P r o g r a m N o t e s ith a father who trained as a fighterpilot in World War II and a motherwho survived a near fatal bout with

depression in the 1950’s, RichardOberacker’s outline of ACE had obviousresonance when he first shared it with me.That, coupled with nine weeks we spentplaying a show in St. Louis in 2003,brought the story to life for the two of us.St. Louis is filled with arches and gateways– some open, some closed – but all imply-ing boundaries between worlds. It was aperfect setting for a show that exists inmultiple realities simultaneously.

ACE begins with a desperate call for help. Itis amazing the doors and hearts that openwhen we ask for help. In the fall of 2002,most of my life and work as a freelance classical musician in New York vanishedpost 9/11. Seeing few other options, I askeda friend for help; subsequently I accepted anoffer as concertmaster with the first nation-al tour of Disney’s The Lion King. My firstday on the job, I met the then-AssistantConductor, Richard Oberacker, who told meof his dream that formed the outline for thestory of ACE. Suddenly a door was openedfor me on a new life and world of endeavoras a writer.

WWFlying Tigers was the nickname of the American Volunteer Group (AVG), a civil-ian fighter unit commanded by Colonel Claire Lee Chennault formed monthsbefore Pearl Harbor and that fought for China against Japanese forces in SoutheastAsia. The AVG's first fight against the Japanese was December 20, 1941 (approxi-mately three weeks after Pearl Harbor).

Officially they were employees of a private military contractor, the Central AircraftManufacturing Company, which employed them for "training and instruction." In fact, pilots were recruited with tacit White House support from the ranks of theAmerican armed services or reserve officers. Contrary to legend, none wererecruited from the ranks of civilian transport pilots or barnstormers. Those pilots

who volunteered were dis-charged from the Americanarmed services and sent tofly and fight as mercenar-ies for the Republic ofChina Air Force.

Pilots were taught to takeon enemy aircraft in teamsrather than alone, as theiraircraft were not as maneu-verable or as numerous as

the Japanese fighters. Their P-40 planes’ advantages included pilot armor, self-sealing fuel tanks, sturdy construction, heavy armament (two 50- and four 30-caliber machine guns), and a faster diving speed than most Japanese planes. Thepilots used these assets to advantage, gaining high altitude and then diving topounce upon the enemy. Despite their fame, the Flying Tigers’ strength averagedonly 62 combat-ready pilots and fighter planes. Spare parts were almost impossi-ble to obtain, though the AVG did receive 50 replacement P-40E aircraft towardthe end of its combat tour.

AVG fighter planes were painted with a large shark-face on the front of the plane.Tiger pilots had seen photographs of the similarly painted RAF 112 Squadron inNorth Africa, which in turn had adopted the shark motif from German pilots inCrete. The Flying Tigers had great success against the forces of Japan during the lowestperiod of the war for American forces, and gave Americans hope they would eventually succeed against the Japanese. After the dissolution of the AVG in mid-1942, the name was applied to its successor military unit, the 23rd FighterGroup, and more broadly to the China Air Task Force and the U.S. 14th Air Force.

obert and I wanted to write some-thing that returned to the traditionsof the great American musicals of

the so-called “Golden Age of Broadway”:shows that had sweep and scope, tolduniquely American stories, and spoke to amulti-generational audience. These wereshows that were “about” many things, fabrics of many textures and threads.

ACE seeks to use modern musical theatrestructure and technique while spinning atale that harkens back to an era that has insome ways been lost – not just in terms ofa period or historical event, but in a feelingand a way of expressing emotion. It alsohas to reverberate in the minds and heartsof a contemporary audience. It has to be“about” something universal.

ACE was born from my fascination withparenting – one of the most basic humanexperiences. Even those who have not hadchildren of their own experience it becausewe experience parenting from the secondwe are born. It is a fragile and perilous phe-nomenon. Things can go wrong. Dreamscan be shattered. Mistakes can be made. But always, always, there is the opportunityfor great things to come.

— Richard Oberacker,Composer, Co-lyricist, Co-librettist

RR

The shark faced fighters were among the most recognizable of any individualcombat unit of WWII, and word of their triumphs was celebrated at a time whenthe news in the USA were filled with stories of victory after victory accomplishedby Japanese forces at the start of WWII.

The AVG was officially credited with 297 enemy aircraft destroyed, including 229in the air, but others calculated that the AVG actually destroyed about 115 enemyaircraft in the air and on the ground. Thirteen pilots were killed in action, captured, or disappeared on combat missions; two were killed in ground accidents, and eight were killed in flying accidents.

Just before their 50th reunion in 1992, the AVG veterans were retroactively recognized as members of the U.S. military services during the seven months the group was in combat against the Japanese. Survivors were made eligible forveterans' benefits on the basis of that service, and were awarded medals for their participation.

ACE is about transformation. At thecore of this musical is a message of for-giveness and the pursuit of makingyour dreams a reality. The story is ofhistory and families – fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, and sons – and howthese families are torn apart andstitched back together by the events oftwo World Wars, events which definedthe nature of their lives.

Bridge to Broadway is a special program to help raise funds that launch Globe productionsdestined to play on the Great White Way. To date 19 Globe plays and musicals have gone toBroadway, four of which played in New York this year.

The Old Globe is grateful to the donors listed above, and as participants in the Bridge toBroadway program they had the opportunity to enjoy a private dinner in one of New York’sfinest restaurants, attend the opening-night performance of The Times They Are A-Changin’ orDr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas!, and the opening-night cast party.

the time and talents of our team members. At most of theorganizations that receive Foundation grants, you’ll findemployees of the Foundation volunteering their personal time as well. We’ve found that volunteerism really helps to develop our team members, and we’re proud of our philanthropic work, not just in San Diego but throughout ourwhole footprint.”

The Foundation places special focus on educational programming. “While we support job training programs, affordable housing programs and literacy programs, we arealways trying to support programs that help underservedyouth to be exposed to the performing arts. Programs thatbring the performing arts to children help to serve our mainobjective of building stronger communities.”

The Wells Fargo Foundation’s continued support of TheOld Globe is an example of charitable giving at its best. Notonly does the Foundation make regular donations to theGlobe’s Annual Fund and educational programming, but DeanThorp has served on the Globe’s Board of Directors for fiveyears. Friends like Dean Thorp and the Wells FargoFoundation help to ensure that the Globe will continue toserve the San Diego Community for years to come.
