Welcome to Aarhus
Aarhus is Denmark’s second-largest city. Today, more than 300,000 people live here – right under the tip of Jutland’s ‘nose’. In Aarhus you are never far from the woods or from a lovely beach, making it easy to combine all types of outdoor pursuits with everything that urban living has to offer.
Aarhus brings together things modern and ancient. The history of the city stretches back many centuries, and the rich combination of new and old adds a unique sense of charm and perspective. This charm and diversity can also to a very large extent be attributed to the citizens of Aarhus, who are people of all ages and from all parts of the world.
Regardless of which stage in life you are at, Aarhus offers an abundance of activities and events that you will hopefully appreciate as a citizen – including cultural events, outdoor pursuits, sporting activities and activities for children.
Aarhusians are friendly and open-minded. I am convinced that you will be welcomed with a smile!
There are thus lots of reasons why Aarhus is such a popular city. More than anything, it is a ‘city in movement’, and we are delighted to welcome any newcomer wanting to hop on board. I hope that you will want to make your own positive contribution to Aarhus.
As for me, I would like to bid you welcome to our wonderful city.
Kind regards,
Marc Perera ChristensenAlderman for Culture & Citizens’ Services
Welcome to wonderful Aarhus
As mayor of Aarhus, I am delighted to welcome you to our lovely city and the endless opportunities it has to offer.
Compared to the national average, Aarhus boasts the youngest population of all cities in Denmark – not least thanks to our popular institutions of higher education which have over 40,000 students on more than 130 different study programmes.
But the ambitions of Aarhus go even further: As stated in the City of Aarhus’s business development plan, ‘Knowledge for Growth’, our goal is to become one of the most attractive cities of knowledge and education in Northern Europe.
Aarhus is experiencing rapid growth and has welcomed 15,000 new inhabitants over the past ten years; at the same time, 20,000 jobs have been created, primarily within the knowledge, service and innovation industries. Aarhus has performed very well, and we have no plans of stopping now!
Our ambitious goal is for the current population of more than 310,000 to grow by an additional 75,000 inhabitants by 2030, including 15-20,000 students. In addition, we must create 50,000 new jobs and build 50,000 new homes.
Leave your fingerprint on Aarhus and help us ensure that the city remains as vibrant and colourful as it is today. Together we will work to ensure that Aarhus maintains its leading position as a growth centre with international impact.
Once again, welcome to Aarhus. I hope that your dreams for the future will come true here.
Jacob Bundsgaard Mayor

Welcome
Welcome to east Jutland and the city of aarhusEast Jutland is characterised by an active and visionary business community and a high level of collaboration spanning both regions and local authorities. Seven municipalities in East Jutland – Norddjurs, Syddjurs, Favrskov, Odder, Samsø, Skanderborg and Aarhus – have therefore started collaborating under the heading Business Region Aarhus. One of the fruits of this collaboration is this welcome pack which you are now reading. It provides a wealth of practical information for anyone who is planning on living in and getting to know East Jutland and the various towns and cities in the region.
East Jutland offers a wide range of cultural experiences and an extremely varied natural landscape with verdant countryside, large woods and miles of coastline. Towns large and small leave their mark on the region. In the Ice Age, glaciers helped shape the stunning scenery which now serves as a backdrop for everything there is to see and do in this part of Denmark. East Jutland is home to quiet, bustling and charming towns and villages with exciting things happening throughout the year. On top of which, you can always visit one of the many cultural sights and attractions. In other words, East Jutland has every-thing you could possibly want!
At the heart of East Jutland, you find Denmark’s second-largest metropolis, Aarhus, a city with a population of more than 300,000 people. Aarhus has a strong university presence, and the high concentration of students makes it the youngest city in Denmark. There is easy access to the countryside, a lively cultural scene and thriving city life. Commerce is flourishing, and Aarhus is one of Denmark’s fastest-growing cities.
In recent years, Aarhus has achieved several milestones as an international knowledge centre: A number of international businesses have decided to establish themselves or

expand their activities in Aarhus. Aarhus University ranks in the top 100 of the world’s 17,000 universities, and more and more international employees, researchers and students are coming to Aarhus. At the same time, Aarhus has launched its bid to be European City of Culture in 2017.
The Aarhus area is one of the most popular worldwide for leading businesses within, for example, the fi eld of cleantech, and the wind power industry in particular has a strong presence in and around Aarhus, making it the capital of wind energy with a dedicated focus on education, knowledge and innovation.

The ambition is that the project should not only benefi t Aarhus but that it will support developments and strengthen collaboration across the entire Central Denmark Region.
CULTURE IN AARHUSAarhus is a city where generations can meet to experience new and old, trendy and historical in a rich environment of unique cultural experiences. The vision is that the city will lead the way, be innovative and experimental, and inject pulse.
Aarhus has a ‘cultural zone’ centred on the area around the City Hall, Concert Hall Aarhus (Musikhuset), the ARoS art museum, the rhythmic music venue VoxHall and the new venue for jazz and world music, Atlas.
A short distance away you can take a step back in time by visiting Den Gamle By (The Old Town) and the Aarhus City Museum, or enjoy the Botanical Gardens with their large and unique tropical greenhouses.
Other museum experiences can be found at the Moesgaard Museum south of the city, at the Natural History Museum near the university, at the Women’s Museum located in the old city hall near the Cathedral and at the Viking Museum at Bispetorv.
In 2012, a new production centre for dramatic art, visual art and literature is opening on the site of the disused rail freight terminal which will further enhance the geographical coherence of the cultural scene. Each year at the end of August, the city overfl ows with life, cultural experiences and

festivity with people from near and far during Aarhus Festival. The week-long festival is one of northern Europe’s biggest art and cultural events with a programme that boasts almost every conceivable art form from dance, theatre, opera and music to children’s culture and sport. The festival has a new theme every year.
In June 2011, Aarhus, together with Randers and Aalborg, is hosting the fi nals of the European Under-21 Football Championship. The ‘Sculptures by the Sea’ open-air exhibi-tion is returning, bringing artists from all over the world together to exhibit their works on the beach. In early July 2013, the harbour will be fi lled with historical sailing ships when the Tall Ships Race visits Aarhus again.

CULTURE & LEISURE
Going to the library is one of the most popular cultural activities in Denmark, and the annual number of visitors runs into millions.
The libraries in Denmark fulfi l an important democratic function. The main task of the libraries is to provide citizens with equal and free access to information, knowledge and culture as well as to support their lifelong learning. The libraries thereby constitute an important foundation for citizens’ freedom of thought and the democratic process.
A library gives you every opportunity to fi nd inspiration and immerse yourself in cultural experiences. You can obtain a library card and use library facilities free of charge. The libraries lend out books in Danish and in other languages, magazines, audio books, CDs and fi lms on DVD. You can also log on to the Internet via the library’s PCs free of charge, read newspapers and borrow books from other libraries.
In addition to lending library materials, the public libraries also offer other services. Most libraries offer courses, for example in basic Internet use, in how to use email, public digital self-service solutions, social networks and much more. Helping school-children with their homework is another service offered by many libraries.
In most municipalities, the public libraries provide access to downloading music, fi lm streaming, downloading ebooks, downloading audio books and access to databases, either from home or from the library’s PCs.
The libraries’ many activities also include cultural events such as authors’ nights, art exhibitions, concerts, lectures, book readings, children’s fi lm and theatre.
LIBRARIES IN AARHUSThe libraries in Aarhus consist of a main library and eighteen branch libraries. The libraries’ stocks of materials constitute more than one million items and have a circula-tion of more than 5.3 million. The libraries collaborate with Citizens’ Services to provide municipal services, knowledge, inspiration and learning. The vision is for the Aarhus libraries to develop into community centres offering a wide range of services for citizens and the local community focusing on the dissemination of knowledge and communica-tion, culture and experiences as well as citizens’ services.
The libraries in Aarhus subscribe to a large number of Danish and foreign newspapers and magazines. Finally, the libraries organise IT courses, help with homework, art exhi-bitions, concerts, reading clubs and many other events.
Via the Internet, you can, of course, also browse the libraries’ collection of material and make reservations online. You will then be informed as soon as the material is available for collection at your local library.
To obtain a library card, you will have to go to the library and present a valid photo ID. The library card resembles a credit card and bears a card number and a bar code. You decide your own fi ve-digit PIN code and to which library you want to be attached. With your library card, you can now make use of the library´s self-service services.
Using your library card and PIN code, you can make use of the numerous digital library services at www.aakb.dk/in-english. You can search for materials online, make reserva-tions, renew your loans, obtain updates on your borrower status and much more.
All the branches which are part of Aarhus public libraries are set up for wireless access – simply use your laptop.A wireless network provides access to the library’s complement of electronic resources – for example articles appearing in Danish newspapers. It’s easy, convenient and free.

As an active member of a club or association, you are able to meet new people, form friendships and expand your network while simultaneously improving your Danish and learning more about Denmark. One of the most common ways of doing so is by joining a sports club. FAMILY & HEALTH CARE
All children in Denmark are guaranteed a place in a childcare institution from when they are 26 weeks old and until they start school. In certain municipalities, this day care guarantee is valid for a longer period. It means that your child is guaranteed a place in a nursery, with a childminder or in a kindergarten within three months of you having applied for a place. Most children are cared for in a childcare institution, but you are also able to have your child looked after in a private home.
DAY NURSERIES Day nurseries/crèches receive children aged 0-3 years and employ qualifi ed social edu-cators and assistant social educators. At nursery, your child’s development, well-being, play and learning will be supported and encouraged.
CHILDMINDINGLike the nurseries, childminding is for children aged 0-3 years. The children are looked after in the childminder’s own home, where they engage in activities depending on their needs, well-being and development.
KINDERGARTENSA kindergarten is a day care institution which cares for children from the age of three and until they start school. Qualifi ed social educators and assistant social educators ensure that your child is offered a wide range of experiences and activities, preparing it for the challenges it will encounter at school.
AGE-INTEGRATED INSTITUTIONS Aarhus has age-integrated institutions for children aged 0-6 years which receive chil-dren from when they are six months old and where they can stay until they start school. Qualifi ed social educators and assistant social educators are employed at the institu-tions where they organise a diverse range of experiences and activities for the children.
PRIVATE CHILDCARE UNDER THE FREE CHOICE SCHEMEParents of children aged 0-6 in the City of Aarhus can choose to receive a contribution for a private childcare scheme instead of a place at a municipal childcare institution or childminder.
You are eligible for a contribution:• if you live in the City of Aarhus • from when your child is 0 years and until he/she is able to start Year 0 at school• in special cases and following an assessment if a parent receives maternity/paternity

SCHOOLING IN DENMARK Education is compulsory in Denmark, but school attendance is not. Children must re-ceive 10 years of compulsory education starting in August in the year in which they turn six years old. All children receive free education in Danish primary and lower second-ary schools, but alternatives exist such as private independent schools and residential continuation schools, where parents have to pay school fees. It is also possible to teach your child at home, but very few people choose this option.
PRIMARY AND LOWER SECONDARY SCHOOLThe municipal primary and lower secondary schools, the Folkeskole, offer schooling for all children aged 6-16. The Folkeskole consists of a pre-school class, nine years of primary and lower secondary education and an optional Year 10.
The primary and lower secondary schools must equip pupils with academic qualifi ca-tions and generally prepare them for their role as citizens in a democratic society. The schools work closely with parents, and base their approach on child-centred learning.
Your child automatically belongs to the primary/lower secondary school in the school district where you live. This means that your child is entitled to be admitted to the school and to an after-school club, if there is one. A principle of free choice of school applies in Denmark, so you can freely enrol your child at another school if you wish, but please note that you must fi nd out whether there is a place for your child outside your school district before you can send him or her to a school other than your district school.
PRIVATE INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS Private independent schools often give priority to particular values and provide an alter-native to the municipal primary and lower secondary schools. Most private independ-ent schools offer schooling from Year 0 to Year 10. If you enrol your child at a private independent school, please note that it is only partly funded by the State, and that you will therefore have to pay school fees.
CONTINUATION SCHOOLSIn Years 8-10, your child can attend a residential continuation school. Continuation schools cater for children aged 14-18. Most continuation schools teach the same range of academic subjects as those taught at the municipal lower secondary schools. In ad-dition, the continuation schools offer a number of practical and creative subjects which vary according to the school’s profi le. As continuation schools are self-governing institu-tions, they charge school fees.
YOUTH EDUCATIONAfter lower secondary school, many young people choose to take a youth education. There is a wide range of youth education programmes, but they can basically be divided into two categories: vocational training and upper secondary schooling. Vocational train-ing courses focus on practical skills and provide a direct way-in to employment while the upper secondary schools focus on study and abstraction, paving the way for higher

education. In August 2011, an international line is starting at Langkaer Gymnasium and IB World School in the City of Aarhus.Vocational training and upper secondary school courses are provided free of charge.
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF AARHUSEast Jutland has an international school in the City of Aarhus. The international school educates children aged 6-16. Many ISAa students continue their international educa-tions by attending an IBO diploma programme. ISAa is currently working on becoming IB-certifi ed which, is expected to happen as of August 2012. The school is open to all children, but is primarily aimed at:• Non-Danish children of parents who are living in Denmark for a limited period• Children of Danish parents who are returning from abroad or who are about to leave to
work abroad• Children of Danish parents who want to give their children an international, English-
language education
The International School of Aarhus - ISAaFor further information, please visit www.isaa.dk.
SCHOOLS IN AARHUSThe City of Aarhus has 66 schools, of which 16 are private. Most of the schools teach children from Year 0 to Year 9. If your child wishes to attend Year 10, he or she can choose to attend one of the City of Aarhus’s nine Year 10 centres.Citizens’ Services will provide a list of the schools located closest to where you live.
INTERNATIONAL WELCOME CLASSChildren with a good school background from their home country can attend a relatively short course before starting in an ordinary class in a primary or lower secondary school. This happens in an international welcome class. The class has pupils aged between seven and nine years of age (corresponding to Years 1-3) who have recently arrived in Denmark. The international welcome class is run at Læssøesgades Skole.

SFO - AFTER-SCHOOL CLUBSAll municipal schools in the City of Aarhus have an after-school club, also known as the SFO, where children in Years 0-4 are looked after once lessons have fi nished for the day. The after-school clubs focus on supporting the development of your child’s personal, so-cial and cultural competencies. In the after-school clubs, children have ample opportu-nity to play with their friends and cultivate new friendships, while their imagination and creativity are stimulated through enjoyable activities and games both indoors and out. Membership of the after-school club is voluntary and is paid for by the parents.

The Danish health care service covers many different institutions and functions in the public arena. Their common aim is to heal and prevent illness and promote public health in Denmark. If you are a permanent resident in Denmark, you are entitled to help from the Danish health care service. When you move to Denmark, you are covered by the Danish health insurance system from the day you register with the national registration offi ce. Most examinations and treatments are free, all you need is a health insurance card.
If you are staying in Denmark temporarily and are not registered with the national registration offi ce, you are entitled to free treatment by the public health service if you sud-denly fall ill. However, you will only receive free treatment which enables you to travel home.If you are covered by public health insurance in an EU country, Iceland, Norway or Liech-tenstein, you are entitled to emergency treatment in the Danish public health service.

Once children turn 15, they can choose their own doctor.

SOCIETY
As a student in Aarhus, there are a lot of things you need to know. Below, we have sought to provide as much useful information as possible about studying in Aarhus. If there is anything missing, you can fi nd more information at www.businessregionaarhus.dk.
ACCOMMODATION
Many new students come to Aarhus every year. Con-sequently, it can be hard to fi nd accommodation in the city. However, by starting to look for somewhere to live as early as possible, it improves your chances con-siderably. You can look for accommodation at Student Housing Aarhus (www.stud-enthousingaarhus.dk), which offers rooms in halls of residence and fl ats. The alternative is try your luck in the private housing market. However, here it can be diffi cult to get a clear overview of the various options.
Once you have found somewhere to live in Denmark, you should be aware that your lease must comply with the Danish Rent Act for it to be valid and that you will often need to pay three months’ rent in advance in addition to a deposit corresponding to three months’ rent. If you encounter problems with your landlord or other problems in relation to your ac-commodation, you can join a tenants’ organisation which can help you.
HOUSING BENEFIT
If you live in rented accommodation in Denmark and you have a low income, you may be eligible for a contribution towards your rent; however, this is not an option for inter-national students or exchange students. This is because as an international student in Denmark you need to be self-supporting in order to obtain a residence permit, and if you apply for housing benefi t then you are no longer self-supporting, and this may have im-plications for your residence permit. For further information, please contact the Danish Immigration Offi ce, Student Offi ce: T: +45 35 30 87 50
STUDENTERHUS
Studenterhus Aarhus is a place where Aarhus students can meet, hear music and participate in academic events. Studen-terhus Aarhus organises several different events in the course of the year including concerts, courses etc.
You can read more about Studenterhus Aarhus at www.studenterhusaarhus.dk (see English pages).
INSURANCE
When staying and living in Denmark, it is a good idea to take out personal liability insur-ance which covers you in the event that you damage another person’s property and have to pay compensation. Likewise, we would also recommend that you take out household contents insurance which covers your personal property such as books, computer, furniture etc. In addition, it is a good idea to take out accident insurance which provides compensation in the event that you become disabled or are seriously injured. If you are going to take out insurance in Denmark, we recommend that you do so as soon as possible after your arrival. It is also a good idea to draw on other people’s experience to learn which insurance companies provide the best coverage.

HEALTH INSURANCE
If you are studying in Denmark for less than three months, it is advisable to take out private health insurance as you will not be covered by Danish national health insurance during your stay. If you are studying for more than three months in Denmark, and you have been issued with a yellow health insurance card as well as a social security number (CPR no.), then you are covered by Danish health insurance, which means you are entitled to medical assistance and hospital treatment.
JOBS If you are an international student in Denmark, you can work 37 hours a week providing you are an EU or Nordic citizen. All other nationals can work for up to 15 hours a week.
The easiest way to fi nd a job is to contact various companies/employers to hear whether they have any vacancies. Otherwise you can always use the wide range of online job sites.
You must remember that in accepting paid employment you need to pay tax and to be registered and issued with a tax card. To do so, contact SKAT. If you have not obtained a tax card, 60 per cent of your pay will be deducted in tax instead of paying the tax rate you would otherwise have to pay.

Democracy anD Society
State, region anD municipality
In Denmark, public sector tasks are divided between the State, the regions and the municipalities.
The State is responsible for the overall running of the country. Among other things, the State is responsible for taxation, youth and higher education and foreign policy.Denmark has five regions, their primary task being the running of the public health care service.
The 98 municipalities are the citizens’ entry to the public sector services. The municipal-ities are responsible for a wide range of tasks close to the daily lives of citizens, among other things employment, citizens’ services, childcare and primary and lower secondary education.
Democracy anD freeDom of Speech
Denmark is a democratic society characterised by freedom, obligations and rights for everyone irrespective of gender, skin colour, cultural background, religion and sexual orientation. Everyone is free to think, speak and write, form societies or practise their religion. Personal liberty and equality are fundamental to Danish society, and liberty is limited only by the duty to respect other people’s rights to freedom and equality.
electionS
Denmark is a representative democracy. On election day, voters elect the representa-tives they want to look after their interests in the Danish parliament, Folketinget, regional councils and town and city councils.
Parliamentary elections are held at least every four years, but the prime minister can call an election earlier if he or she so wishes. This is how general elections are usually called. Municipal and regional elections also take place every four years, but this always hap-pens on a fixed date, the third Tuesday in November. It is not possible to call regional or municipal elections in the middle of an election period.
All Danish citizens aged 18 and over who live in Denmark are entitled to vote in a general election. Everyone who has lived in Denmark for three years and is over 18 years of age can vote in the municipal and regional council elections.

The bus departure times are coordinated with fl ight departure times at Aarhus Airport and are planned two to three weeks in advance. The journey to the airport takes about 50 minutes.
In addition to the airport bus, regional buses also drive to Aarhus Airport, and there is also a connection to Billund Airport. Read more about airport buses at www.midttrafi k.dk.
RAIL
From Aarhus’s main railway station, there are trains to Copenhagen several times an hour, including non-stop services. It is also possible to travel to other towns and cities in Denmark with direct connections, for example Aalborg, Fredericia and Herning.
Use Grenaabanen and Midtjyske Jernbaner to travel to Grenaa and Odder. The trains stop at several places in Aarhus, supplementing the buses.
If you are travelling abroad, there are two daily departures to Berlin and Hamburg. You can plan your rail journey at www.rejseplanen.dk.

BICYCLE
East Jutland boasts many good bicycle routes with excellent possibilities for mak-ing excursions into the countryside and woods.
The easiest way to get around Aarhus is by bike, so you avoid the traffi c, and you can use the network of bicycle paths that connect the city. These include Bra-brandstien or Risskovstien, which runs along the coast to the northern outskirts of the city.
If you only need a bicycle for a short period of time, you can pick up a city bike. City bikes can be used free of charge, although you need a DKK 20 coin to unlock the bike. When you return the bike at one of the 56 city bike stands around Aarhus, you get your coin back. Read more about the city bikes in Aarhus at www.aarhusbycykel.dk.
DRIVING AND PARKING IN AARHUS When driving into Aarhus, there are several multi-storey car parks and numerous parking spaces. In central Aarhus, you either have to pay to use the public parking facilities or observe the parking restrictions. If you live in central Aarhus, you can buy a residents parking permit, which offers a number of advantages in relation to these restrictions. If you have to park your car in a multi-storey car park or private parking space, follow the directions on the signs.
FERRIES
From East Jutland, ferries sail to Zealand, Sweden, Samsø, Tunø and Anholt. There are several sailings each day from the Port of Aarhus to Kalundborg or Odden on Zealand.
