Welcome one another, then, as Christ welcomed you,
for the glory of God. Romans 15:7
Welcome!
Maybe you grew up Catholic. Maybe you think of yourself as Catholic.
Maybe you haven’t been to church in a while. Or, you are worried that you won’t be welcomed here.
And maybe it feels awkward and scary to take that first step. Questions.
Doubts. Yearning, but not sure for what. We get it.
We’ve been there. Now we are here.
Maybe God is calling you, too.
Just as you are. Welcome home.
Sr. Mary Margaret to Retire
This last week, Sr. Mary Margaret announced to the school families that she will be retiring at the end of the school year in June. She has been such a wonderful principal at our school for the past 28 years and we are so grateful for the leadership and vision she has given us.
Under her guidance, St. James School has become one of the highest ranking schools in the Archdiocese, providing an outstanding education and faith foundation for our children. We will have plenty of time to thank her for her generous service during the next six months!
Dear Friends and Family, Thank you all for your beautiful Christmas cards and prayers. Thank you so much for being God’s instrument of blessing in our lives by your being part of the St. James family. We assure you of our special prayers every day in the New Year during our Masses. May the Holy Spirit of God continue to empower you and guide you in your life’s ministry and strengthen you in moments of your weakness and heal you from your illnesses. New Year’s Day is the feast of Mary the Mother of God. Invite her and her son Jesus as part of your family in the New Year so that you may experience daily miracles in your life. God bless you every day of the New Year. The Best New Year’s Gifts: To your friend - loyalty; To your enemy - forgiveness; To your boss - service; To a child - a good example; To your parents - gratitude and devotion; To your mate - love and faithfulness; To all men and women - respect; To God - your life. To yourself – to read “Perfectly Yourself.” May we all find strength in sharing our journey of faith together at St. James. Blessings upon you all.

Welcome! We’ve Missed you! Your Father in heaven wants you to come home, and so do we. The longing you have in your heart can be fulfilled through Jesus and his Catholic Church. You are not alone. Countless of your own brothers and sisters in Christ have returned home, have come back to Confession and to Mass, and have experienced the joy of a renewed relationship with the God who loves them and accepts them unconditionally. Now, you can too. You’ll be welcomed here at Saint James, not judged. We are honored by your presence and want you to experience God’s love through members of His church here at Saint James. ‘There are no strangers here; Only friends you haven't yet met.’ - William Yeats

Consider Spiritual Adoption
This is done by praying that the one particular but unknown child’s life be spared abortion and be allowed to continue to live. Archbishop Fulton Sheen prayed “Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.” To help accomplish this, say this or other prayer daily for a period of nine months. http://SpiritualAdoption.org
Women’s Guild—Susan Patterson
On Wed., Jan. 10th at 7 pm in Kavanagh Hall Susan is the author of the book “How You Can Fight Human Trafficking, Over 100 Ways to Make a Difference.” Susan will speak about human trafficking, how we can protect our children, and what we as a faith community can do to fight trafficking. You can help prevent Human Traffick-ing—modern-day slavery—the fastest growing illegal enterprise in LA. Both Pope Francis and Archbishop Gomez have called on the Catholic community to engage in the fight against Human Trafficking. With the promise of easy money and big profits, traffickers go wherever teens hang out and are very clever and aggressive about taking our children, by force, fraud or coercion. The Procession will be held at the 5:30 pm Mass on Sat. Jan. 20th, and the 8 am, 10 am, noon and 5:30 pm Masses on Sun., Jan. 21st.

Catholic Q & A Q: Belief. The Catechism Of The Catholic Church is, by way of instruction ,(the word catechism means instruction), "...a complete summary of of what Catholics throughout the world believe..." For example, the catechism states, " He who believes in Christ has new life in the Holy Spirit. The moral life, in-creased and brought to maturity in grace, is to reach its fulfillment in the
glory of heaven." These words come on the page of the catechism just before the Beatitudes, which are at the heart of Jesus' preaching. "Blessed are they...". The words of the beatitudes depict our personal vocation, our beliefs, our aspirations drawing us to heaven. What does Matthew Kelly say about our beliefs in his book, Perfectly Yourself?
A: Chapter five in his book is called, What Do You Believe? It's an insightful section that describes the enormously vital role that beliefs play in our happiness and in our unhappiness. He asks if we are aligning our actions with our beliefs. Read Chapter Four in Kelly. Read about the Beatitudes in Part Three, Article 2 of your catechism. As the words of the Beatitudes say, "Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heav-en." Believe it? J.P. Alegria

Finding Love
If you look for me at Christmas, You won’t need a special star. I’m no longer in Bethlehem. I’m right there where you are.
You may not be aware of Me, Amid the celebrations.
You’ll have to look beyond the stores, And all the decorations.
But if you take a moment, From your list of things to do, And listen to your heart, you’ll find I’m waiting there for you.
You’re the one I want to be with, You’re the reason that I came.
And you’ll find me in the stillness,
As I’m whispering your name.
Love, Jesus
San Miguel — Thanks You! The Sisters and staff of Presentation Sisters Learning Center want to extend our deepest gratitude for your generous donation of Christmas toys that we re-ceived this year. You made it possible for 200 children of the Watts community to receive toys on Christmas. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your continued support. May God bless and reward you and your families during the New Year!

Gospel Reflection "Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh." What a wonderful example the Magi give us in their visit to the infant Jesus. First of all, they demonstrate pro-found faith in God's word, spoken through the prophet Micah: "And you, Bethlehem ... from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel" (cf. 5:2). Em-barking on a long and difficult journey, they trust that they will find this newborn king of the Jews in Bethlehem as the prophecy announced. On their arrival at the home of the Holy Family, the Magi also give us an example of profound humility. These im-portant men, to whom kings look for guidance and ad-vice, do not hesitate to bow down, to "prostrate themselves" and give homage to a tiny babe. Putting their own position out of their minds, they reverently worship the infant Lord even as he sits on the lap of his mother. The generosity of these three "kings" is also evident as they open their treasure boxes and give to the poor child the richest of gifts. Traditionally, we understand the gold to symbolize the earthly kingship of Christ, the frankin-cense to represent his divinity, and the myrrh to stand as a symbol of the anointing he will receive upon his death. Finally, the wisdom of these men is evident in their deci-sion to return to their country "by another way." Under-standing the threat that King Herod posed to Jesus, they followed a plan that would help keep the divine child safe even though it meant inconvenience to themselves. Faith, humility, generosity, and wisdom. These gifts are the real legacy of the Three Kings. Today, let us ask God for the blessing of having these gifts in our lives.

Prayer after Communion
Receive, Lord, my entire freedom. Accept the whole of my memory, my intellect and my will.
Whatever I have or possess, it was you who gave it to me; I restore it to you in full, and I surrender it completely to the guidance of your will.
Give me only love of you together with your grace, and I am rich enough and ask for nothing more. Amen. Mass readings and prayers on free ad-free iBreviary smart phone app for iPhone or Android. ibreviary.org
Father, May everything we do begin with your inspiration and continue with your saving help.
Let our work always find its origin in you and through you reach completion.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Dear Habitat for Humanity Home Repair,
From myself and everyone in my family: Thank You. There are simply not enough words or ways to express our full gratitude to your organization. The Home Repair Program didn't merely fix some plumbing, paint and install fixtures; no, you repaired and gave us back our home. Next month it will be the second year anniversary of my mother, Alma Carrasco's death. She lost her nearly 8 year battle of Ovarian Cancer. My mother was nothing short of wonderful and amazing. She was a school volunteer for over 20 years. In her fight with cancer, she hated asking for help. She was always a giver and thought of others before herself It's one of the many reasons why we didn't reach out to Habitat until things had gotten worse. Our house has always had its problems: not enough space for a 6 member family, leaky roof, couldn't run too many appliances at once, and so on. Within the last couple of years it only got worse. We got a citation for the unpermitted back rooms of the house, the roof came down in our living room, the bathtub had cracked and so water was leaking out from underneath, and then the kitchen sink became unusable as those pipes had start-ed to disintegrate and leak out as well. It felt like, as soon as one bad thing happened, the house would only get worse and worse. We tried to repair and restore what we could, but we simply couldn't catch up. My mother’s death took an emotional, mental, physical, and financial toll on our family. I had quit my job to take care of my mother and my three younger brothers. My dad had to take off time from work and so we were struggling financially. We tried for so long to get by and work around the house problems. But thanks to the Home Repair Program, we have our house back, a fresh start. We have a new garage door, a beautiful paint job on the house and garage, an entirely new working bathroom, a functional kitchen sink and new cabinets. Call me crazy, but I don't actually mind washing dishes now that I'm actually able to again. Sometimes people take the little things for granted, like being able to take a bath in your own home. My family and I are forever grateful. Thanks to your organization, I can take care of my family without worrying what new disaster will befall the house. That's security I wasn't sure we'd have for the longest time. From the bottom of our hearts and the entire family, THANK YOU.
Sincerely, Carrasco Family: Anestazcia, (F) age 25 School volunteer Alec, (M) age 20 College Student

Our greatest need at Christmas
If our greatest need had been information, God would have sent us an educator;
If our greatest need had been technology, God would have sent us a scientist;
If our greatest need had been money, God would have sent us an economist;
If our greatest need had been pleasure, God would have sent us an entertainer;
But our greatest need was forgiveness, so God sent us a Savior.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life .” Jn 3:16

Baptisms in December Holy Baptism holds the first place among the sacraments. Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit and the door which gives access to the other sacraments.
Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church. . Jesus commands his disciples to proclaim the Gospel to all nations and to baptize them.
Congratulations to the parents, godparents, family and friends who have witnessed this sacrament. Please welcome our newest members of our church and support their families on their faith journey:

My mother-in-law was the best gift-giver I ever knew. One could say my parents spoiled me growing up, but there was something about her gifts to me that made me feel overwhelmed. I guess it was that after several years I still was surprised that she would think enough of me to get me something no one else would. She was able to make me feel spe-cial every time. Of course, I believe she honored me in this way because I accepted her greatest gift to me, her daughter. Sadly, my mother-in-law did not live long in this world. She passed away over a decade ago due to an aggres-sive cancer. Some of her material gifts to me remain, while others are long gone. But the memories and the effect of those gifts remain because it was never all about the gifts themselves. It was about relationship. It was about her and me. It was about love. What we offer Jesus is never about the gift itself. It is about the motivation behind the action and the effect that action has on the body of Christ. Many of the gifts we give today to God and his people will fade away like the mist of the early morning, but the effects of those actions will last forever. It is about relationship. It is about God and us. It is about love. -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
Welcome Parents of Young Children! Relax! God loves the wiggly little saints and we do too! We understand how difficult it is to attend Mass with all the supplies a family with young children needs. We want you and your children to feel welcomed here. We encourage you to sit near the front so they can see what is going on. Please support these families with encouragement and smiles. Look for these books in the back of the church for use during Mass. Please return to the basket when done for others to use. They are available in the Gift Shop if you’d like to take them home with you. Welcome!
