95 Express Lanes: Scope of Improvements• Expand existing reversible HOV lanes

from two to three lanes for 14 miles from just north of Edsall Road on I-395 to the Prince William Parkway

• Improve the existing two HOV lanes for six miles from Prince William Parkway to Route 234/Dumfries

• Build new nine mile reversible extension of existing HOV lanes from Dumfries to Garrisonville Rd in Stafford County

• Add new or improved access to and from HOV/HOT network at key interchanges

Upcoming steel beam operations requiring lane closures, detours and stoppages on I-95 include:

• I-95 SB at Dumfries/Joplin Flyover Ramp scheduled for weekend of July 12-14

• Fairfax County Parkway Flyover Ramp scheduled for August/September 2013

• North of Edsall Road, Turkeycock Flyover Ramp scheduled for September 2013

• Telegraph Road Overpass near Quantico schedule for late summer/fall 2013

• Garrisonville Road Flyover Ramp scheduled for late fall 2013

Congestion Relief Strategies for I-95/I-395On the Road

• Increased Virginia State Police presence and Safety Service Patrols – including coverage on Route 1 (major detour route)

• Increased dynamic message signs alerting travelers to construction and of construction trucks entering the work zone “Queue signs” to warn drivers of trucks entering the highway

• Speed radar trailers to slow traffic in the work zone• More PCMS & CCTV units to monitor the work zone and post safety messages

Coordination with Other I-95 Improvement Projects• Coordination between multiple entities to ensure smooth implementation of

multiple construction operations and traffic impacts: VDOT Megaprojects VDOT NOVA and Fredericksburg Districts Contractors Public outreach teams

495 Northbound Shoulder-Use Lane Project• Approximately 1.5 mile congestion

relief project from the end of the 495 Express Lanes (Old Dominion Drive) to just past the George Washington Parkway Interchange: Shoulder-use lane will provide five

travel lanes during peak p.m. travel times

Will reduce delays and backups for drivers headed to the American Legion Bridge and into Maryland

• Construction scheduled to start mid-2014

• The new lane will be open to traffic by late 2014

Tysons Metrorail Station Access Management Study

(TMSAMS)

• TMSAMS provided recommendations on improved

transit, pedestrian and bicycle accommodations

• TMSAMS recommended 85 pedestrian improvement

projects

• In December 2009 the Board allocated federal CMAQ

funding of $4.375 million for 8 priority TMSAMS

pedestrian improvement projects
