soup or a double casserole over the weekend and freeze some for weekday dinners. Then you are free to

focus on children instead of meal preparation. Celebrate the liturgical seasons. Mark the changes in the year, celebrate the lives of the saints,

observe devotions – family meals are opportune times to pass on

our faith. Discuss, talk,

chat. Studies indicate that family dinner conversation helps to boost vocabulary and

teach values.Build traditions that strengthen family identity and stability. Friday pizza night, lighting candles during Advent, an indoor picnic at the first snowfall – the tradition doesn’t matter as long as it is consistent. Gathering regularly around a family table reinforces the idea that we don’t merely exist for ourselves – we are all members of a greater Body.

St. Teresa of Avila Born in 1515, Teresa joined the Carmelites—against her family’s wishes—in 1534. Soon after this, she became sick for so long, that the sisters dug her grave. Teresa recovered and wrote a book based on her suffering called, The Interior Castle. In 1563, she founded a reformed order whose nuns wore rough brown habits and sandals instead of shoes. St. Teresa founded more than 17 convents of Discalced Carmelites and helped reform the Carmelite friars.

Raise peacemakers Followers of Jesus want to spread his peace throughout the world. The most important peacemaking skills we can teach to children are repentance, confession, and forgiveness. When we raise children to take responsibility for their actions, express sorrow for hurting others, and commit themselves to forgiveness, we teach them to become true peacemakers.

The Golden Rule “So whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them” (Luke 6:31).

ISAIAH 53:10 – 11PSALM 33:4 – 5, 18 – 19, 20, 22

MARK 10:35 – 45 OR 10:42 – 45HEBREWS 4:14 – 16

ReflectionIn the beginning of the movie Captain America, Steve Rogers is a loser. Rejected again and again by army recruiters, Rogers perseveres. In the eyes of the world, he’s not soldier material. Then a director of a secret experimental “super soldier” project witnesses Rogers interacting with others and signs him up. Rogers looks even more like a loser next to these super soldier recruits until something happens after a group exercise. The drill ser-geant throws a dummy grenade on the ground, and while everyone else ducks for cover, Rogers immediately throws himself on top of the grenade. Test over! The true thing that makes a soldier “super” comes from the inside, not the outside. The Messiah is proven to be real in the same way. Jesus’ power isn’t the kind that makes other people run for cover; it is a self-giving love that comes from the inside. He doesn’t come to control or to impress people; he comes to serve. In the readings today, the one who suffers with and for the sake of his people is the holy one. The one who shares power, wisdom, and blessing is a Messiah worth following!

ActionLive heroically. Before you say one negative thing, say five positive things. This will do wonders at home! Do this with a family member or a friend so you can share and break open the experience. Don’t make a list of someone’s faults or shortcomings. Instead, make a list of their gifts and talents. Then tell them what you appreciate about them. When someone says or does something hurtful to you, don’t retaliate. Surprise them by being patient with them. Ask if there’s anything they need from you.

Journaling QuestioNS Some say the best defense is a better offense. What do you think that means? When have you seen people in authority fail in their use of power? When have you seen power and authority used to lift others up, rather than push them down?

In what ways have you taken your gifts for granted?
