I am Father Emanuel Torres-Fuentes, born 42 years ago on Christ-mas. I grew up in Jalapa, Veracruz, Mexico, the second of four children. My mom, two sisters, and brother live in Jalapa. My dad passed away three years ago. I attended General Alvaro Obregon Elementary School, Carolino Anaya Middle School, Licenciado Antonio Maria de Rivera High School, and then studied Teaching at the Universidad Veracruzana. My dream was to become a teacher and after graduation in 2004, to work at a public or private school with hopes of having a good experience teaching Spanish grammar to chil-dren and adults. Writing in Spanish is not easy because of its many grammat-ical rules and complex sentences. My dream of teaching did not come true; everything happens for a reason.

Deciding not to pursue teaching, feeling unfulfilled, I wanted to know more about God and have a real encounter with him. I wanted God to be my life’s rock, giving meaning, direction, and purpose. Invited to be a lector, Eucharistic minister, give talks, and oversee youth min-istry at Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Jalapa, it was during this time and doing these activities that I initially felt God inviting me to discern a call to the priesthood. I entered San Rafael Guizar y Valencia Seminary to study Philosophy.

In 2012, I was invited to study Theology at the University of St. Mary of the Lake. During my five years at Mundelein Seminary, my most formative experiences were becoming a Master of Ceremo-nies for Liturgy, traveling on a Mission trip to Tucson, Arizona, on pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and learning American culture.

Ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Chicago in 2018, my first assignment was at Saint Juliana Parish in Chicago. I am thankful for the years I served there, and for the love and support of the staff and parishioners. Becoming associate pastor of Saint Joseph Parish on July 1st is a tremendous joy for me. I am grateful to Cardinal Cupich for appointing me to this fine parish, and to Father John Trout, Father Martin Luboyera, Father John Hennessey, and the staff for their gracious welcome. I hope to meet all of you soon to thank you for your prayers and welcome.

I enjoy reading, pop music and Sudoku and watching football and hockey games, and would like to learn how to golf. Excited about our upcoming years together, I pray to Jesus that I serve and love you well. I look forward to sharing our faith, continuing to grow in love with God and the Church and getting to know you.

My favorite Scripture passage changes often but Philippians 4:13 sustains me: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” It is an ongoing reminder for me that with God’s grace I can do all things in my ministry - even in a different culture and language.

A School Year to Remember

The Journey Begins: The 8th Grade SJCS class celebrated Gradu-ation in June. Principal Anne Phoenix hands a diploma to a recent graduate of St. Joseph Catholic School.

The 2020 - 21 school year was unlike any SJCS has had, and with every obstacle presented to them, the class of

2020 - 21 displayed a grace and positive attitude as they perservered through it all. This class will not be forgotten.

Congratulations to them.

This is the Year of St. Joseph. And as the patron saint of our church, we have special celebrations in place. We need volunteer lead-ers, individuals that will take re-sponsibility for groups of adult and youth volunteers. People that will coordinate and direct volunteer activities. We are looking for in-dividuals that work 3 times a year organizing volunteer groups for the soup kitchen. We have many people that want to volunteer and participate, but we are short on leaders that can direct and coor-dinate volunteers. New volunteers have many questions, they want to know what is involved, what is the time commitment and understand what they will be participating in. These interactions take time and patience, but are necessary for a good volunteering experience. We need individuals to help in this area. Helping people learn to help others is very rewarding. We would like help doing this.

As we celebrate summer and enjoy the outdoors, let us be mindful of our impact on the environment. Some ways we can do this include: Making our picnics, barbecues, camping trips zero-waste. Use lightweight reusable plates, utensils, bowls, cups and cloth napkins. Get creative with packaging. Mason jars make excellent reusable con-

tainers, for example. Put used items in a washable cloth bag to hold them until you get home. Reserve a bag for recyclables and a container for compostables. If you must use disposables, use biodegradable paper products instead of plastic. Ditch the straws. Use reusable containers for drinks or take beverages in metal or glass containers that can be re-cycled. Skipping the plastic water bottled water saves money and the environment.

In the days of the Old Testament the Jews are present-ed as God’s chosen people, a people set apart to give and bring glory to God in Heaven. Yet with Jesus’ in-carnation we are invited to see ourselves in a more personal and intimate relationship with God as His adopted children. We are chosen not only as a people but we are chosen individually to come to know and love God as Father and be loved intimately in a very personal way through the gift of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. Yet, like the Israelites before us, we are called to respond to the generosity of our God by liv-ing to bring glory to Him. We are called to make our

Father proud of who we are becoming. The Gospel reminds us that we are also called to brag about our Father and His tremendous beneficence to all of His children who are equally deserving of His love. As God loves His children, we carry Him forth into the world around us each and every day. Do we make Him proud? Like-wise we are reminded that not all of those we encounter will be open to the word of the Lord and may reject us for sharing our faith. Nevertheless, we must proudly and enthusiastically keep sharing the Gospel. As we continue to live more openly as faithful models as God’s children, the Holy Spirit will encourage us and help to change the world around us.

Our Scriptures last week reminded us that as we seek to enter into the Kingdom of God we should strive to deepen our faith in the Lord, all the while recognizing that the evil one will continue to tempt us to turn away or even turn back. This week we are cautioned that the journey to grow in faith never ends. The evil one can appeal to our pride and try to convince us that we have done enough, that we are holy and living a holy life. We are to always be on guard against contentment and complacency. St. Paul reminds us to seek out and give thanks for the “thorn that keeps us from

becoming to elated.” The “thorn” that helps us to be humble and to not let us get too full of ourselves should not shame us but spur us on to keep growing stronger in our faith and trust in the Lord. Without growth we risk stagnation and backsliding. We are encouraged to seek out, but not dwell on, our weaknesses so that we mightcontinuously grow closer to Christ and enter more deeply into life in the Kingdom of God. As we humbly do so, we seek to give glory and honor to the Lord rather than seeking the admiration of others. Even Jesus was not recognized in His own hometown for the glorifying works of His life saving ministry. Let us always be on the lookout for ways that we can enter more deeply into the fullness of our faith so that we might have life with an abundance of grace.

Our Scripture passages this week present one of the more frequent images we find, that of the shepherd and the sheep. It is far too easy for us to see ourselves as the sheep and Christ as the shep-herd. Likewise it is more comfortable for us to think of our bish-ops, priests and other Church figures when we read the admonition contained in the First Reading from the prophet Jeremiah: “Woe to the shepherds who mislead and scatter the flock of my pasture, says the Lord.” Have no doubt that Jesus is the true shepherd and we are to look to our priests and bishops as our earthly shepherds. However, Paul, in his letter to the Ephesians, reminds us that Jesus

is the one who leads us all to a place of everlasting peace. We are also taught that our call is to be imitators of Christ and share in His ministry as priest, prophet and king. The Second Vatican Council in the document Lumen Gentium further reminds us that we in the laity are co-responsible with the hierarchy to bring the Good News to the world. We too are called to act as Jesus did in the Gospel passage when He looked around and saw the vast crowd in need of a shepherd. We are called to be shepherds to those we encounter in our daily lives. We too share the responsibility with our Church leaders to look around to find the lost and forsaken and find ways to invite them to join us in the peaceful sheepfold where Jesus will look out for us and provide for our deepest needs with His love and mercy. Let us pray for the grace, courage and wisdom to assume our responsibility as shepherds to draw others to Christ.

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time | July 25 Kings 4:42-44; Psalm 145:10-11, 16-16, 17-18; Ephesians 4:1-6; John 6:1-15

Throughout Ordinary Time the Scriptures often point us to the miraculous power and generous love of Jesus as He performs signs and wonders. While many, like those five thousand in this week’s Gospel, may be attracted by miraculous signs and wonders, Jesus knew their faith needed to be nourished and sustained. The abundant love that He shares knows no bounds. The love of God is end-less no matter how many are drawn in. There will always be more love available so that we can feed the hungry and bring healing to those who are hurting, downtrodden or oppressed. We are reminded of this life-sustaining power each time we are united with Christ in the Holy Eucharist. Likewise, as Paul reminds us again in the let-

ter to the Ephesians, we are called to live our lives in unity with Christ to “preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” Christ will nourish and sustain us if we let His miraculous love and mercy flow into our lives. As we live in the abundance of His love, let us be inspired to help others to be united to that same abundant love by living our life in a manner worthy of the call we have received as children of God.
