There is so much to think about at the beginning of a new school year. This packet
includes a few resources that will help get your new year off to an organized start.
This packet includes:
Student Information Student Information Sheet Contact Sheet Class Chart
Find Someone Who Homework PlanStudent Information
The Student Information Sheetis an excellent way to stay in contact with your
families throughout the year. The back of each student sheet can be used to make
notes on your contacts. Or, you can use the Contact Sheet. Keeping a record of
your contacts can be a valuable resource in the event that an issue arises. The
Class Chart can be used to monitor student behavior, homework, and an additional
space is provided for you to personalize for your needs. A blank Class Chart is
also included for you. Keeping data provides a means for you to communicateobjectively to parents and is also a tool for you to use to find patterns in student
behavior.
Getting to Know Your Students
It is important to build a community within your classroom. Find Someone Who is
one way to get the ball rolling.
Instructions for Find Someone Who
You can use the premade form or the blank one if you want to fill in your own ideas.
Distribute one copy to each student. Explain to students that you want them to
get to know their classmates. Read through all of the activities on the paper. Be
sure students are clear about each activity. For younger students, you may want to
read each activity and have students raise their hand to indicate whether or not

they participated in that event. This will give you some information to use if you
need to provide assistance to students. Use a signal, (like music, a bell, etc.) and
have students walk around and find other students who have participated in the
listed activities. A few things to keep the game rolling: Let students sign one
activity on their own paper; students can only sign their name once on a paper, if a
student gets a signature from another student, require that they look at that
students paper to see if there is an activity they can sign, reinforce that the point
of the game is to get to know their classmates.
My Homework Plan
Research indicates that when students know their role in completing homework,
the homework becomes a more effective tool for learning.
(http://www.netc.org/focus/strategies/home.php)This plan is only the beginning.
Every night, have students write the purpose of the homework assignment. (This is
homework is to help me practice math facts. This homework is to help me practice
writing sentences correctly.)
Some tips to help you get started: After distributing the homework, ask students
why they think this assignment was selected for homework. At first, it might be a
good idea to create the purpose sentence as a class, but as the year progresses,
most second and some first grade students will be able to develop their ownstatement of purpose for each assignment. Another approach is to have students
formulate the purpose statement as a group. Younger students might need some
extra assistance with this.
I hope this packet provides you with some fresh ideas that help set the tone for an
exciting and fun year of learning for you and your students!
