REFLECTION

Today we celebrate the life of Mary Magdalene. She was the first to see the risen Jesus and became the first evangelist. As the one who not only spoke to the angels at the tomb, but also to the risen Son, she became the apostle to the apostles and, in response to Jesus’ call, told them of his resurrection and his forthcoming ascension. Like her we, too, are called to witness to the truth of the resurrection and the power of the risen and ascended Christ.

COLLECT OF THE DAY

Almighty God, whose Son called Mary Magdalene to be a witness of his resurrection: mercifully grant that by your grace we may be forgiven and healed, and may know you in the power of your Son’s risen life; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

FIRST READING

A reading from the Song of Solomon 3: 1–4a

Upon my bed at night I sought him whom my soul loves; I sought him, but found him not; I called him, but he gave no answer. ‘I will rise now and go about the city, in the streets and in the squares; I will seek him whom my soul loves.’ I sought him, but found him not. The sentinels found me, as they went about in the city. ‘Have you seen him whom my soul loves?’ Scarcely had I passed them, when I found him whom my soul loves.

A short silence is observed.

Reader For the Word of the Lord, All Thanks be to God.

PSALM 63

At the 7:45am Eucharist the Psalm is recited antiphonally, a long pause being observed at the colon. At the 9:00am Eucharist the following antiphon and setting of the Psalm is used. At the 11:00am Eucharist a Book of Common Prayer setting of the Psalm is sung by the Choir.

O God, you are my God: eagerly will I seek you. My soul thirsts for you, my flesh longs for you: as a dry and thirsty land where no water is. So it was when I beheld you in the sanctuary: and saw your power and your glory. For your unchanging goodness is better than life: therefore my lips shall praise you. And so I will bless you as long as I live: and in your name will I lift my hands on high. My longing shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness: my mouth shall praise you with exultant lips. When I remember you upon my bed: when I meditate upon you in the night watches, How you have been my helper: then I sing for joy in the shadow of your wings, Then my soul clings to you: and your right hand upholds me. Those that seek my life are marked for destruction: they shall go down to the deep places of the earth. They shall be delivered to the sword: they shall be a portion for jackals. The king will rejoice in God, and all who take oaths on his name shall glory: but the mouths of liars shall be stopped. Response

SECOND READING

A reading from the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians 5: 14–21

For the love of Christ urges us on, because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died. And he died for all, so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised for them.

From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

A short silence is observed.

GOSPEL READING JOHN 20: 1–18

Deacon A reading from the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St John. All Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, ‘They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.’ Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went towards the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes.

But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping?’ She said to them, ‘They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.’ When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping? For whom are you looking?’ Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, ‘Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ She turned and said to him in Hebrew, ‘Rabbouni!’ (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, ‘Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.”’ Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord’; and she told them that he had said these things to her.

COMMUNION

Baptised Christians from all traditions are welcome to receive Communion. All others are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing. Please move to the altar rail.

You are advised to take any valuables with you to Communion to ensure their security.

We also request that people not use the practice of ‘intinction’ at Communion (the practice of dipping the consecrated bread into the consecrated wine) as it increases the possibility of transmitting infection. If you are concerned about use of the common cup, it is acceptable for you to receive Communion in one kind (i.e. the bread only). Gluten-free wafers are available upon request.

Where charity and love are, there is God. The love of Christ has brought us together into one. Let us rejoice and let us be glad in that love itself. Let us fear and love the living God. And let us love from a pure heart. Amen.

THE FLOWERS IN THE CHURCH TODAY

are in loving memory of Norma Cowper and her parents, Alma and Jack Lynas.

May they rest in peace, and rise with Christ in glory.

Magdalen, cease from sobs and sighs; wipe the teardrops from off thine eyes: Simon the leper's feast is o'er; Christ today needs thy nard no more. Now thousand times may’st thou rejoice; now thousand times uplift thy voice. Alleluia.

Magdalen, bind upon thee now garland of gladness o'er thy brow: banished afar is grief and pain: welcome is sunshine after rain. For Jesu Christ the world hath freed, triumphing over death indeed. Alleluia.

However following great successes in previous years we would like to again collect and distribute socks, beanies and gloves. For the reasons mentioned above the clothing will have to be new & in their original packing. It would not really matter what type of sock but would be very much appreciated by our guests who are in the main males. There may even be a new pair lurking in your draw which will be opened one day! Similarly do you have a new beanie or a pair of new gloves to
