Algebra Comprehensive
Today is a A-day! (I think...)
January 2, 2012
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!
Warm-up:
Solve the following proportions:
A car travels 125 miles in 3 hours. How far would it travel in 5 hours?1.
2.
Jane wants to make a doll that is a replica of a friend. The scale that she will use is 1 centimeter
on the doll will represent 2 inches on her friend. Her friend’s foot measures 8.5 inches. What will
be the size of the doll’s foot?
Title: Solving Literal Equations/Evaluating Formula's
Literal Equation: when the coefficients and constants have been replaced by variables.
Ex.) ax + b = c
Example 1: Solve the equation above for x. Then use the solution to solve 2x + 5 = 11
You try!
1.) Solve the literal equation for x. Then use the solution to solve the equation.
a - bx = c 12 - 5x = -3
Example 2: Rewrite 3x + 2y = 8; so that y is a function of x.
Example 3:
The area A of a triangle is given by the formula A = ½bh where b is the base and h is the height.
a.) Solve the formula for the height h.
b.) Substitute 64.4 for A and 14 for b in the rewritten formula. Solve for the height.
You try!
1.) Write 5x + 4y = 20 so that y is a function of x.
2.) The perimeter P of a rectangle is given by the formula P = 2L + 2w where L is the length and w is the width.
a.) Solve the formula for the width w.
b.) Use the rewritten formula to find the width of the rectangle shown.
P = 19.2 ft.w
7.2 ft.
Challenge:A pet store sells aquariums that are rectangular prisms. The volume V of an aquarium is given by the formula V=lwh where l is the length, w is the width, and h is the height.
a. Solve the formula for h.
b. Use the rewritten formula to find the height of an aquarium shown, which has a volume of 5850 cubic inches.
