Normally I would end a lot of my articles with a quote, but for this one I would like to start my comments with a quote,

“Without community service, we would not have a strong quality of life. It’s important to the person who serves as well as the recipient. It’s the way in which we ourselves grow and develop.” - Dorothy Height

I share this quote because I want to take a minute and thank all of you who serve on community organization’s boards of directors. If you sit on one of those boards you believe in the work that is being done and enjoy being a part of that organization. I can share that I have been blessed to work in three of those non-profits and have had and am still having the opportunity to work with some amazing board members. You all work very hard on these boards to make sure that each agency’s mission and vision is being supported and perpetuated. You do this not for the pay, but for the love of the work and in turn that motivates those of us who are the staff members of those organizations. That brings me to another group of people I would like to address. To the Canton City Council, Mayor McDowell and all City of Canton administration and employees I want to thank you for all that you do! Since the Partnership’s existence it has been vital that a strong connection remain between our non-profit organization and the public entities that we serve. We have the privilege of getting to work with all of you and see the hard work you put into what you do. We also know that sometimes you are faced with difficult decisions, sometimes you get to celebrate successes and sometimes you wonder why you even got involved in the first place. When the latter happens, remind yourself why you signed up in the first place, remember people are counting on you to listen and to be their voice, and most importantly, though you probably don’t hear it very often, YOU ARE APPRECIATED AND WE THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU DO!!

In closing, it is imperative that we encourage and educate the next generation about the importance of serving. And whether that service is organizational or public it is needed and valued. We want you to get involved!!

With Many Thanks,Missy Towery, PCEDExecutive Director

Canton Union School District #66Friends, Parent(s), and Guardians:

This is a busy time of year for all members of our learning community as we prepare for the next school year. Since October, our learning community has been working to establish district goals and timelines for new program deployment at the commencement of the 18-19 school year. One program that will make next year another great year is Running Start. Running start is a program that originated in the State of Washington. In a nutshell, it allows high school seniors to attend community college full-time and receive high school credit. The program is beneficial since it allows students to save money on college costs while getting an early start on college. Some of the benefits that Running Start offers are:

• Families reduce college costs by allowing students to live at home and pay community college tuition costs rather than costs associated with a 4 year university.

• Creates taxpayers sooner by accelerating the education process for high school students.

• Provides more disposable income for families through the savings of college costs.

• Depending on the amount of college credits earned the program could eliminate the need for a student to rely on the ACT or SAT for college admittance. In essence, after 24 hours a student becomes a transfer student. Thus their admittance is based on their grades and curriculum studied.

• Can create a more challenging curriculum for students.

• Allows vo-tec students a quicker path into the job market.

At the end of the day we are excited about this program and its benefits to our students. The district hopes to start taking student applications to the Running Start Program this spring. For further information please watch the district Facebook page and website.

COMMITTEE OVERVIEWBusiness and Community Development

Chairman: Jodi Wilcoxen, MidAmerica National Bank

Business & Community Development is currently researching options for E-commerce for our Chamber members to help retain business and our shop local initiatives. E-commerce is a transaction of buying or selling

online. Online shopping web sites for retail sales direct to consumers is in high demand and becoming more necessary for local retailers to offer. Quality Professional Development workshops

are also being offered for 2018.

Government AffairsChairman: Nick Tinsman,

Barnhart, Tinsman, & Lane, Ltd.

Meet the Candidates Night for the upcoming general elections will be held Thursday, March 8th at the Canton Park District - Donaldson Center at Wallace Park. The event will begin at 6:30pm. Candidates running

have been asked to speak, and the public is invited to attend to meet with each candidate, hear their platforms, and ideas.

Member & Public Relations is working to restructure the current committee to add more value to our members. Suggestions are welcome to better serve our membership. The Committee will look at adding

new programs and tasks that focus on our members and retention. All Chamber members are welcome to join any of the committees to become involved and give input.

Members & Promotions Chairman: Ben Brewer, Unity Pointe Health

They can just go online search for the product you want, find the lowest price and instantly to the product and will be delivered to your door. Another advantage is that consumers can visit the websites of the products that interest them and can ask for the product 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Most websites that offer products or services for sale need to be regularly updated to keep track of current prices, stock quantities and new product lines, so ease of use is incredibly important for the site owner. There are many platforms you can consider when taking your products and services online such as existing marketplaces Facebook, eBay or Etsy. However, you may want to consider a more tailored and custom website that’s unique to your business. This option is more beneficial, especially when creating a customer-centric website. This allows you to specifically meet your buyer persona’s needs and eliminate any pain points they may be facing along the way.

Two options are WooCommerce, which can be installed on a web hosting provider of your choice, or Neto, a hosted platform and an all-in-one solution.
