Community Church DinnerBURNT HILLS – The Burnt Hills United Methodist Church, 816 Route 50 will host a dinner on Saturday, June 18 from 4:30-7pm. Choose either Baked Ham or Roast Turkey with a tossed green salad, potato salad, rolls & butter, and homemade pie or cake. Choice of hot and cold beverages will be avail-able. It looks as though we’re fi nally going to be able to get outside and enjoy some real summer-like weather. After the cool, damp May we had, this weekend will be a pleasure. It will be a good time to wrap up any last minute planting of annual fl owers. Our containers that we plant for the patio area are the last on our list and I’m sure my wife Sharon will have fun with that while I, yet again, mow the lawn. After that, we can enjoy the colorful results and relax a little bit. No doubt, there will be a shrub or perennial that will follow one or the other of us home and need to fi nd a place in our gardens but, the “heavy lifting” of the planting season is behind us. This is a time to cherish with the greater part of the growing season still to come. We’ll get to watch all the changes we made to the perennial beds last fall come to fruition and we’ll know if we made the right choices then. We’ve done our part and now the plants have their turn to work their magic. Gardeners have a lot to look forward to right now.
Of course, with warmer days comes the annual crop of buggy pests. It’s frustrating to watch plants we’ve struggled so hard to get going (especially this year) get attacked by insects or suffer from fungal diseases. After all the effort we put in, few can simply shrug and walk away. Most of us are going to “do something about it”. The fi rst stop is usually at the garden shop. Standing there among all those sprays and dusts, it dawns on you that you really have no idea what you need. All you know is that you want to be rid of those #!@+#!@ bugs that are chewing up your roses or beans. Adding to your dilemma is a desire to consider the effect of your actions on the environment. While this attitude is admirable, it doesn’t help you with your current problem. I can’t be there to help you pick out the product you need but I can give you an overview of what’s out there.
I like to break down insecticides into three categories: contact killers, in-gested killers and systemic insecticides. The contact killer and ingested killer catego-ries contain both chemical and organic products. So far, all systemic insecticides are chemical based.
Contact killers are substances that kill any insect they come into contact with at the time they’re sprayed. Insects that re-infest the plant after the spray has evaporated will not be affected. Malathion is a well-known contact killer that has been in use for many years. Insecticidal soap, horticultural oil and pythrethrin are all examples of non-chemical and organic contact killers. At this point, I’d like to emphasize that, just because an insecticide is non-chemical or organic doesn’t neces-sarily mean that it’s harmless to you or wildlife in your yard. You will fi nd virtually the same warnings on chemical and non-chemical insecticides. Pyrethrin, an organic insecticide that’s been around for years, is a very powerful agent that acts on the nervous system of insects and should be used with caution. My use of pyrethrin has fallen off with the introduction of insecticidal soap sprays. I fi nd insecticidal soaps to be quite effective against soft bodied insects like aphids. When I am confronted with hard-bodied insects like scale, I’ll turn to the horticultural oil sprays. These oil sprays coat the insects. Since insects breathe through holes in their abdomens, the light oils do a nice job suffocating them. For many years, heavier dormant oils sprays were used in orchards to smother insect eggs before they hatched. These dormant oil sprays were too thick to use on actively growing plants since they would smother the leaves as well. The new horticultural oils are much lighter and won’t harm the plant but WILL smother the insects. I see the bottom of the page looming so let me just say this before I go. When you have an insect or other problem with a plant, bring a sample of the insect or damage to the garden center with you (sealed in a baggie of course). This will avoid guesswork. This is an involved and complex topic so I’ll continue next week. Thanks for the read.

Father’s Day is a day to spend with Dad and show your ap-preciation for all he’s done over the years. Many families prefer to tailor the day around whatever it is Dad likes to do the most. Rick Werblow has always loved music. After receiving his BA degree in music at Syracuse University, he spent more than thirteen years on the road performing as a full time musician. His talents include guitar, bass guitar, harmonica and piano. Rick earned his living entertaining at the ski resorts of Killington, VT to the Olympics in Lake Placid in the winter, and playing through the towns of Lake George, Albany and New York City in the summer. After the many years of traveling, Rick was ready to settle down and plant his roots. Rick worked at a local Hilton Music Store where he learned the ropes of the music business and shared his musical knowledge and talents with students there. He continued his musical performances on weekends. Then after four years, Rick had the opportunity to open his own music store. Rick opened Burnt Hills Music in June of 1991 and at the current location at 772 Route 50 (Dollar General Plaza), the store is now one of the leading suppliers of music band instruments in the area! A staff of ten talented musicians teaches up to 200 students a week on piano, drums, brass winds, woodwinds, strings and more. Library Pass Program ExpandsSCHENECTADY – The Schenectady County Public Library has added fi ve new museums to its Library Pass program - Ben-nington Museum, The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book His-tory, Norman Rockwell Museum, Hancock Shaker Village, and The Old Stone Fort at Schoharie. The Library Pass Program is a partnership between the public library and area museums and cultural venues. Library patrons can sign out a pass – just like a book – to visit participating locations.
