    Weihrauch HW45 Air Pistol

    By Todd Cooper

The German made Weihrauch HW45 is an air pistol I had wanted for a very long time. After owning and shooting many Weley spring!piston air pistols and single stro"e

pneumatics# the time finally came to try the famous HW45 $%eeman P!& 'agnum(.%eeman refers to this pistol as )one of the most powerful spring piston airguns evermade*. The HW45+P!& is indeed a powerful pistol when compared to the other availalespring!piston choices.

I located a Weihrauch dealer in ,anada who stoc"ed the .-- calier HW45 $a"a P!&(and my order was placed. A wee" later the pistol was in my hands and ready for muchtesting# target shooting# and plin"ing. The .-- calier version is rated elow 5fps$&5-.4 m+s( and is not classed as a restricted firearm in ,anada. The velocity rating

from Weihrauch states &/ m+s# which converts to 4-0 fps. 1o pellet weight or energy ismentioned with this rating. The .- calier version# with a velocity rating of 5 fps# isalso acceptale as a non!restricted+non!registered firearm in ,anada. The moreplentiful pellet selection in .-- calier made my choice very easy.

The HW45 is an over!lever design similar to the Weley Tempest# e2cept the arrel ishoused in an upper frame rather than standing alone. The coc"ing effort with the HW45is a it stiff ut I have no troule shooting & or more pellets in a session. The %eemancatalogue rates the effort at &3 pounds for the HW45+P!& and -5 pounds on theTempest.

The trigger on the HW45 is a two stage design that is adustale for weight. I have notyet tin"ered with the trigger on my gun ut it feels crisp and very acceptale. The datafrom the factory states a -3 o factory adusted pull weight out of the o2 ut my testingindicated /6.- ounces.

The grips panels on the HW45 are chec"ered walnut slas# fastened with two slotted

screws on each side. After mar"et ,olt &6&& type grips from Pachmayr and Hogue willfit the HW45 and are a welcome accessory to these pistols. Grips are also availalefrom %eeman and other various sources. Although the HW75+P!- pistol shares thesame standard grip as the HW45# the one!piece HW75 'atch Grip will not fit the HW45unless the grip shan" is shortened and drilled to accept a ottom fastener screw. TheHW75 pistol# with 'atch Grip# will have this alteration performed during the manufactureprocess.

Testing the velocity with the HW45 was an easy tas" ut accuracy testing was a it of a

challenge. 'any spring piston pistols often don8t perform well when shot off a sandagrest so I avoided the effort after an initial trial. I found that resting my forearms on a firmpillow and letting the pistol sit only in my hands wor"ed reasonaly well ut was still notthe est method for evaluating performance. This techni9ue does not give a totally clearindication of top accuracy potential. Plenty of unsupported offhand shooting was done toget an idea of the shootaility of this pistol. :rgonomics# alance# recoil# trigger feel# andshootaility can all e evaluated through offhand shooting. This type of shooting willshow how the gun functions without the aid of a rest.

    HISTORY

The HW45+P!& was orn from the design of the %eeman importing company along withthe engineering and manufacturing of the Weihrauch company. The close resemlanceto the ,olt &6&& frame shows the definite American touch. ,olt &6&& after mar"et gripseven fit the P!& frame# which was a very nice option to incorporate into this pistol.

When this pistol is sold through %eeman dealers it is laelled as the P!& 'agnum utwhen sold y Weihrauch dealers the lael on the left side of the frame says HW45. %othlaels have een availale since the &635 origin and %eeman catalogue ;&-.

HW45 is still availale as a Weihrauch lael with plain lac" grip panels $in all /caliers(.

In earlier years %eeman offered the P!& in .&77# .- and .-- calier versions. The .--calier version seemed to e dropped from the %eeman line around &664 ! 65 with theprinting of the &6thedition catalogue. The .-- version has always remained availale inthe HW45 lael.

=ne of the first prototypes of the P!& 'agnum pistol was the HW75 $%eeman P!-(single stro"e pneumatic pistol. This pistol did not deserve the title )'agnum* ut wasmar"eted as a recoilless match pistol with firearm styling. The HW75+P!- is very similarto the P!& on the e2terior# e2cept for the larger functional hammer and the small frame

release utton. The interior has completely different components along with a moresensitive trigger unit.

    ,O%NTING OPTICS

'ounting optics on the HW45 can e a it frustrating unless the correct mount is used. For some reason Weihrauch decided not to use the standard && mm dovetail groovesie. The groove on my pistol measures &- mm wide and I have contacted a few HW45and P!& owners and found their grooves are also the same. This is a smallinconvenience ut there are solutions.

The first mount I tried on my HW45 was a one piece @portsmatch =P-5, $also "nownas %eeman 54(. This mount was designed for an && mm dovetail so the clamp wouldnot sit properly with the &- mm groove. The mount was also offset ecause the clamp isonly on one side of the ase. There have een rumours of the HW45 having a short mainspring life due to the high

After 75 pellets it had only lost aout & fps ofvelocity ut still gave consistent readings. The spring was changed to gather more testinformation ut it was saved for a spare. SHOOTING CHARACTERISTICS

'any shooters ecome unhappy with the shooting ehaviour of the HW45 pistol. Thepistol does recoil and re9uires a special approach for top accuracy potential. Ignoringthe recoil ehaviour will often lead to frustrations.

I spent some time testing the P=I change with the HW45 using grip pressure changes. All my shooting was done indoors from & meters using an offhand isosceles hold. Allthe & shot groups were measured center!to!center.

The first group was shot using a firm hold on the pistol. This is the type of hold used ona real powder urning .45A,P. A firm# controlling grip. The group printed low on theullseye and formed a & 5+&0Jctc group.

The second group was shot with a moderate hold. The pistol8s grip was firmly pushedinto the we of my right hand and the fingers were wrapped loosely around the front ofthe grip. The group measured & /+3Jctc. The P=I was /+4J higher than the firm holdgroup.

The last group was shot with a very loose hold on the pistol. The ac"strap on the gripwas arely touching my hand. 'y fingers were loosely wrapped around the front of thegrip and the pressure was not even enough to fully compress the pads on my fingers.

The group measurement was & &+4Jctc. When using this type of hold the P=I shiftedupwards - &+4J from the moderate hold grip.

I am right handed and I grip a pistol with my right hand. With all these groups my lefthand was loosely wrapped around my right with the inde2 finger supporting under thetrigger guard. An isosceles stance was used.

  • 7/25/2019 Weihrauch HW45 Air Pistol

    37/58

The P=I changes show that this gun is hold sensitive ut with practice and consistencythe groups can e reasonale. The groups shot with each hold type were all very closein sie. A new set of groups might switch the small differences $offhand shooting(.

For most of my shooting I prefer to use a moderate hold on this pistol. If I s9ueee a ittoo tight the P=I only drops a little it. With a loose hold the pistol practically floats in thehands and I don8t li"e the way that feels and if you accidentally tighten your hold the P=Ichanges drastically. With the moderate hold I can usually cluster my groups closetogether at & metres and the P=I is 9uite consistent.

:veryone must find what wor"s est for them. The aove method is my choice.

=nce again accuracy with this springer pistol is very acceptale.

'y .-- calier HW45 velocity testing is finally over. 'y last atch of tests involveddisassemling the pistol several times to change seals# springs# and spring guidedirection. I learned a lot and as always I freely and gladly share all the information.

  • 7/25/2019 Weihrauch HW45 Air Pistol

    38/58

'y .-- calier HW45 had around -5 shots through it when I starting using &4.5 gr?W@ @uper!H!Point pellets. I found this pellet to e very accurate and locally availale.

All my velocity!vs!temperature testing was recorded with this pellet.

At 03 ! 7F temperatures the velocity was chec"ed many times and found to e 4/ fps. When slightly cooler temps arrived I found a noticeale drop in the velocity. This spurredthe interest to do a velocity!versus!temperature test for this pistol.

'y asement is usually my indoor shooting area and the amient temperature duringthe winter months can e easily controlled. If I prevent the furnace from lowing warmair into this area# I can drop temps to as low as 55F.

I started my cold test y dropping the temp to 53 ! 0F for several hours. The pistol8svelocity was found to e /0 ! /7 fps at this level. I repeated this test many times and

always came up with similar velocities. I wondered how ad things would get so I putmy HW45 into the fridge for aout - minutes. This caused velocity to drop to around/5 fps. =nce again I repeated the test several times. :ven a slight drop to 04F wouldresult in at least &!&5 fps drop in velocity. :very time the pistol warmed up to 7F thevelocity would return to 4/ fps.

'y first suspect was the reech seal. The same type of temperature testing was donewith new reech seals and also with shimmed reech seals. The dropping velocityresults were the same. The reech seal was oviously not the prolem.

The ne2t suspect was the internal luricants. A complete disassemly# cleaning# andlight moly lue tune was done on the pistol. The velocity test results did not change. Ieven tried adding a few drops of pure silicon oil on the spring to lighten up the luricantmi2ture. After many rea"!in shots I still had no change in cold temperatureperformance.

Finally I ordered a new mainspring and two piston seals. I replaced the mainspring andvelocity increased y 5 fps at 7F# ut when I put the pistol in the fridge I would get thesame drastic drop in velocity. I can live with maye a -5 fps drop with a gun that cameout of a 45 ! 43F fridge ut loosing 3 fps is unacceptale.

  • 7/25/2019 Weihrauch HW45 Air Pistol

    39/58

The ne2t step was to replace the piston seal. ?emoving the original factory seal was aneasy tas" ut damage to the seal was inevitale. The new seal went on with a firm pushand a couple of taps from a urethane mallet to seat it. The same lue was appliedduring re!assemly. I shot over 0 pellets to rea"!in the seal and distriute the lue. At7F I was only getting an average velocity of 44 fps.

    A 5 pellets series wentE 45# 43# 44# 4# 44 fps. I was now totally confused.

I disassemled the HW45 and closely loo"ed things over. I noticed the piston ody hada couple of shiny polished mar"s on the ottom and one on the top. I graed myvernier caliper and loc"ed the aws to the piston seal diameter. I then put the awsaround the piston and rolled the tue to chec" for tight spots. @ure enough the shinyspots were very tight. The other areas on the piston has a few thou clearance ut thesespots were galling. ="ay# maye now I found the prolem. I tried to polish the piston y

hand ut 9uic"ly discovered the ody was hardened. I ended up using my Kremel tooland a hard stone to remove a slight trace of metal from the polished areas. The pistonwas then chuc"ed into a drill using a /+4J ruer sanding drum inserted into the hollowend. I spun the piston and carefully polished the e2terior with 5 ! 3 ! &5 ! -4 ! /-grit paper. It was now shiny# smooth# and circular.

:verything was re!assemled again and lued as efore. 'any pellets were shot toring the gun to a settled state. Celocity was chec"ed and 1= ,HA1G:R I thought Iwould at least pic" up the -5 fps that I lost with the new seal at 7F.

The thin"ing cap went ac" on. 'aye the new piston seal is too wide and theincreased friction is what caused the velocity drop. I was now more concerned aoutgetting ac" 4/ fps at 7F. If I had to live with a warm weather pistol then I might aswell have the ma2imum velocity. The new seal caused velocity to drop -5 fps so mayeit was too tight.

I disassemled the pistol and cleaned all the lue off the piston. I used the drum sanderto spin the piston and slowly polish the sides of the seal with 0 grit paper. Thediameter was compared with the last spare seal I had sitting on my ench. The polishedseal started out wider ut now seemed to have the same diameter as the unused seal.

According to my measurements the polished seal was true and the edges were crisp. Iinstalled the piston with proper lues and re!tested. Celocity was /65 ! 4& fps after afew doen shots. =h oy.

  • 7/25/2019 Weihrauch HW45 Air Pistol

    40/58

All I had left to do was install the last spare piston seal. The procedure was done andthe last seal was installed. Celocity was tested and it climed to 4&5 fps.

'y final test was to reverse the spring guide li"e a few P!& owners are now doing. Itwas a simple tas" that only re9uired a very small amount of metal to e removed fromthe disc end of the guide. The gun felt very different when shot with the guide installedthis way. The solid Jthun"J feeling was gone. It8s hard to descrie ut I could tell thingswere different inside. I didn8t li"e the way it felt ut I chronied it anyway. Celocity droppedto /30 ! /65fps. I added a few drops of silicon oil and shot many pellets to spread thelue. Final velocity was tested atE 4# 45# 4/# 4 40 fps Ave 4/ fps. I lost &-fps from when the guide was in the factory installed positionR

I switched the guide ac"# the way it came from the factory. Celocity returned and myreadings wereE 4&7# 4&0# 4&5# 4&6# 4&3 fps Ave 4&7 fps.

I applied a few drops of pure silicon oil to the spring and shot for a it to help distriutethe stuff. I was tired y now so I put the pistol away for the day.

The ne2t day I decided to do the cold temperature test again so I first shot a series ofpellets at 03F and accidentally cut my reech seal with an unseated pellet. I haveseveral spares so I popped one in. The $new warm seal( 03F test wentE 4- 4- 4--#4-4# 4- fps Ave 4-- fps# :nergy 5.74 fpe

The pistol then went into the fridge for - minutes at 43F $chec"ed(. Celocity was testedimmediately after it was removed. ?esults wereE /64# /63# 4# /65# /66 fps Ave /67fps# :nergy 5.3 fpe

I only lost 5.6 velocity with a -F drop in temperature. That8s not too ad considering Iwas loosing &0 ! &3 when the gun had all the original parts. I can live with that.

I have not tested anything for a while and was getting a it ored. >ast night I left myHW45 in a room in my house in which I turned the heat off. I placed a thermometer inthe room and it said 5F. The gun sat at that temp for many hours. I tested velocity.Celocity was also later tested at 03F and 7F. The average velocity with &4.5gr FT@wereE

'y HW45 velocity seems to pea" at 03F. I guess the piston seal li"es that temp forsome reason. The velocity difference etween 03F and 7 ! 7-F is very small utalways there.

The %eeman we site shows an energy rating of 5.& fpe for the P!& $.&77.-(. I almostget 5.& fpe at 5F. I would get that reading at around 55F $I would need only /66 fpswith &4.5 gr(.

With the original parts I was loosing 5 to 0 fps per degree of temperature drop $7F!0F(. With the new parts I am now loosing only & fps per degree.

The velocity at 43F with the new seal is noticealy higher with than what I was gettingwith the old parts at 0F $/67 fps vs /7 fps(. With oth seals compared $new+old( at43F# I am now getting appro2imately 5 fps more velocity.

The temperature sensitivity grief with the HW45+P!& pistols seems to e related to thepiston seal. I don8t "now weather a slightly tighter or looser fit is est# or maye someseals are ust rounder or more pliale. We can only guess at the reason for the velocityimprovement and differences.
