The Background??A REVIEW

What was the situation in Korea after the Second World War?

America’s policy was to contain Communism (to stop it spreading). In 1949 China became Communist and it seemed like containment had failed in Asia.Korea (China’s neighbour) used to be ruled by Japan, but at the end of World War II, it was divided between the USA and the USSR along the 38th parallel until a government could be elected to run the whole country. In August 1948, the Americans set up the Republic of Korea in the south, with Syngman Rhee as the first president. A month later, the Russians set up the Korean People’s Democratic Republic in the north, ruled by Kim II Sung, a Red Army captain. Each man claimed to represent the whole country. Russian and US troops out moved out.

Who was to blame for the outbreak of the Korean war?

● Although ideological confrontation between authoritarian communism and liberal capitalism often appeared at the heart of the outbreak of the Korean war, it invariably was filtered through nationalist perspectives, domestic pressures and individual personalities.

● What you think this view means?

Part Two

This activity is an example of a piece of work we would do when studying Part A of the course on Edward VI and Mary I. This part of the course is based on sources whereas Part B of the course is based on own knowledge.

Page 14: Welcome Mrs Kirk Mrs Wilson to A Level History€¦ · The first leader of North Korea was Kim Il Sung 2. The leader of North Korea today is Kim Il Sung 3. The Korean War was a war

Who are the sources about?Mary I

- Daughter of Henry VIII and named as the successor to Edward IV , in the Act of Succession by Henry VIII if he had no heirs. Mary was the only one of Henry VIII’s children who was raised a Catholic.

Page 15: Welcome Mrs Kirk Mrs Wilson to A Level History€¦ · The first leader of North Korea was Kim Il Sung 2. The leader of North Korea today is Kim Il Sung 3. The Korean War was a war

Who are the sources about?

Lady Jane GreyShe was the granddaughter of Henry VIII’s sister Mary so was a distant line to the throne. She was a Protestant. She became queen of England for 9 days!!!!

Page 16: Welcome Mrs Kirk Mrs Wilson to A Level History€¦ · The first leader of North Korea was Kim Il Sung 2. The leader of North Korea today is Kim Il Sung 3. The Korean War was a war

Reasons why people supported Mary and NOT Lady Jane Grey

1. Religion - Mary was a Catholic, which most people in England were even after Henry and Edward VI’s religious changes.

2. Mary - was the rightful Tudor heir. Henry VIII had stated she would be queen after Edward VI as she was his eldest daughter. This was stated in the Act of Succession 1544.

3. Hatred of the Duke of Northumberland. He was in charge of the Privy Council and had been in charge of Edward VI because he came to the throne at 9 and died when he was 16. He did not want Mary to be queen for several reasons - he wanted to remain in power, so he organised for his son, Guildford Dudley, to marry Lady Jane Grey and therefore could continue to influence the Queen. Northumberland was also a Protestant and wanted England to remain Protestant. So he wrote an agreement which became part of Edward VI’s will stating that Lady Jane Grey would succeed Edward VI and become Queen, NOT Mary. Some people hated him for doing this as they thought it went against what Henry VIII had set out in his will and that he was

power hungry.

In this task you need to argue which of the three reasons below was the main reason why Mary became the next Queen of England after Henry VIII.

Follow the instructions below

1. Highlight the sources in either green, red or yellow (or choose your own colours but make sure you use them on the key above) to show what reason the source gives for why Mary became the next Queen of England.

2. Then fill in the planning table.3. Then write a paragraph using EITHER source to argue why

did Mary become the next Queen of England.
