SymposiumGoalsEnvironmentalJusticeEnvironmentaljusticeisacentralcomponentofsustainabilitypoliticsduringtheAnthropocene–thecurrentgeologicalagewhenhumanactivityisthedominantinfluenceonclimateandenvironment.Everyaspectofsustainabilitypoliticsrequiresacloseanalysisofitsequityimplications.EnvironmentaljusticeprovidesuswiththetoolstocriticallyinvestigatethemanifestationsandimpactsoftheAnthropoceneaswellasthedebatesoveritsoriginsandcauses.FromitsoriginsasaUS-basedmovementexaminingevidenceofenvironmentalracismrelatedtositingoftoxicwastesites–ashighlightedbytheUSGAOStudy,theUCCstudy,andDr.RobertBullard’swork-environmentaljusticehasexpandedglobally,asamovementandfieldofresearch.TheEnvironmentalJusticeAtlasandsimilarinternationalinitiativesareclearindicatorsofthis.Today,globalEJactivismandresearchhavemovedbeyonddemandingequityinthedistributionofenvironmentalharmsandbenefitstoacallforproceduralequity,tohelpinitiatethestructuraltransformationoftheeconomyandhumanity’srelationshipswithnatureasameanstoaddresssocial,political,economic,andenvironmentalcrises.Environmental Justice and Sustainability in the Anthropocene, the group organizing thissymposium, is a global challenges research team sponsored by the School of GlobalEnvironmentalSustainability.Like itssponsor,ourGCRTismultidisciplinaryandmultiscalarandcommittedtorigorousresearchandpublicengagement.Thissymposiumaimstobringtogetheracademics(facultyandgraduatestudents),independentresearchers,communityandmovementactivists,andregulatoryandpolicypractitionersfromarichvarietyofdisciplines,researchareas,perspectives,andnations.OuroverarchinggoalistobuildonseveraldecadesofEJresearchandpracticetoaddresstheseeminglyintractableenvironmentalandecologicalproblemsoftheAnthropocene.HowdoweachieveEJamongsthumansandbetweennatureandhumans,withinandacrossgenerations,inanagewhenhumansdominatethelandscape?Howcanwebetterunderstandcollectivehumandominancewithoutobscuringcontinuingpowerdifferentialsandinequitieswithinandbetweenhumansocieties?Whatinstitutionalandgovernanceinnovationscanweadopttoaddressexistingchallengesandtopromotejusttransitionsandfutures?Howdoweprioritizethesegoalswhenclimatechangedenial,corporatewealthandpower,andchallengestodemocracythreatentheseefforts?
