Sunday, May 1, Women's Story Circle with Patti Shannon after 10:30 am Services

Most of us know Patti Shannon as the devoted mother of Cassie and Goeff and loving wife of Greg, but there's far more to her than that. While the personal challenges she has faced are hers alone, we will all be able to relate to the ways she has dealt with them and be inspired by the lessons she has learned. On Sunday, May 1 after the 10:30 service, this strong, wise woman of deep faith will share her spiritual story. We hope you will join us!

As always, a light lunch will be served ($7 suggested donation), and childcare will be available by advance arrangement with Susan Goodman. All women of St. Matthew's and their female guests are invited, but to ensure enough food for everyone and proper room setup, reservations are necessary. Please call or email Margaret or Mickie in the church office at 512-345-8314 or [email protected] to reserve your spot. Submitted by Janice Watkins

Registration for Men's Annual Retreat, June 3-6, 2016 “The Kingdom of God is within You … The Kingdom of God is among You” All men of the parish are invited to attend the 2016 Men's Retreat, June 3-5, 2016, at the Well Spring Retreat Center, near Blanco, TX. Enjoy good fellowship and good food with the men of St. Matthew’s. Travis Helms will lead the Retreat Program on “Living Into the Parables of the Kingdom.” Jesus’ parables concerning the kingdom of God are some of the most intriguing in all the Gospels. Variously described as yeast, a mustard seed, hidden treasure, a merchant searching for pearls, etc., what did the kingdom mean to Jesus; and what do his parables have to tell us about the Christian life today? Travis will take us through a close study of the texts to help uncover the deeper meaning be-hind the parables of the kingdom, and its significance for our lives and work. Visit the Registration Table before or after Sunday 10:30 Services in May for information and registration, or access the Retreat Registration Brochure at http://s3.amazonaws.com/dfc_attachments/public/documents/3221846/St__Matthews_Mens_Retreat_Brochure_2016_v2.pdf. Remembrances Memorial Wall—Discounted Tiles Still Available!

In November 2015, the Vestry approved a proposal from the Memorial Garden Committee (MGC) to build a Remembranc-es Memorial Wall adjacent to the Common Urn slab. The wall provide spaces to mount 4”x8” and 8”x8” etched and fired clay tiles memorializing a person you wish remembered.

The 4x8 tiles allow two lines of text while 8x8 tiles allow four lines of text. Additionally, a line with the relevant dates is etched at the bottom of each tile. During this introductory period, the 4x8 tiles cost $150—a $100 discount—and the 8x8s cost $400 with the $100 discount.

For the near future, the MGC will have a table in the Commons to answer questions and sell tiles. Please contact Larry Richards, MGC Chair, at [email protected] for more information. Submitted by Larry Richards

Volunteering for Caritas

Last week we wrote about the need for St. Matt’s volunteers:

To work at the Caritas North Pantry (to volunteer please contact Laura De Grush, Caritas’ Direct Service Volunteer Coordinator, at 512-646-1283 or [email protected]) and

To bring an item or more with you to Church each Sunday to help stock the food pantries. This week’s main needs are for: canned ham, fruit cocktail and pineapple; cold cereals; hamburger helper-type meals, and dried pasta. The pantries could also use: shaving cream, tooth paste and tooth brushes. Caritas collection baskets can be found in the Sanctuary Commons and in Huffman Hall.

This week we’re in the Kitchen, seeking extra volunteers for the St. Matt’s Cooking for Caritas team, which prepares freshly cooked meals for 200 Caritas clients once a month. The third Sunday of every month after the 10:30am service, the team prepares the meals in Huffman Hall’s kitchen. The only requirement is that you will need to obtain a food handlers certifi-cate, which is an easy to do on-line test. To learn more and to volunteer please e-mail Frank Lynn at [email protected]. Submitted by Jane Baxter Lynn

Kitchen News! More and more parishioners are using the kitchen and this is good news! The unfortunate news is that we don’t know exactly who. Beginning next week, we will be putting up a “Check – In” sheet outside the kitchen doors for each group to list their name and times of arrival and departure. We encourage groups to use the kitchen for helping with church functions and missions, but it is important for us to know who so we can facilitate training and orientation. In May, Chef Robert will be scheduling courses to help everyone become expert in using this wonderful facility. Submitted by Chris Schumacher

St. Matt’s Summer Calendar Does your group have a regularly scheduled time to meet at St. Matt’s? If so, and you will not meet during all or portions of the Summer months, please email me at [email protected] or call the church office at 512-345-8314 to update your schedule. Your last date to meet for the summer and projected first date back in the fall are needed. This helps to free up space for other requested events and also to properly schedule air conditioning and staff resources. Submitted by Mickie Dunn

The request is for a 4 hour shift each week. Volunteers serve in both clini-cal and non-clinical areas, and even on a golf cart too! There are plenty of ways to share your kind spirit or generous heart in the service of others at Seton Northwest! Men's Service Ministries & Bishop Curry—April 2016 A recent issue of the St. Andrew's Cross, the Brotherhood of St. Andrew's national newsletter, consolidated a list of service ministries from across its chapters. The foundation of these service ministries are based on Matthew 25:40: “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Examples of Chapter service ministries include:

Feed the poor.

Gather clothes for those in need.

Service projects that help build ramps for the handicapped, repair homes of the widowed, de-muck houses after floods, and remove debris left by hurricane and floods.

Sponsor scout troops, our veterans, and our youth programs.

Visit those who are sick, suffering the disease of alcoholism, and incarcerated in prison. To paraphrase Presiding Bishop Michael Curry's April 2016 speech to the Brotherhood, “Don’t grow weary, Brothers, your core mission is the same as the core mission of the church.” (For a video of Bishop Curry's dynamic speech, see below link.) St Matthew’s men, sponsored by our Chapter of the Brotherhood of St Andrew, have participated in a number of the above service examples. If you have a particular project or ministry that you would like St. Matthew’s men to pursue, then please contact our Chapter's officers: Tony Hatheway, Don Neely, Bruce Newman, or George Worrell. St. Matthew’s Endowment Committee Gifts

The St. Matthew’s Endowment Committee thanks those members of our parish and our community who have given to the St. Matthew’s Permanent Endowment in the last quarter. Gifts can be given to the Endowment in honor of a friend, in memory of a loved one who has passed away, in celebration of a birth/birthday or in recognition of any significant accom-plishment or sacrament. Endowment funds support existing parish related ministries as well as provide opportunities to

grow new ministries at St. Matthew's. At this time, we recognize gifts given:

To remember: Marjorie Bounds, Mary “Lakki” Brown, Cyril Durrenberger, Irene Goodenough, Phil Hatlen, Sallie Helms, and Pat Smith.

To celebrate: Sara Jane Goode, James & Paul Schleicher, and Rev. Jim Williams

Grants Approve by Permanent Endowment Fund

The Vestry recently approved the following three grants for funds from the Permanent Endowment Fund.

Soul of a Musician Series Christmas Show Sponsorship – $1,500 to cover expenses for this major event in the Soul of Musician series, which is now in its 4th year. This important ministry has reached people outside the walls of the church and is a welcoming ministry for St. Matthew’s.

Helping Our Neighbor (HON) – $1,000 to provide funding, in collaboration with two local businesses, for free showers and haircuts for people who are homeless in northwest Austin.

Gallery Wall Exhibit – $777.38 to cover the costs of installing permanent display tracks in the basement and in the former library. This equipment will display of art works produced by the Art Group at the Senior Activity Center and also announcements of events held by the Youth Group, Sunday School, or other groups. Installation of these tracks will improve both communication of events and aesthetics of the spaces where they are installed.

Perhaps you have an idea for using your time and talent to make a dream come true for St. Matthews. The Endowment com-mittee reviews grants at its regular Monday evening meetings throughout the year. A grant application can be submitted at any time. To apply for a grant fill out the grant application form. This can be found online at the following URL: http://www.stmattsaustin.org/About/endowment-fund.html On that page is a link to the grant application form. Submit the application to the Endowment Committee. Submitted by Dineen Majcher

Note from Your Treasurer

The Vestry received the quarterly report (January-March 2016) at its regular meeting on April 26. Here’s a summary for your reading enjoyment.

Revenue Income St. Matthew’s members sent contributions on pledges in the amount of $314,000. This amount is 33% of the total pledged for 2016. The percentage is higher than you might expect for 25% of the year (3 months) because this quar-terly total includes 11% of the annual total that was contributed in advance in 2015 for 2016 pledges.

Expenditures For these first three months: (1) $181,000 for compensation and benefits of clergy and staff, (2) $33,000 to the Episcopal Diocese of Texas for St. Matthew’s share of EDOT offices and mission, and (3) $78,000 for all other admin-istration and program costs.

In the Bank As of March 31, 2016, St. Matthew’s had $176,000 cash in the bank for everyday operations—compensation, EDOT, administration, and programs. In accordance with the budget plan presented to the annual meeting in January, the Vestry expects to spend this balance down to $5,000 by the end of November 2016.

Details? If you want the complete report of excruciating details, send me an email request and I will respond and attach the one-page report. Submitted by Treasurer Jack Robertson, [email protected].

Family Communion Training Episcopal Church in a Nutshell!

Family Ministry will be hosting Family Communion Training and Episcopal Church in a Nutshell! on Wednesday, May 11, from 5:00 – 7:00 pm in B-21. Children and parents are invited to this opportunity. This will be an introductory program for children and adults to discover the many aspects of communion and what it means to be Episcopalian. Children are always welcome at the communion rail; however, the parent usually decides when a child is ready to begin to receive com-munion. A child can certainly participate in communion without being a graduate of the Communion Class; however, there comes a time when a child is ready for more formal communion instruction. Participating in this class will help your child learn the meaning of Communion. All are welcome at the altar. You will have the opportunity to discover answers to your Eucharistic questions. The adult portion of this training (Episcopal Church in a Nutshell!) will go over the many aspects of our Episcopal faith and give adults some Q & A time with clergy.

If your child is between the ages of 5 and 12, has been baptized, not yet attended a Communion Class, and is asking ques-tions about what it means, please sign them up for this training. Please contact Susan Goodman at [email protected] for more information or to register your child. Heavy snacks will be served at the training. Submitted by Susan Goodman
