LADIES’ DAY on October 5. Thanks to Cathy Atchison for planning this.
M
ost people don’t understand thing. To many
Chrisans it seems like some sort of country club
due. Another bill in the long list of monthly expenses.
Giving is supposed to be an act of worship that draws
you closer to the heart of God. Then why is it that the
concept of thing, giving the rst 10% of one’s income,
has become so divisive in the church? Chrisans debate
quesons like: Is thing sll even required? Wasn ’t it an
Old Testament law? Didn’t Christ abolish the law with His
death and resurrecon? Should I the o the gross or net
of my income? Does God really expect me to the if I’m
struggling in my personal nances? I “the” my TIME to
the church. Isn’t that enough?
These quesons all have the same recurring theme—
what’s the LEAST I can give and sll receive God ’s bless-
ings. When you debate these quesons, you totally miss
the point. Bibli cal generosity isn’t about giving the mini-
mum. It’s about surrendering it all to an all-powerful, all-
loving God. And to a God who GAVE everything in His Son
Jesus Christ. Randy Alcorn said it best: “Giving arms
Christ’s lordship. It dethrones ME and exalts HIM.”
I used to write checks to my church that looked like
this $112.14. To the penny. Nothing more. Noth ing less.
“There’s my 10% God. Hopefull y that’s cover the upkeep
in Heaven unl my next paycheck. Now bless ME.”
W hy I Quit Tithing
and W hy Y ou Should T oo by Larry Poole

trust Him with my nances, the more He can u
reveal His glory. The more I get to be a condu
miracles. The more my faith gets to be tested
And that’s why I quit thing.
Don’t hear me wrong. I sll give the rst
income to God through my local church. I thin
great starng point. But I’ve started asking a
queson. A queson that’s radically changing
no longer, “How much should I give?” Instead
ed asking, “How much should I KEEP?”
And I’m no dierent from you. I ’m an ave
I’m not a millionaire. I’m not expecng a wind
from a rich relave any me in the future. I ju
that my God is sucient to meet and EXCEED
needs.
I believe God when He says, “Test me in t
if I will not throw open the oodgates of heav
out so much blessing that there will not be roo
to store it” (Malachi 3.10).
Is it possible that you’re liming God withing? Maybe you’re obedient with the rst 10%
pletely unwilling when the Holy Spirit prompts
ther. Perhaps God is calling you to do more
than you’ve ever done before.
Instead of being comfortable, maybe it ’s
to give in a way that ’s going to require faith A
probably won’t be easy. But it will be worth it
doesn’t just want your rst 10%. He wants yo
heart.
Honor the Lord with your wealthand with the best part of everything
you produce. Then He will fill your barns with grain and your vats will overflow with good wine.
