As we start a new academic year it is, as always, great to see everyone back after the holiday break and to meet new students for the first time. Thank you very much for supporting us last year. It was a most enjoyable and fulfilling year: a real privilege to work with and support the 45 students who belonged to the Community Maths School during its 2 nd year. We are thrilled to say that those who sat GCSE and A Level exams did very well. Just as exciting and rewarding are the many real improvements by students working hard to build their confidence and understanding to set their own new higher level of maths. I remain confident that the Community Maths School format of working in small groups is effective and is in my experience better than one-to-one tuition; most students respond better in small groups and find it less intimidating than one-to- one sessions. They also become more resilient in their own maths and less reliant on the tutor. My aim for the Community Maths School has always been to make high quality maths tuition affordable and accessible to as many students as possible. Our costs have increased slightly and I have worked hard to maintain the course fees for this academic year the same as last year for loyal and committed students. Costings The Confidence in Maths and Success at GCSE courses Per session £20 Per 6 session course £100 Per 6 session course with ‘early bird’ registration discount £90 (early bird registration ends one week prior to course start – on or by open day September 14th) Although we believe that a 6 session course is the optimum for improvement, where space allows, individual sessions may be available. AS and A Level sessions Per group session £25 Per 6 session block £130

A warm welcome to the Community Maths School.

I remain confident that the Community Maths School format of working in small groups is effective and is in my experience better than one-to-one tuition; most students respond better in small groups and find it less intimidating than one-to-one sessions.

**New Course for Sept 2013 **

The Maths Retake Formula – a course for those students wanting to re-sit Maths GCSE in November.

The Retake Formula is a blend of weekly sessions, holiday grade booster sessions and drop in clinics on the evenings before the exams designed to maximise success. There is an exciting optional extra for those students who suffer from a lack of confidence or bad ‘exam nerves’ – The Retake Zone – these are sessions run by Kate Patterson a former head teacher who

is now a trained ‘thrive programme’ consultant and hypnotherapist who has much expertise in supporting students with strategies to overcome their fears and phobias and in particular fulfil their true potential in the exams.

**New Staff Member Sept 2013 **

To provide specialist experience to year 4 and 5 students, we are delighted to welcome Anna Keating–Fedders, who has kindly agreed to join the team of excellent maths teachers who make the Community Maths School special. Anna is currently a maths teacher at St Albans RC High School Ipswich but was recently a co-ordinator of maths at St Louis Middle School Bury St Edmunds and has a wealth of expertise in successfully teaching maths to younger students.

Thank you once again for your support of the Community Maths School.
