4th Grade Staff Our fourth grade students are a great group of kids. They care

deeply about school and have begun to show leadership in a variety of areas. This includes assisting in the lunchroom, being our daily announcers and modeling good choices throughout the building.

The fourth grade staff at Wegienka is equally outstanding. The children in fourth grade see all three teachers; rotating daily.

My name is Ms. Vizachero and I teach 4th grade. This is my

eighth year teaching in Woodhaven, all of which have been at

Wegienka Elementary. I attended Woodhaven schools from

Kindergarten through 12th grade, graduating from Woodhaven High

School. It is a dream come true to give back to a district that

was responsible for my own education. I received my Bachelor’s

Degree from the University of Michigan and my Master’s Degree

from Marygrove College. I am enjoying another great school year

with the Wegienka Wildcats!

My name is Mrs. Jaskolski. I am a fourth grade teacher at Wegienka. I

am a graduate of Eastern Michigan University. Although this will be my

second year as a Wegienka team member, I have four years of teaching

experience. I am the mom of three very busy girls that keep me on my

toes. I enjoy teaching at Wegienka and look forward to another successful

year!

My name is Christie Horrigan. I have been teaching in the district for 6 years and this is

my 4th year at Wegienka. I have two children Ava and Cruz who also attend school

here at Wegienka and they keep me very busy with

swimming and soccer. I just completed my Masters Degree from Madonna in Decem-

ber. I really enjoy boating, bbq's, biking and

rollerblading with friends and family. .

Well, believe it or not, spring is here. The tem-perature may not be spring-like, but the calen-dar says it’s baseball sea-son, so it must be true. It has been a long, difficult winter for physical activ-ity and the kids are really looking forward to get-ting outside. As soon as the ground hardens up a bit, we will be heading out to do as many of our normal activities as we can, especially running.

COMING UP:

3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes have just finished up our jump rope unit and we are moving on to

a short hockey unit be-fore the all-important paddleball unit.

As is our tradition here at Wegienka, the 5th grade classes will each crown a class champion (one boy, one girl), who will then play against each other in a round robin format to decide our school cham-pion.

Kindergarten, 1st grade and 2nd grade students have been working on hand-eye coordination through activities such as throwing and catching, catching rolling balls, and hitting a ball off a baseball tee.

WELCOME TO SPRING, WILDCATS!

EXERCISE HELPS CHILDREN COPE WITH STRESS: STUDY

The study found that higher

levels of physical activity in

children were associated with

lower levels of stress reactivity.

The study was published just a

day before the U.S. Department

of Health and Human Ser-

vices released a report stating

that kids and teens were not

getting enough physical activity

-- and that schools needed to

start making changes to amp up

their physical education pro-

grams.

Another reason to get your kids

moving? It may improve their

grades. Another recent study

(also published in the Journal

of Pediatrics) showed exercise

improves behavioral and aca-

demic performance in children

with ADD and ADHD.

A study published in February

also found that children in

MR. IRVINE’S P.E. NEWS

PE TIDBITS:

• Please make sure your children wear proper ath-letic shoes. I know the weather is getting warmer, but NO sandals or Crocs!

• Drink lots of fluids during exercise, especially in warm weather (no sugary liquids, as they will only further dehydrate you).

• 2nd-5th grade Kids Mara-thon has been very success-ful, and I would like to see more of the marathon record sheets coming in with the weather warming up!

INFORMATION CONCERNING EDUCATIONAL REQUEST

As we strive to create balanced classrooms that are most beneficial for all students we

take many things into consideration. In this process, staff members meet to discuss and

decide where the students should be placed for the next school year. There are several

factors that we consider: achievement levels, gender, past retention, sibling and student

combination, balance of class size, student’s learning style, special instructional need, and

other reasons deemed important by the staff.

A Parent/Guardian request for a specific educational setting will be taken into con-

sideration, but is not guaranteed.

Please be careful when deciding to request a specific teacher for your child. An educa-

tional request will only be honored ONE TIME during the child’s educational years at

Wegienka Elementary School.

THE PROCEDURE FOR A REQUEST WILL BE AS FOLLOWS:

Request forms will be available in the main office of Wegienka Elementary School on

April 1, 2014.

All requests are due no later than Monday, May 5, 2014.

Parents/Guardians must return the form in person or by mail to Wegienka’s main office.

Requests must be in writing, signed, and dated. If a request is turned in after May 5th,

it will not be considered.

Requests are not being guaranteed due to the many factors that are considered. We re-

serve the right to assign specific classrooms and teachers.

Written requests must include academic and educational reasons as to why the request

is being made.

Remember that a request will only be honored one time during a child’s educational years

(this includes Kindergarten) at Wegienka Elementary School. This means that if your

child is put in the classroom of the teacher that you requested this year, you will not be

able to request another teacher for that child as they get older.

With all things being equal, requests, if honored, will be honored on a first come/first

serve basis. When the request form is returned to the office, it will be dated and num-

bered. While we will do our best to honor requests, designing balanced classrooms that

will benefit our students most, is our first priority. If your request cannot be granted, we

hope that you will respect our decision as it is in the best interest of all students.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions about this process.
