Cole’s Collision to Sponsor Car ShowBALLSTON SPA – Cole’s Collision will be sponsoring the 9th Annual “The Way We Were Car Show” on Sunday, October 9, in downtown Ballston Spa. Hosting the event, The Ballston Spa Business and Professional Association has been putting on the car show for the past nine years. Cole’s Collision has registered two of their cars for enthusiasts to view and they will also be setting up two vendor tables giving away promotional prizes to spectators. Why plant bulbs?Planting bulbs in fall gives us a chance to thumb our noses at winter. It is an act of faith. By planting

these bulbs, we are saying, “I know that the next season will arrive a little brighter and better.” You may be planting fl ower bulbs, but you are really sowing Nature’s promise that the dark days of winter will eventually pass. These small bulbs are a miracle in themselves. Think of them as rechargeable batteries. They don’t store electricity but “growth energy”. When you buy bulbs, they’re all “charged up” for you by the producer in Holland. Bulbs produced in Holland are still the best available. The Dutch have been active in bulb culture since the 1500s so they’ve had a lot of practice.Read the packages

Now let’s take a look at some of the information on the packages the bulbs come in. To plan out your bulb planting you’ll need to know some important details. When does it fl ower?

On each package you’ll see fl owering times as “early spring, mid spring, late spring and early summer”.That seems pretty general and it is. The bulb company doesn’t know whether you live in Virginia or Upstate New York so they have to be vague. It is up to us to know our season and interpret what “early spring” means for instance. Here’s how I interpret these fl ower times at my house.Early Spring – late March through mid AprilMid Spring – mid April through mid MayLate Spring – late April through late MayEarly Summer –late May through June In general the early fl owering bulbs are shorter than the later fl owering blooms. The larger size of the late bloomers means they’ll take longer to form than the smaller early bloomers.

Bear in mind that I live at an elevation of 750’ and spring comes a little later there than down in ‘The Valley” as we call it. Most of the Capital District is a week or so ahead of my house. As you watch your bulbs’ progress in spring you’ll be able to refi ne you expectations. Of course a warm spring will cause your bulbs to fl ower earlier and a cool one will hold them back a bit so you’ll have to go with the fl ow. How tall does it get?

The next bit of information you’ll need is the height of the fl ower. This will help you avoid putting taller plants in front of shorter ones that fl ower at the same time. Of course if you plant bulbs with shorter stems that bloom in early spring you could get away with taller ones that fl ower in late spring or early summer in front of or even among the early bloomers. By the time the late fl owering varieties blossom, the early bloomers will have long since fi nished their fl owering cycle. This information is also handy when mixing bulbs into established perennial fl owerbeds.

Are you getting the idea of how handy the information on bulb packaging can be?You’ll also fi nd the light requirement on the package although most of them will do best in full sun (6 or

more hours of direct sun a day) but some can tolerate partial shade. Most folks are overly optimistic when judging how sunny a location is so try to be realistic.

Another bit of information included is whether the variety is deer resistant. For those of us in rural locations, this is the most important thing we need to know. Even suburban gardeners seem to be getting visits from hungry deer. Picking out your bulbs

It is always best to seek out the highest quality bulbs. At Hewitt’s we sell top quality bulbs form the Netherland Bulb Company. They are large size bulbs grown in Holland. The Dutch have been producing fl owerbulbs since the 1500s so they have a wealth of experience. Their soil is also rich and well drained so it is no wonder that the quality of their bulbs is unsurpassed by anyone, anywhere.

I’d be very wary of ordering bulbs through the mail. You have a real advantage when you shop for bulbs in person. Inspect the bulbs you’re interested in to make sure they are plump and fi rm. In the rare event you fi nd any bulbs that seem soft or, worse yet mushy, make sure to point that out to the store manager. It is alright if the dry, papery outer skin of the bulb is fl aking off. That is perfectly normal and won’t affect the growth of the bulb. When given a choice, choose the larger bulbs from a group. A bigger bulb is closer to becoming two bulbs so there is an advantage to being picky.Preparing the planting area

Make sure that the area you wish to plant is sunny and well drained. Well-drained means that the area dries rapidly enough after rain to avoid standing water. Build up the soil where you are planting your bulbs. In very sandy soil the addition of compost, peat humus or peat moss will help retain a bit of moisture. Don’t forget the Bone Meal!

The most important soil additive for bulbs is bone meal. I use bone meal when I plant any shrub, tree, rose, perennial plant and especially fl owerbulbs. The phosphorus in bone meal is vital in restoring and expanding the bulbs after the fl owering period. You need to mix bone meal into the soil BELOW the bulb so the roots grow down through it. Bone meal doesn’t dissolve like chemical fertilizer so your only chance to use it is when you’re planting. The phosphorus in bone meal lasts 4 or 5 years. By then, with proper feeding and care, the bulbs will need to be divided and replanted with more bone meal. After you plant your bulbs, be sure to water them in right away. This initial soaking let’s them know that they are in the ground and it’s time to grow some roots. They start growing roots right away and they’ll gain a little extra energy for the spring fl owering cycle. More important, those roots will help anchor the bulbs in the soil so frost over winter won’t heave them upward. To be continued next week…thanks for the read.
