Welcome to the “We Can Be Heroes” Gala Night

brought to you by Wests Illawarra and The Disability Trust

Tonight’s Gala Night is a very special evening as it is the event’s 20th anniversary and

continues the tradition of local businesses supporting local families. The Gala Night first

commenced at The Fraternity Club in 1998 until 2006 when it moved to Wests

Illawarra with over $1.3M being allocated to local families. With the backing of our

Illawarra community The Disability Trust is able to provide a diverse range of quality

services and programs for children and adults in the Illawarra. We are deeply thankful for

your support.

The Disability Trust has seen some of the biggest changes in our sector that we are ever

likely to see with the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme and we

are proud to say that we have transitioned 2326 participants to the NDIS. Our future looks

bright as we continue to look at innovative ideas to improve our organisation and build

more exciting and fun experiences and opportunities for our participants.

The Disability Trust’s Kids Fund was originally established to bring the needs of children

with disabilities to public attention and to raise funds to provide equipment which was not

available through other means of funding. With the implementation of the NDIS our scope

has now changed. Kids Fund monies continue to be used in purchasing much needed

equipment but may also be used to fund activities, programs, or projects, (which are not

more suitably funded through other avenues such as the NDIS), to the benefit of achieving

inclusion for children with disability.

We sincerely appreciate the continued support from Wests Illawarra – in particular Danny

Munk, Trevor Castle and Stacey Corbeski. We are thankful for the ongoing backing from

Wave FM; thank you Wendy Gee and our MC for the night, Travis Winks. I would like to

further acknowledge all of our wonderful sponsors and indeed everyone here tonight for

and more inclusive Illawarra community for all of us.

Meet Some of our Kids Fund Recipients

Dexter – Age 7

“Dexter recently received a new standing

frame, funded by The Disability Trust Kids

Fund. Standing is so important for bone

density and development in general. Dexter has had previous hip

surgery and there is a high chance he will need this in the future

‐ so ensuring he is in a safe standing posture is very important.

Dexter loves standing and really enjoys his new frame! We are

incredibly thankful for the Kids Fund and to all supporters of this

cause.”

Carly – Age 5

“Carly received the yellow Crocodile Walker through The

Disability Trust’s Kids Fund. Carly has Cerebral Palsy which has

affected the lower part of her body. Without a walking frame

Carly cannot walk due to losing her balance. Words cannot

express how grateful we are of the support from the people in

the community and businesses like yourselves who donate and

help organise equipment and support to children like our

daughter.”

Chloe – Age 2

“Chloe is a fun, independent 2 year old who recently suffered a

stroke which resulted in her being paralysed on her left side.

Through lots of therapy and determination, Chloe regained the

ability to walk whilst wearing her AFO (ankle foot orthoses)

however movement in her left arm and hand hasn’t returned as

quickly, hence continued therapy for her left arm is important.

To receive this custom made adjustable chair through The

Disability Trust Kids Fund is wonderful as the chair supports

Chloe while sitting and helps her to concentrate on a task so

that we can encourage more use of her left side. We are ever‐

grateful to receive such an essential aid for Chloe’s recovery.”
