Welcome to the Heart of Invention Let me add my personal words of welcome to each of you joining us on the Campus. You’re now part of an international community with over 85 nationalities. It’s a unique, vibrant ecosystem of more than 10,000 researchers, developers and entrepreneurs. I can imagine it probably may feel daunting at first. But remember that everyone here has been through this pioneering phase. The magic of this Campus is that there is an active spirit of collaboration, trust and open innovation. We’ll help you out. As Henk van Houten, one of our community members, stated in his blog: “The best way to predict the future it to create it.” That quote resembles our aim precisely. Of course it all starts by offering world-class facilities for both business and leisure. As Campus Site Management we do our best to put everything in place. You will find ICT-power here, a variety of labs and research equipment and – if necessary – a large number of specialists to help you out on testing, analysing and engineering questions. Concerning leisure, we are quite confident you will appreciate our restaurants, shops, coffee corners, Wellness Center and Conference Center at our central hub of social interaction: The Strip. However, in spite of all the excellent ‘hardware’ it’s the unique network of brilliant people that makes this Campus really inspiring and productive. There are over 135 leading companies located within a 10 minute walk from your office. Companies and professionals who think alike, making this a place where paths cross, ideas meet actions, and innovation accelerates. Here, the unconscious search reveals a conscious discovery, with an open mind to the world around and the road ahead. So where to start here on Campus? This Welcome Paper has been compiled to give you an overview of what’s happening now, how you can access what’s on offer and get the maximum benefit from your new surroundings. Furthermore we welcome you warmly to our many conferences and events. An active role in enhancing the conversations here is encouraged and received with enthusiasm. We are curious to hear your stories! Another platform you might find useful is our virtual community: mytechcampus.nl. Get yourself a login and off you go. We’re delighted to have you join us! Frans Schmetz Managing Director High Tech Campus Eindhoven History WELCOME PAPER Turning technology into business The green park-like layout of the terrain makes High Tech Campus Eindhoven a great place to work. It also reflects the Campus’ focus on sustainable and environmentally friendly entrepreneurship. High Tech Campus Eindhoven invested approximately €50 million Euro in a series of measures, primarily aimed at improving energy efficiency. Buildings are the biggest energy consumers on the Campus. Approximately 80% of all energy is used for heating and cooling. Every new building is extremely energy efficient. A large amount of glazing (highest insulation class HR++) provides a relatively high daylight level which, in combination with a special control system, ensures substantial savings on energy for lighting. In winter a special heat generator system reclaims heat by means of heat extraction from the exhaust air. Several car parks have been fitted with solar panels to power the lighting system inside. The Campus cold-and-heat storage system (CHO) is an example of true innovation. Can you store cold? Two reservoirs have been created in the well-insulating sandy layers of the ground. A reservoir to store cold water, the other to store warm. In summer, cold water is pumped up for cooling. This heats up the water, after which it is stored in the warm water reservoir, ready for heating buildings in wintertime. The CHO is good for savings of more than 60% on energy costs resulting in a 30% overall reduction of energy consumption on the Campus site. The green park-like layout of the terrain makes High Tech Campus Eindhoven a great place to work.

Every new

building is extremely energy efficient.

Genneper Parken, the green neighbour of High Tech Campus Eindhoven, is a large nature area. The typical Brabant landscape of Genneper Parken offers unlimited possibilities for recreation. By just enjoying the beautiful environment with family and friends or by using the numerous sports facilities such as subtropical swimming centre de Tongelreep or ice-skating centre Eindhoven.

Positioned in the heart of the park is historical farm the Genneper Hoeve. The farm is fun to visit with kids and it has a little shop in which the typically Dutch foods (cheese, meat, vegetables) it produces are sold. The Campus

The place to meetEverybody arriving at High Tech Campus Eindhoven soon hears two

words: The Strip. This remarkable building – nicely situated alongside

the central lake – forms the beating heart of the Campus community.

Wondering where to find that business contact? This one person that

can offer a solution to your problem? An inspiring lecture? Or just a

conversation during lunch? It is right here! The Strip is the place to meet,

eat, exercise and relax. A quick-guide to the 400 metres long building.

Genneper Parken: our friendly green neighbour

has a special relation with Genneper Hoeve, a number of its cows graze on our site and the excellent cheese can also be found at the menu of our restaurants. Furthermore Genneper Parken has several educational activities.

Historical Open air Museum Eindhoven (HOME) offers a glimpse in prehistoric and medieval times. The Environmental Education Center (MEC) reveals the secrets of nature. For its value to educate on environmental issues, the MEC is sponsored by High Tech Campus Eindhoven. Enjoy Genneper Parken!

EventsThe most effective way to build your network and meet new people is to visit one of our many events. The Campus is host to numerous events on technical, scientific and business issues. For example: the Campus Technology Seminars, Campus Industry Connection and Open Coffee. There are also events to sharpen your skills such as Toastmasters and NLP Café. Most of the events are held at our Conference Center. However The Colour Kitchen has also been host to a number of extraordinary events such as radio shows, concerts, robot band performances, start-up weekends, pub quiz and more. Inspiration has many angles.

FoodThe first time you might be surprised, but every noon you will see the Campus population stepping out of their offices and strolling towards The Strip. Not a flam to say: the food is good at the Campus. The Strip comprises eight different restaurant formulas to fulfil your lunch (and even your breakfast or dinner) appetite. Restaurant The Mart is a self service restaurant featuring cooking on the spot. All fresh ingredients and lots of choice. Above The Mart you can find The Lounge, the most exclusive formula: lunching and dining a la carte and if desired your food is served in your private business room. At the other end is the Newcourt with Al Fresco an Italian restaurant, Love My Curry an Indian restaurant, Subway with the well-known submarine sandwiches and Daely, a supermarket-style restaurant and right in the middle you will find The Colour Kitchen, a professional hospitality concept with a great social heart. More into taking a lunch stroll? You will find the AH-to-go a useful place.

RelaxHard work has to be interchanged with relaxation. During the summer you will see people sitting in front of The Strip and alongside the pond, catching some sun. And sometimes you can hear the beats pumping as the spinning trainer decides to put his training bikes outside. We have got a fully equipped Wellness Center at The Strip in which you will find state-of-the-art training tools, motivating group lessons and professional coaches. A great opportunity to challenge your colleagues and to meet a lot of like minded new people.

The Strip is the beating heart of our community. We hope you will enjoy it.

Cutting and Curling at the Campus!

FEATURED CAMPUS COMPANY

“When walking across the Campus, you feel the vibe of the international

high tech community. The energetic atmosphere, as well as the ambition

to excel on a global level, match perfectly with the corporate culture at

Holst Centre.” Bert Gyselinckx, managing director

Holst Centre is an independent centre for Open Innovation that develops generic technologies for wireless autonomous microsystems and for flexible electronics. A key feature is interaction and cooperation with various industrial and academic partners. It is this kind of crosspollination that enables Holst Centre to tune its scientific strategy to industrial needs. Holst Centre was set up in 2005 by imec (Belgian research centre for nano technology and nano electronics) and TNO (the largest Dutch research and technology institute). Working together with over 50 leading industrial and academic partners, Holst Centre bridges the gap between fundamental research and industrial product development. It thereby plays an important role in the Open

Innovation ecosystem and at High Tech Campus Eindhoven.

Easy to stay in touchHolst Centre started in a few rooms in a shared building at the Campus. Now it has its own building with a staff of over 180 people. “Being at the Campus together with some of our research partners definitely facilitates the interaction. With a good mix of big names and ambitious small and medium sized companies”, says Bert Gyselinckx. A good example of the Open Innovation working method of Holst Centre is the wireless EEG headset. In co-development with Panasonic the team redesigned the integration of various technologies such as advanced noise

Holst Centre: bridging the gap between fundamental and industrial

reduction, ultra low-power consumption and dry electrodes, resulting in a prototype that is both accurately detecting and processing the signals and comfortable to wear and use. Meanwhile the EEG headset is also subject to research the monitoring of emotions.

Another example of the research of Holst Centre is the Spatial Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) programm. ALD uses sequential chemical reactions to create thin, conformal films over large areas and with atomic-level control. Industrial use of ALD has so far been limited to high-end semiconductors due to the technique’s relative slowness. Spatial ALD overcomes this drawback by separating the reactions in space rather than time. The result is a technique with all the strengths of ALD plus the added benefit of high throughput and low cost, making it ideal for a wider range of applications such as flexible electronics.

“It’s important to know that we don’t make products ourselves”, Gyselinckx explains. ”Together with our partners, we develop the enabling technologies and cover the stages before actual product development. The targets are set and steered in dialogue with all the partners in a program. As small as possible, as low power as possible and produced at the lowest possible cost are examples of our

common drivers. With the knowledge that is generated, our partners can develop their products that will hit the market three to ten years from now.”

Quick and easy access to knowledge, facilities and expertise”Due to the increasing complexity of products and systems, R&D costs are growing faster than company revenues. The goal of open innovation is to share ideas, efforts, costs and risks, and to reduce time to market for new product generations”, Gyselinckx explains. ”At the Campus, we benefit from the quick and easy access to the knowledge and equipment of Philips Innovation Services. As a young research organisation, it has been proven key to make use of the on-site cleanrooms and associated expertise and skills. This flexible way of working and the open innovation business model, allows us to focus and maximise the return of our own investments. It is our pleasure to see that in almost ten years time, Holst Centre and High Tech Campus Eindhoven have grown into two organisations that reinforce each other.”
