Best Day of My Life Prize Draw Winners

I Trained with my dad

Why I TRY?

Today I participated in the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon. We had to wait for a very long time before we could start. When my turn came, my tummy was doing back flips! I jumped into the pool and I went deep down. I quickly came back up and realised how cold the water was. I frantically swam away. I grabbed a noodle and it helped me float a bit better. My friend Kiara suddenly grabbed the other end of my noodle. Together,

we swam to the end. I ran to my bike, my feet were hurting on the ground, but I didn’t care. I took my bike off the metal pole, got changed and pushed my bike to the start. I climbed on and pedalled off. I was going downhill and I was scared that I would fall off my bike, but I didn’t. I finished the ride and place my bike back on the rack. I started running. I ran and ran. When I was half way my tummy started to ache. I went a bit slower and when I was ready I ran faster. I crossed the finish line a few moments later and that was the best day of my life.

What I did to train for the TRYathlon, was getting up early most mornings and go for a 3km ride, then run for 1km and finish with another 3km ride. I went to the coast, during summer, so I did a lot of swimming and I also did laps at the Big Splash Pool. I also trained by racing my friend Callan who also did the TRYathlon.

I have been training with my dad after he gets home from work. We would go for a five kilometre ride and for the run I play Touch Football on Tuesday, which involves a lot of running. We would go to the Gungahlin Aquatic Centre, after school, for swimming. Today I raced my best friend Toby in the triathlon and now I am really tired.

When I visited the Bupa tent, I learn’t that instead of a scoop of ice-cream, you can have a healthy fruit pop with mango, pineapple and passionfruit. You can swap ice-cream with a handful of grapes. In your lunchbox you can have healthy foods like grains, vegetables, dairy, fruit, protein and drinks. Therefore healthy food is our favourite and so you should eat it too.

I love healthy food because it tastes great, and you don’t get sick when you eat it. I enjoy being able to go to school, feeling great. It also helps you look great. I don’t like unhealthy food because I feel sick after eating it and then I can’t go to school with my friends.

This year ’s Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon was the biggest turnout we have seen yet. We would like to thank all our volunteers for all their help. We have interviewed s o m e o f t h e v e r y h e l p f u l volunteers and they have shared with us their favourite parts of the day.

Darryl –“ We just love helping kids and my favourite part is the swimming.”

Alex – “It is great fun watching and supporting all the l i t t le TRYathletes.”

Marilyn – “Helping all the kids have fun and it is great just to be here.”

Peter – “Smiles! Just seeing all the smiles on peoples faces.”

T RY i s a m a z i n g . We a re involved in triathlon all because of ME!, when I did the 2013 Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon. Now, my little brother and sister do the “I’m a Superhero” 100m Race at the Triathlon ACT events on race days. Mum started novice races, dad does the Ironman 70.3 and Olympic distance triathlon races. I do TRYstars, Ironkids, Miniman and this is my fourth Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon event.

Dad l ikes to boast about finishing his races. Mum finishes with a huge smile on her face. Most of my training is through having fun playing sport with my mates. My mum trains with the Females in Training (FIT) triathlon club. Sometimes we all ride together.

Does your family TRY?

1. Hardest part: Waking up in the morning when the alarm goes off.

2. Race nutrition: Eat a few more carbohydrates (bread or pasta) 1-2 days before the race and make sure I am hydrated.

3. Favourite discipline: The run for sure.

4 . O t h e r s p o r t : D i s t a n c e running. I love to run!

5. Favourite treat: Ice cream

THE OLYMPIC DREAM - Aaron Royle

Name: Aaron RoyleNickname: BugsAge: 26Born: Newcastle, NSWFirst Triathlon: 13First Tri Club: Maitland

Australia’s latest Olympic triathlete who was inspired by the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Aaron has qualified for the Australian team to compete at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

My name i s Aaron Royle and I am a Triathlete. I’ve never been to an Olympics Games but I did compete in Glasgow at the Commonwealth Games where I finished 8th in the individual and 3rd in the mixed relay. I was also 2012 U/23 ITU World Champion.

I grew up in Newcastle and Lived there until I was 18 when I moved to Wollongong to train under my coach Jamie Turner and the squad he had devolved then. Nowadays I spent my time between Wollongong and Falls Creek during our summer and Spain during the European Summer.

First TriathlonTriathlon started for me at

about the age of 13 years old.

My swim coach at the time, who participated in age group races, suggested that I give one a go. The closest Tri club was Maitland Triathlon club, so dad and I drove the 30 minutes from Newcastle to Maitland one Sunday morning to give it a go. I had no idea what I was doing, but I had a blast. I was a swimmer who ran well so those two were fine and what kid doesn’t love riding their bike? So those 3 added together was a new level of awesomeness! Yes I did win it but to be honest I was competing against people who were even younger than I was and just as inexperienced.

Other sportsWhen I was younger I played

just about all ‘popular ’ sports that many Aussie kids play these days. Cricket, Swimming, Soccer, Running, Football to name a few. It was quickly established that anything that involved a ball or any hand-eye coordination wasn’t really my strong point. Triathlon was the perfect sport for me.

Wishing you all a day filled with fun and fitness – I’ll be cheering for you!

I hope you will follow my Olympic journey and cheer me on in Rio.

This is the seventh time I’ve done the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon and every year it gets better and better. I love to see everyone so enthusiastic and the adrenaline pumping through the atmosphere.

I feel like it helps kids to get out and be active and gives them the chance to have fun while doing it.

Before the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon I always feel nervous and exci ted but I know I ’m surrounded by lots of support and encouragement. Everywhere you go you’re surrounded by smiles and happiness from all the kids that have finished the event. The TRYathlon is the best day because you can do it again every year.

THE RISING STAR - Ellie Hoitink

What's Next

Name: Ellie Hoitink Nickname: Spooky Age: 15 Born: 18 July 2000First Triathlon (age): The Weetbix Kids triathlon (7)First Tri Club: Performance Triathlon Coaching

What are your top achievements in triathlon?

Over the past three years I have had a number of races I am proud of. In 2014 I competed in the ITU youth category. With three races in Runaway Bay

(Queensland), Penrith (Sydney) and Davenport (Tasmania), I managed to win the entire series and rank number one in Australia.

However, the race I am the proudest is my race in Robina, Queensland on the 9th of January this year. I competed in the Junior category for the first time (15-19), and was racing against older and more experienced athletes who had competed internationally, and whom I had idolised. I finished 4th in the race, against some of the best junior triathletes in the country.

What was your first triathlon? The f i rs t t r ia thlon I ever

competed in was the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon.

What did you love about the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon?

I loved the goodie bag when you register and getting out there and having a go alongside my sister and friends. I loved the feeling when I crossed the line in my first ever triathlon and was presented with a finishers medal.

ContributorsWe have lots of great Triathlon, Duathlon (Run / Cycle / Run) and Aquathlon (Swim / Run) races held in ACT each year.

What other sports have you played?

I have competed in many sports . I was a compet i t ive swimmer right up until I was thirteen.

I also did Little Athletics when I was younger and I competed in diving when I was twelve.

My family I was the first one in my family

to take up triathlon. My dad was at me for about two years to get out their and have a go. At the time I was competing in state swimming, however I was making national teams for cross country off no training at all, so I finally decided to have a go at swimming.

After about a year of being involved with tr iathlon, my sister Grace, who was competing at an Australian Open level for swimming at the time, decided to join us for a couple of sessions a week for fitness. About a week later she was hooked, she quit swimming and made the move to triathlon. Not long after that, my parents started to join in and compete.

In 2015 my whole family c o m p e t e d i n t h e W o r l d Championships in Chicago, America . Having my whole family compete in triathlon has been amazing, I get to do what I love alongside my family as well as have the best training partner I could ask for living under the same roof.
