Today’s Discussion Topic:
Relationships in Harry Potter
General Terms
• shipper n. Short for Relationshipper. This is someone who supports a romantic particular pairing.
• ship n. Short for relationship. Often referred to in more abstract terms for all particulars of a pairing and its fans.
• Ships are often designated thus:– Ron/Hermione, or abbreviated H/R– Ships can also be designated by cutesy elided
names, such as “Harmony” for Harry/Hermione. These names, in this author’s personal opinion, are a blight upon all that is good in this world.
• Shipping wars tend to be rather common among Harry Potter fans.
Specific Ships
Ron/Hermione
• Perhaps the most visible of all potential romantic relationships in Harry Potter.
• Characterized primarily by bickering, in that we-argue-all-the-time-because-we-secretly-want-to-make-out way.
• While they haven’t gotten together in the books yet, JKR has all but come out and confirmed that this will be happening.
Ron: Hermione, why is your hand on my arse?
Harry/Hermione• Also a very popular ship.
Again, referred to as “Harmony” (again, *gag*).
• Supported more by the movies than the books themselves, and by the idea that Ron/Hermione in fact argue all the time in a we-actually-don’t-get-along-at-all-and-especially-don’t-want-to-make-out way.
• Recently, Harmony fans got a little cranky over an interview with JKR and Emerson, who runs Mugglenet, when he referred to them as “delusional”.
Canon Ships
• Harry/Ginny- She’s loved him from afar since Book 2! He randomly started liking her in Book 6! They made out! They broke up! Woe!
• Lily/James- aww, Harry’s parents backstory. Cute, until they die.
• And from the WTF? corner of canon…– Remus/Tonks. Frankly, I don’t get it.
Other Non Canon Het Ships
• Draco/Ginny and Draco/Hermione. Draco has the bad boy who has the potential to be redeemed thing going on. Also, very much with the bickering:
Draco: Mudblood!Hermione: Ferret!Draco: I hate you!Hermione: Me too.Draco: Let’s make out.Hermione: …’Kay.
• Many other pairings abound, ranging from things like Harry/Luna to Snape/Hermione.
The Slashier Side of the Fandom
• Slash n. fiction revolving around or including a relationship between characters of the same sex
• The Slash and Het (for Heterosexual) sides of Harry Potter fandom generally tend to peacefully coexist/ignore each other.
Harry/Draco
• The most popular slash pairing hands down in this fandom.
• Also characterized by the Gryffindor/Slytherin, bickering, we-hate-other dynamic that you can see in Draco/Ginny or Draco/Hermione.
• Often angsty and emo.• Check out our cafepress store.
Remus/SiriusOr, “embraced him like a brother” my arse
• Takes place in the Maraders era, and/or during the later books.
• Obviously, this ship took a bit of a beating from Book 5. Also paved the way for many, many angsty death fics.
Other Slash Ships
• Range from Harry/Ron to Harry/Snape (or “Snarry” *gag*) to such rarer WTF? pairings like Snape/Lockhart.
The End!
